OT: 2019 Mets Season Thread

The rest of this month will serve as somewhat of an early season litmus test for where they are in comparison to some of the rivals. Starting tomorrow they will be @Braves, @Phillies, @Cards, then home for Phillies and Brewers.

Worst case scenario.

Schedule has been tough early except for the Marlins and won't get better. Funny that what I predicted before the season has already come true that we enough bats but pitching depth is going to hurt us bad.

McNeil with a bonehead baserunning mistake on a passed ball. Why in the hell was he frozen a third of the way down the line? Clearly, the catcher had recovered by throwing the ball to the pitcher covering home. The pitch froze trying to decide which base to throw the ball. The runners at 2nd and 1st broke back while McNeil stood there. It wasn't until the pitcher threw to 3rd did McNeil break back to the base, but he was out by a country mile.

Can anyone in the bullpen aside from Diaz get anyone out. On a positive note, I like Thor's approach tonight using the two seam sinker and letting them put the ball in play. Saves pitches and lets the starter go longer.

Who is concerned about Robinson Cano?

Stats of Interest: Hard hit Rate has decreased from 43% in 2016 to 21% to date in 2019. Has been decreasing each year.

K Rate has increased from 14% in 2016 to 2% in 2019. Rate has been increasing annually.

Others have mentioned about slower bat speed swing as well.

Long season so I am holding judgment and also hoping that NL adopts DL soon and we can slide Cano into that role eventually.

If anybody wants to pay off their mortgage I’d strongly advise you to bet the Braves this Saturday. I’m going and In the 25 years I’ve been attending Mets vs Braves games here in Atlanta I think my record is like 5-45. The Mets will probably win the other 3 games of the series but Vargas pitching and me going is a net negative.
Maybe it’s just me since last August I had the honor of throwing out the first pitch at the Braves vs Rockies game and that night I was all in on the Braves and they lost 11-5 and it got so bad the crowd was calling for me to go in. I think the Braves won the rest of the games in the series.

If Cano can't hit anymore we have major problems and why a lot of us were questioning the trade at the time. I also don't want someone who can't hit as DH.

Mets castoffs helping fuel Mariners’ MLB-best record
Jay Bruce leading the AL with 7 homers, but with a .188 average.

Swarzak was supposed to play a role as the bridge of the Mets bullpen last year, but he was plagued by injuries and poor performances. But he’s found himself as the Mariners’ early-season closer in filling Edwin Diaz’s role. Swarzak notched his second save Tuesday. He’s been flawless in limited work, striking out three while surrendering just one hit in 2 2/3 innings pitched.

not interested in Bruce's 7 HR and 188 ave at all. Over the long season, we should be fine in the OF without him. Also think that Cano will find his way and have a normal season and it seems his presence is good on this team full of young kids. Would prefer to see McNeil at 2B and playing every day but if he can be servicable in the OF, that works for me too. JD Davis is starting to grow on me too.
Absolutly need to keep Alonso/Comforto/Ramos healthy.

Two early observations. The team can hit and put hits together in bunches. The bullpen is full of firemen, unfortunately they are of the Fahrenheit 451 variety.

How can so many teams have so many pitchers throw 95 plus in the back end of their bullpens, and still not be able to close out the 7th and 8th innings? Their talking expansion again with 2 more teams to balance out the leagues, oh Lord.

Need Matz to keep pitching like this. Hopefully, deGrom only had a bad day, Thor becomes dominate(he hasn't really had a great game yet but he keeps us in the games) and then have Wheeler find his way. Vargas is a lost cause.
And thank god we don't have Sandy as GM anymore or Alonso would be tearing up AAA

MLB needs to work on getting some of these franchises out of cities before expansion. Tampa Rays is one of the best teams in baseball, or at least one of the most consistent organizations in the last decade. Too bad their fans and stadium is crap because this team would be celebrated more if they were in another city (not even going to mention if the Dodgers or Mets had the same success as the Rays have). MLB should just pull the plug and move them to where ever the IT city is this week.

Same thing with the Marlins, who DEFINITELY should not be in Miami and I wouldnt be surprised if the current ownership cant do squat with them without trading away all good players with a pulse.

Where should they move the teams to? Portland, Charlotte, San Antonio, Austin, any other ideas?

Well I'm actually gonna give Alderson some credit because I think all of our homegrown players........Alonso, Rosario, McNeil, Conforto, Nimmo, Smith etc were brought in during his tenure. If not his than certainly the equally disparaged Omar Minaya.

He has the stuff he just needs to trust it enough to be confident in getting ahead of the hitters.
