No. 11 Rutgers Men's Lacrosse Wraps Regular Season at No. 5 Penn State

I hope this team pulls it together to make a run. There needs to be a shake up on staff. As cali said earlier the o is stale. There is no innovation. On O everyone stands around and waits around for someone to make a play. Without elite talent that won’t work.

MD had elite talent and still scores a ton of back side/underneath goals through ball movement - we don’t. We feed the studs who are asked to creat on their own. When faced with a lock down d all we can do is pass around the perimeter. That doesn’t win games.

Agree with the need to change style. I personally think NASCAR started to change when Brecht brought in Sermet in 2018. That would be the first place I look.

At the end of the day, RU wasn’t able to buy…erm “recruit” enough elite talent out of the portal to maintain the same level of play.

Thankfully, recruiting is picking up, so hopefully they can start rebuilding the old fashion way which I believe is far more sustainable.

At what point are we going to admit that recruiting has been sub par and not getting better.how many offensive players do we have that are on this team that we’re recruited and have become difference makers? 2 Knobby and Scott. If we have to run an offense of all recruited players this team looks ordinary.

The portal helped us fill the gaps but who is the last recruited goalie to see substantial time at Rutgers? You’re going to have to go back a ways. Both fogos are transfers.

Unfortunately, it is going to get worse as we are going to have to replace the entire defense as well as both fogos most of the rope unit and Scott and Cameron on offense.
Are we really going to be the destination for elite Portal targets?
This is a long term issue that begins and ends with the staff

Stoller is a top recruit who would have seen substantial time in goal but for 2 senior transfers.

Yes, this has been a disappointing season for mens lacrosse. The same can be said for other Rutgers teams.I don't know if the transfer portal is the reason but the talent level clearly is lacking for many of the teams.Pikiell is showing higher level talent will be playing for Rutgers in the next two seasons.Hopefully that will happen for other Rutgers teams.

Stoller was the best goalie in the MiAA. Wimmershoff is a four star coming next year.

Scott has another year. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t take it. People don’t like hearing it but the portal is recruiting now. At least during this era.

Recruiting has certainly. picked up but if it’s going to get taken to the next level we need to get the stadium done ASAP and NIL needs to funded.

Maryland won the championship last year because of the portal. ND went from not in the tournament to number 1 this year because of the portal.

The portal has been great for us but let’s not pretend we are the only ones who use it.

rutgers has two 4 stars across the next two classes. michigan has 14. two ships passing in the night.

hopkins and psu have 13 each. osu has nine and a 5 star. maryland has 8 and four 5 stars.

transfermania ends after this offseason. there will still be transfers but not nearly to the extent that we've seen. it is not a longterm strategy. transfers closed the gap temporarily but it's already widening again and will remain the case for the foreseeable future.

not trying to be negative nancy, it's just the reality.

i dont think brecht can do much better than he is doing. it's the school. it is just not as appealing as others. just looking at big ten rivals, if you want academics/ivy-like experience you go to hopkins. if you want big sports/party school you go to psu or osu. mich has a little of both. and maryland of course is maryland. rutgers is in no man's land.

word is also getting out to recruits that the lax team is treated like second class citizens by football. cant even practice on their own home field? what recruit looks forward to getting treated like that when they can go elsewhere and be kings. do you think hopkins lax has issues practicing on homewood? they own the place.

2021-2022 was a great run but it's going to be very difficult to get back to that. if there is a recipe, i dont know what it is

We were beating all of those teams with no stars.

I’d take lacrosse recruiting with a huge grain of salt overall. It’s two guys sitting in Baltimore, one of whom never played.

We aren’t talking about the NFL coming here. Outside of a few kids, lacrosse recruit ranking is very hit and miss.

Even so, by that measure, our recruiting has been picking up by that standard.I can tell you the staff believes recruiting has gotten better.

But like I said, if we want to get players that the very top programs are getting, NIL and the stadium.

We have to get those done. That’s the recipe.

Let's not forget that a lot of the B1G teams relied on transfers this year that will also not be around next year. We're not the only team losing players. Injuries to key players this year had a huge impact on the season (like other teams in the past, see PSU last year). We've been very lucky to not be hit by injuries in the past couple of years (outside of Sprock last year, and we were lucky that Jacoby was able to slide into that position and transition so well to D1 lacrosse).

If rankings mattered that much, then Michigan would be in playoffs every year and winning titles. Instead, for all those high level recruits, this would be their 1st year just making the conference tourney under the old rules (when only the top 4 teams made it). Let's not forget they still have yet to make the NCAA playoffs.

And JHU, go on their fan boards and all they talk about is how the administration doesn't support the team.

Any RU recruit should see the support of the team, hard to believe that would be missed. They just built an entire building for the lacrosse and soccer teams. They are in the works of building a stadium. They can see 5K fans show up for games, and how the program needs overflow seating when hosting a playoff game.

The issue will always be playing in a conference that is one of the best top to bottom. No wonder some teams in other conferences look like they get it together at the end of the season, it's because yeah, they are playing against weaker conference competition. Instead we start playing the best teams in the nation.

The conference thing is real. Uva didn’t win a conference game for years. Yet won a national title during that span.

The best thing is this conference provides opportunity. Sat will be another one

Never said other did not use it but now schools like Georgetown, ND and UMD will all be more attractive as lacrosse programs and schools than RU and our staff is struggling in the recruiting g game.
No doubt Stoller is good but where is the 21 goalie or the 20 or 19 goalie? Seems like a lot of misses in the goal and at the faceoff X

19? 20? It’s the year 23.

Georgetown paid $50k per transfer this off-season.

So attractive because why? Their recruiting isnt great.

Duegenio was a transfer after 1 year at St John’s where he proved himself.

He’s been here for 3 years.

Georgetown is pretty much a complete portal team. Almost all the top 6-7 on the Gtown offense are portal. The best defenseman on the Hoyas is a portal guy. Facts

And Georgetowns head coach does not hold a candle to Brecht IMO. Gtown is the biggest fraud in college lacrosse year over year.

Edit…if they get to Memorial Day then I’ll stand corrected but for a team that gets massive hype, they’ve done very little in the post season…

Your comments about JHU are real. They don’t have the money of other big ten schools. They’ve been awful the last 3 years…they’re good this year

People in the NY/NJ region seem to fall for the Michigan myth…really nice school, but not close to an Ivy…not even the best school in the Midwest (see NW and ND)…UM is loaded with NY kids with parents that fall for the brand and their kids end up with a liberal arts degree that leaves them needing to go to a masters program just to get a job…sad

Lacrosse is not even on the radar in Ann Arbor. It’s not close. I actually like the UM coach and have a number of kids/families I like at UM…but it’s not nearly as followed in Michigan as it is out at these east coast schools. Lax at Rutgers is far more important and supported. Before people on this board start talking about how good Michigan is, let’s wait for them to (1) beat Rutgers and (2) make a tourney game. UM has elite fogo play….with out it, they would not have won a game in conference play…UM won 29 of 37 face offs vs OSU last night…it’s impossible to lose a game when you have that many possessions. Apologies to face off parents out there but that position that is a crap shoot to recruit has far to much impact on a game…face offs should be taken out of the game. I’d vote tomorrow to go with the sixes format. Team scores a goal…other team gets to start the clear with 80 seconds…give a quick 60 second break to set players and then blow the whistle and start the clear the other way…

Let’s pump the brakes on talking about Michigan on this board until they beat Rutgers at least once….

Agreed. No idea what Ascot is talking about.

The parents of the bench guys decided they wanted to win a NC for their kids and bought a team for this year.
