I been keeping tabs of the wrestling team on Twitter, but I still have no idea what is happening and how scoring works when I watch the matches. Is there a wrestling 101 site to explain of all this or is something willing to post the basis? With Big Ten taking this sport so seriously and matches being on TV, I want to watch without being completely lost during the match.

Thanks in advance!

Try to sit with someone at an event who was a college wrestler (or high level high school) and let them explain it to you. Better than at a live match, tape a televised match. That way you can review in slow motion how things happened leading up to points, pins and/or why people get upset with ref calls, etc.

Some ultra-basic sites:

Let's see if we can get really basic. Hopefully people can correct anything I'm wrong about or missing:

Match Points

* Both wrestlers are standing to start the match in the first period. The second and third period either start with one wrestler down or
both wrestlers standing (each wrestler gets the choice in one or the
other period).
* If both wrestlers are standing, and one takes the other wrestler down (basically, if they have control of the other wrestler and are behind him), he'll get 2 points.
* The closer that wrestler gets to pinning his opponent (near fall) after taking them down, they can earn a bunch of extra points (2 to 4 depending on time in this position).
* If the wrestler who was taken down escapes, he gets 1 point.
* If the wrestler on the bottom happens to not only get out, but escape
and, in the process, switch positions to top, then they get 2 points for
the reverse.
* If a wrestler is penalized too often for stalling or illegal holds or other things, the opponent will get a point or two (based on ref discretion).
* If by chance one wrestler has been on top for at least a minute longer than his opponent (called riding time), he'd get one bonus point at the end of the match.

Team Points

* A team gets three points if a member wins a match by 1-7 points (decision).
* A team gets four points if a member wins a match by 8-14 points (major decision).
* A team gets five points if a member wins a match by 15+ points (technical fall). At that point, the match is called unless the guy is in the process of pinning the guy.
A team gets six points if a member pins an opponent or there is a forfeit or disqualification or default (injury).

if you have BTN record the Iowa match on January 2nd. they will have decent graphics and announcers to hopefully help follow along when points are scored.

pins end matches and are the ultimate move. takedowns score most of the points points (tackling, tripping and throwing a guy from a standing position to the ground). in college wrestling, controlling a guy when they are on the mat is a sign of dominance and in international matches it will come from tossing a guy in the air. don't sweat any of the other details, they'll be made clear the more you watch.

I was just looking on Wikipedia and noticed that they wrote something along the lines of it not being a tech fall if there weren't any back points. Is this true? (I'm not a novice watching the sport, but don't have anywhere near the background or knowledge as most of the sport's followers.)

4 pt tech. match still ends once you open up a 15 pt lead but if you fail to score back points you only earn 4 instead of 5 team points. can't remember if i've ever seen it happen. not really sure why it's a rule either.

I disagree Leonard...I love it, and would love to see it on the high school level..makes you have to score from all positions and not just be a takedown artist..

As a former wrestler I agree.

A takedown artist who win with a 30-15 tech fall while impressive doesn't mean he is a sound technical wrestler. It just means he mastered one phase of a 3 phase sport

the 4 pt tech almost never happens, at least at the D1 level, so i'm not sure how much influence it has on anyone's training. if one wrestler is able to take another one down 10-15 times in one match you are almost certainly dealing with vastly different ability levels and the superior wrestler will be able to pin the inferior one.

i don't find the idea that people will eschew turning and pinning skills because they want to be takedown specialists at the elite D1 level because of the incentive of a tech fall credible. more like someone came up with a practically useless rule with good intention that no one opposed.

If you takedown someone a ton & win by 15, then you dominated & should get 5 team points, regardless of whether you got any backs.

The object of wrestling is control & pin. Tech falls were briefly 6 points and the unintended consequence was no pins. A pin is ultimate control and the point of wrestling. So the 5 point victory was established for tech fall. If you can nto get at least a 2 point tilt, you have not come close to achieving the point of wrestling, which is a fall.
So i like the 4, 5, & 6 point sequence.

First off...Merry Christmas to all!! Now I'm sorry Jaroslav, and Leonard, but I still disagree..Leonard...yes you dominated on your FEET, but that 5th point should be rewarded for dominating all 3 phases of the match!! Jaroslav I saw several 4 pt techs just on televised matches last year so I don't feel that it is that rare...I think Josh nailed the concept of what the rule was intended for and I 100% agree with that assessment...Now we may agree to disagree...but I think we can all agree on this....Let's kick some Hawkeye ass next Friday!!!!
