NJ.com: Cam Spencer has entered the transfer portal

We have to assume at least an opportunity to counter was provided by Cam's people but if what he is getting from another school is way "above market" then you may not be willing to overbid to retain him.
He’s definitely getting above market money to be a sixth or seventh man.

You may be right that is where things appear headed, but that is not appealing or possible to many, and may end up killing the goose that laid the golden eggs.
Yup. If Colleges have to morph to be more like the pros, than the rules of pro are established. The fans only contribute through indirect means of ticket, concension, parking and merchandise sales. 90% of the colleges will be done with college athletics at this level pretty quickly.

This has always been the case. Players transfer up to better programs and more exposure.
Spencer left Loyola last year for a better opportunity.
Fernandes is transferring for a better opportunity.
The only reason players transfer "down" is to get more playing time.

When has anyone transferred to a worse situation for themselves and "I just wanted to go out of my way to make Cincinnati Football better. I really felt they should have a chance at winning."

What are "the right reasons"?

It’s no longer about opportunity. It’s now about $$$$

I wouldn’t tend to agree but a verbal commitment doesn’t mean a thing anymore nor does a return year at any program
Of course not, but the forecast has never been higher. Would be a terrible time to give up on the program.

Ok not ideal. Disappointing but the reality. What are our options now as we have an even bigger need for shooting?

Tbh, its hard to blame the kids. It shouldve never gotten to this. If someone offers a 22 year old $250K (random number, no inside info) to dribble a basketball for 4 months, its hard to turn down.

TBH, if youre a good player why arent you entering the portal every off season, fielding offer$ and then going back to your program and say, “match or im out”. They match, you stay, they wont, you go.
The destruction of collegiate athletics ( as we all know it) is amongst us.
Theres no ink on any paper.

Bullsh*t. Big loss. IMO was our MVP last year. All around good ballplayer.

You're too emotional.....the staff made a call on Spencer, he's not more valuable than the players here. If he asked for NIL and got a better offer, then the evidence says otherwise.

We have 4 guards and Mulcahy on the fence to come back or not. If it was Mulcahy or Spencer, my guess is Mulcahy won out on where the staff decided to go.

Mulcahy can play multiple positions

Spencer cannot.....

Griffiths can replace Spencer and play multiple positions, Spencer cannot.

Simpson can play multiple positions, Spencer cannot.....

Davis is a combo guard and Fernandes can shoot off the ball.

I am or would have been more concerned that we would have redshirted Davis, when he's talented enough to play right away.

Mulcahy is either back or not.

Nothing has changed, we need a 4/5 1st and foremost.

Has nothing to do with better opportunity other than cash after I graduate because I’m not going to the NBA. Cam Spencer played one year at Rutgers and you missed the tournament. You seen what happened when he got double teamed or was the focus of the defense?

"cash after I graduate because I'm not going to the NBA" is the definition of "better opportunity".

But even a pure better basketball opportunity wouldn't matter.
If Cam transferred to Kansas for no extra NIL - people would still complain. "Feeder system for the blue bloods. Teams can just cherry pick the best players from lower programs."
Note - this is exactly how we got Cam in the first place but disregard that.

Sounds like UMass fans towards Fernandes.
We should probably revoke his scholarship since so many are upset about grad transfers.

It's too funny watching the same posters denigrate the coach for not using the portal enough then cheer on a player that transfers to RU then state that they are essentially done with college sports and going to take their ball home after a transfer out. lulz.

From a basketball standpoint it's a downgrade BUT all March long the refrain was that the Big Ten needed to get more dynamic and less stodgy. Well, Simpson and Davis and Fernandes are much more dynamic than Spencer.

Exactly, not binding at this point.
Even a LOI won't be binding. He can ask out and Rutgers will grant it. If Rutgers doesn't grant it, they will be destroyed in the media and Bailey will just go play with the G League or something.

As of today, RU is down a starter and gained a starter (Gavin Griffiths on paper, is Spencer's replacement). We need another depth piece that can play multiple positions, not just 1.

Ideally, you take a multiple year transfer but we got 1 solid year from Spencer. Wish him luck (maybe not against RU, if he goes to Georgetown and he comes to the RAC in a few months). I don't think anything other than a warm round of applause would be in place, if that's the scenario. No hard feelings, just about basketball.

Not emotional at all, simply factual. How do you know that the staff made a call on Spencer. Nice try.

Spencer is rutgers graduate and rutgers man . He came here and got a degree . He’s a scarlet knight forever. Now he will get a graduate degree at another school and maybe better school.
I thought many of the dopes here cared about academics!
many of the smart ones don't care either.
They want wins, not degrees.

from here on out anyone who complains about on court performance the only response needs to be "how much did you give to help the team win....
blazing saddles no GIF

I rarely post much anymore on these boards and hardly ever comment on recruiting or commitment threads. I am numb to any individual joining or leaving a program as my level of emotional investment to Rutgers athletics could not be lower.

The current state of college athletics is not sustainable. There will be casualties and that is probably necessary to get some belts and suspenders around a new paradigm for college athletics.

In what rationale and well designed sport is it the responsibility of the fans to directly compensate "students" for their athletic participation at a particular institution? Where else does the fan base determine the success or failure of a particular sport or athletic program overall by how much money they give? Why do we need to pay HC's and Assistants large salaries if its all about the fans bag filling ability?

Honestly I am shocked that RU basketball has the 2024 recruiting class it has lined up. Lets see how many sign and make it here. Those who think Ace, Dylan and the other commits are locked down may be in for a let down.
