BB Recruiting Noah Fernandes visiting RU

Would be a perfect one year rental. Led team in scoring as a junior at 14.9 ppg, and also led them in scoring this year at 13.4 ppg (and 45% on 19-52 from deep) but was limited to 11 games due to injury.

Enough older that it's unlikely they know each other but he played for the same EYBL Club - Expressions - that Gavin Griffiths played for

High percentage 3 pt shooter, can get his own shot, drives and kicks to shooters, hits a shooter in transition - love it!

would seem our best target out there, will he be willing to perhaps not play 32 minutes a game where at Butler he almost certainly will

Just got done doing a writeup on him if anyone's interested...

UMass' Noah Fernandes is listed at 5-11, 180 lbs and went to HS at Woodstock Academy in Mattapoisett, MA. He signed with Wichita State out of HS and spent one year that before transferring to UMass. He entered the portal on March 13th and has 1 year of eligibility remaining.

Rutgers fans should remember him from this moment in 2021...

Fernandes only played in 11 games in 2022-23 due to an ankle injury he sustained in December. Prior to the injury, he was averaging 13.4 ppg (48% FG percentage, 45.2% 3 pt percentage on 4 attempts/game), 4.1 assists/game, 1.3 steals/game and 64% from the FT line. In his career at UMass, he's averaged 76% from the line, 38.5% from 3, 13.6 ppg, 4.9 assist/game and 1.5 steals/game.

Evan Miya has him ranked as the 41st ranked player in the portal out of 1,281 players who have entered the portal this offseason.

Fernandes is an undersized guard but has the ability to create his own shot and also create for others. He's a high level shooter from deep and his go-to move is his crossover and pull-up jumper. He's got a deep bag of moves and reads defenses well. He's got a quick trigger finger and doesn't hesitate when an open shot presents itself, even when from 27 ft+. He'd be a fantastic addition to this team as he's also a very good defender...

Interesting player, definitely more of an orchestrating guard. If it helps with the New England marketplace or AAU affiliates there, I'm all in.

He definitely gives us a different look or style of play, vs what we have on the roster.

5'11"? Are there other Big Ten guards with similar size?
How is his defense going to play in the BT?

Is HC Pike going to bury a sophomore Simpson for a 1 year rental?

Simpson is not a true point guard, can back up both the 1 and 2. We have trouble getting past midcourt in under 10 seconds with both Paul and Derek. This guy would be a breath of fresh air bringing the ball up the court and setting up the offense, and then add to that the fact he is an excellent 3 point shooter.

Exactly!
5'11" Noah Fernandes had 16 points and 11 assists with Paul/Caleb and whoever else guarding him when he played us.
Watching his tape he's less athletic than I anticipated -- he's not blowing by guys to get to the rim. But he's very crafty getting to his shot and his 2P% isn't wildly inefficient or anythng.

Comparing him in only ONE specific skill, the way he gets in the paint and creates space for his shot looks like Chris Paul.
If he can do that and finish and spray to shooters and lob to Cliff... I'm excited.

Looking at the UMass schedule,

He played in the first 7 games, UMass went 6-1, wins over Colorado, Murray St, Charlotte, and Harvard when injured.

UMass finished the season 15-16, 9-15 after he went down. He played in 4 games, Dec-Jan, before shutting it down and UMass went 1-3 in those 4 games, FG 52.4%, 3pt 47.4%, 16.8pts, 5.3asts. eFG 63.1%.

This would be an ideal 1 year rental if Paul decides to not come back, he doesn't come here if Paul returns.

It's a sign the coaching staff knows something we don't as far as Paul returning.

Your last sentence is why I want him along with his stats and skills.

At this point, I couldn’t care less how tall or short he is. The kid can shoot and score in a variety of ways and also distributes.

Michigan (Dug McDaniel), Purdue (Braden Smith), Maryland (Jahmir Young), Iowa (Tony Perkins), and Northwestern (Boo Buie) are doing just fine with smaller, quick lead guards.

I think this would be great upgrade at PG position for us.
If we are trying to pick up PG through transfer, is Paul good as gone for next year? I think writing is on the wall...

Thanks for all that.

if Noah comes

PG - Noah
SG - Cam
F - Gavin
F - Mag
C - Cliff (assume he comes back)

G - Simpson
F/C - Wolf
F - Hyatt (if he stays...)
F/C - Chol
F - Ndongo
G - Davis

not bad... would love another veteran Big Man

It's a sign the coaching staff knows something we don't as far as Paul returning.
I can't see three fifth year guards in the backcourt, only way this works is moving Paul back to a forward spot with Mag, if healthy in November, Derek has to be the first guard off the bench next year getting 20-25 minutes with Paul/Cam or Noah/Cam, and Jamichael Davis, 2nd guard off the bench.

Top three forwards will be either Mag/Hyatt/Gavin without Paul or Paul and no Noah, or Paul/Mag/Gavin, Noah in and Hyatt transferring. Cliff/Woolf at the 5. Chol and NDongo(10&11) will back up 3/4/5.

I agree with the comment that Rutgers projects to be far better than Butler next season. If he wants a better chance of dancing, we should be a better option than Butler. Looks like a definite take for me if he is interested. Simpson would still get a lot of PT.
