Ohio State LB Quits Mid Game

COLUMBUS — K’Vaughan Pope was headed for an early exit at Ohio State.

Then the Buckeyes appeared to force him to take it.

After trying to run out on the field in a substitution package in the second quarter on Saturday night against Akron, the senior linebacker was waved off by teammate Teradja Mitchell. Once getting back to the sideline, a visibly upset Pope started walking down the sideline by himself and was heading back to the locker room on his own.
Eventually he was corralled by Buckeyes staffer C.J. Barnett in the south end zone, and Pope was guided back to the sideline. Once there, though, Pope took off his gloves and threw them into the stands and began removing his Ohio State jersey — which apparently caught the attention of coach Ryan Day. After another conversation with multiple staffers, Pope was then led to the locker room while the game was ongoing.

He tried to substitute in for another player and got waived off to stay on the sideline, likely already not happy at lack of play time and flipped out
Ohh.. an LB already on the field refused to be substituted for... you don't quit because of that.. you go out there anyway and force a timeout and let the coaches handle the discrepancy.

Did Ryan Day address this in the postgame presser? Can’t see OSU allowing the kid back on the team.

This is true, I have never seen anything like it before. Maybe the great Ryan Day is not as good as we think he is? The fact that the staff couldn’t get control of this player is incredible.
A one-off is not a red flag. The kid could have issues. If it happens with someone else, it could be.

Didn’t she do the opposite. She asked to be subbed out because she knew she couldn’t perform. She didn’t quit because she was going to start.

Yes, it was literally the opposite. A player stepping away who felt they weren't in a condition to complete and supporting her substitute and teammates from the sidelines..... vs a player rage quitting during a competition because he didn't get playing time, leaving the field and cursing out the program in a public forum.

Some of the post-game questions directed at Day seemed to imply there is some turmoil in the program.

There is some guy in Jacksonville that did ok there. And no, I didn’t mean the guy who is into hydration.

seems like a "Me first player" and not a "Team first player"

addition by subtraction.
The average Ohio state player is one of the best coming out of high school, and was fawned over and treated like a hero

For a few of them, being regulated to the bench, never getting what they consider a fair shot, somewhere, somehow, during an easy win, must be personally frustrating
A real come down for them, one not expected when coming out of high school

Of course, we normally do not see this reaction from a bench player...... but the possibility is there

And of course it is totally unacceptable

Lol seems short sighted on your part . We don’t know this guy’s past or mental health situation . Many gave biles a pass and she’s a professional athlete , not a kid playing for his school

No , but both quit during competition . Like I said biles as a pro got a pass. We don’t know this guy’s health situation . Seems like a double standard,.
No idea how these are in the same universe. One stepped away because they felt they couldn't safely compete, the other because they were mad at another player for not letting them compete. The follow up behavior afterward is also night and day.

Have to have a real animosity toward Biles to put them in the same conversation.

He's done. He was pissed because he was passed on the depth chart by younger players and wasn't getting the playing time he thought he deserved.

The two circumstances just aren't similar. The only thing similar is some wrong wingers trying to find a culture war axe to grind every chance they get.
You don’t know they aren’t similar . We have no idea what this guy’s mental health is and if they played a role . Biles got a pass, and maybe this guy should too until we know more.

How do you know what was going through this kid’s mind ? And again biles is a professional , this is a kid playing college football . If anything, there should be more leeway for the college kid.
