Ohio State LB Quits Mid Game

How do you know what was going through this kid’s mind ? And again biles is a professional , this is a kid playing college football . If anything, there should be more leeway for the college kid.
The only similarity is that a person was with the team, and then they weren't. They both have about as much common with Julius Turner leaving the game yesterday, or Omoruyi leaving the Ohio State game a couple years back.

Biles stepped away from competition because she felt she wasn't able to safely compete. There was no altercation with a teammate or coach, there was no tearing off of her uniform or being escorted out of the competition space by staff, there was no throwing part of her uniform into the stands, there was no follow up comments blasting US Gymnastics. She instead supported the rest of her team and cheered on the person who stepped in to fill her slot.

Pope quit after he was pulled off the field of play because the defensive package was switched, and he got angry at the loss of playing time. He had an altercation with coaches, he threw his gloves into the stands, he took off his uniform while on the sideline, and he was escorted to the locker room. His departure didn't even rob his team of a player on the field, since he wasn't even supposed to be playing that down - and he was a situational use player to begin with. He then followed it up with a tweet bashing the program. He quit on his team because he was frustrated at not being able to play.

This is a different situation at pretty much every point.
- Biles was being asked to play, and she chose not to.... while Pope was being asked not to play, and he threw a fit over it.
- Biles actually stopped competing and allowed her backup to step in.... while Pope wasn't even competing in the first place, and was angry that his backup was getting a snap instead of him
- Biles continued to support her team from the sidelines.... while Pope had to be removed to the locker room
- Biles didn't cause a scene by arguing with coaches and throwing part of her equipment into the stands.... while Pope did
- Biles continued to be vocally supportive of her program.... while Pope bashed them on social media.

But sure, they both were with the team, and then they weren't. They are also both athletes, and both human beings. The similarities pretty much stop there, though.

You don’t what was going through Pope’s mind .

A coaching staff cannot allow the type of behavior that Pope exhibited on the sidelines during the game, followed up by the F OSU tweet later that evening. Those actions fall under the heading of Violation of Team Rules mo.

If he has mental health issues he should speak up before the door hits him in the butt on the way out.

Even if the result was the same for Biles and Pope (player not playing), the way they got there is different and it matters. Even if you disagree with Biles, you can’t fault her for how she did it. For Pope, even if you think he is right, even if you agree with him, his approach was wrong.

I've been on the OSU boards this morning and one of their writers - Tom Orr - pointed out that part of the problem for some of the older players is that OSU had extremely strong 2020 and 2021 classes, maybe their 2 best back-to-back - ever, but certainly in their top 2 or 3 back-to-back ever. He said that a few of "the pups are biting right now." He meant that a few upperclassmen have been passed by freshman, RS freshman, and sophomores and aren't too happy about it. Senior LB Dallas Gant just entered the portal about a week ago after also being passed up by younger players. Both Gant and Pope were Urban Meyer recruits and were not happy at all about what;s happening.

They've had 12 - 2020 and 2021 recruits - play major roles on their defense this year which accounts somewhat for their confusion but it's also been pointed out that it goes right back to DC Kerry Coombs who should have never been promoted to DC which is on Day. A few have said that this is the year to beat OSU due to the "perceived" impact the the 2020 and 2021 classes will have on the future.

Also, and I am not saying this is the reason for what Pope did, but the new NIL environment puts upperclassmen in a position where they may lose chances at contracts and income if an underclassman takes away their PT. transfer portal may become very active with players who want a final chance at a piece of the pie.

I’m not gonna lie: I fully expect more of this to happen moving forward. 20 years ago this piece of shit would’ve had a crap beaten out of him by his teammates. But not today. I’ll leave it at that.

100% spot-on. I am really really nice regarding my thoughts on this. If that was my kid he would never see the light of day again.

Just a few days ago getting arrested for shooting people with paintballs warrants only a one-game suspension in some posters’ minds. Now removing part of your uniform and sending a couple of tweets warrants being kicked off a team.

There is a bit of a difference. What Melton and Long did was on there own time outside the confines of the football program. Pope embarrassed his coaching staff on the field in front of tens of thousands of fans. Schiano has the right to be disappointed, annoyed, etc but not personally embarrassed. Day was being shown up. You don’t do that to your head coach and expect that coach to be forgiving.

Why should he have to speak up ? You don’t know what’s going through his mind .
Sounds like a double standard !! Once again ,’plum street nails it !

Law and order has returned to Buckeye Nation. They won’t have K’Vaughan Pope to kick around anymore.

“Ohio State coach Ryan Day announced Sunday that senior linebacker K'Vaughan Pope has been dismissed from the team after he stormed off the field during the No. 11 Buckeyes' 59-7 win over Akron on Saturday out of apparent frustration. This after he was waved off a play in the first half. Pope, who was considered a potential starter for OSU entering the season, played mostly as a reserve in the team's first four games.”

Pope gets to retain his scholarship till the end of the semester.

Those this analogy is still early to make ...The Ohio state program under Day post urban Meyer has some issues that is starting to arri8.3 thsr remind me of the Larry Coker era post butch Davis at Miami after the players
Became more of the current coach’s recruits ....

Coker won a national title and had another one stolen from him. Not bad .

Day still has this thing rolling.

I feel bad for the kid. A four star recruit who is a senior in college, can't spell the F~ work while tendering his resignation, someone needs to investigate the academics of Ohio State athletes.

Good. No need for nonsense like that you don’t quit on your teammates like he did in the middle of a game.

Wasn’t Day an assistant under Meyer? If so he recruited Pope and the others who are now losing their spots on the 2 deep.

Could it be that OSU’s recruiting under Day is better than it was under Meyer?

I'll never forget my freshman year in HS [freshman game) ..Our starting QB got in some type of argument with an Official..He took off his whole uniform on field and ran back to our field house in a jock strap..It was nuts..He definitely matured and by his senior year was Future Rutgers QB Tom Tarvers top receiver..He ended up playing receiver at West Chester

Probably similar to the UNC curriculum.

In Pope's case, he intentionally disrespected his entire team. If a player intentionally and publicly disrespects the entire team, how do you allow that player to remain?

In Max and Chris's case (if they even did it, which has not been established in a courtroom), it was not done to intentionally disrespect or damage their team. It did damage the team, inadvertently so they should be punished. But I think dismissal isn't warranted unless they are unremorseful and demonstrate an inability to truly understand their ethical lapse.

😱

You'd put him on ice? Off him? Put him six feet under? Give him cement shoes? Chain him to a basement wall where there are no windows?

If that's you being "really really nice", I'd hate to see you pissed off. 😃

If the indefinite suspension is for an isolated or one-time paintball incident, you know other teams will use it on the recruiting trails to belittle Rutgers.

It's a gang thing. Also college isn't what it used to be it is no longer an education but just a credential you pay big money for. Totally unnecessary for most purposes in life.

Same thing happened to Pope that happened to Brendon White. Brendon was coming off the Rose Bowl MVP season but the new DC after Schiano changed the scheme to more of a zone scheme with only 1 safety and 3 corners, and Brendon goes from being a starting safety to a hybrid safety/linebacker where he only saw 15-20 snaps a game.

So new DC this year changed the SAM linebacker (where Pope was expected to start) to a hybrid deal and he just hadn't been seeing the field much. Obviously he didn't handle the frustration anywhere nearly as well as Brendon did.

If I had to guess I bet his teammates didn’t care much at all. The younger guys probably laughed and the older guys understood. He handled it poorly but everyone of these guys are selfish as hell. It’s all about getting to the league. So, they get it when guys move on.

Not sure I understand the process for making defensive substitutions at LB during a game. Don’t the coaches make the call on LB substitutions?

The original story said that Pope was waved off by a player on the field from getting into the next play and that caused his sideline antics.

Can anyone explain how this works?
