OT: 2019 Mets Season Thread

First job is catching. He can't move. Anything in the dirt and he doesn't even try to block the ball. Just sticks a glove out there and ole's it.
Best catcher Mets have had in over 5 years. That's not saying much. Ramos is the least of the Mets worries.
That's true he has been the best they've had in a while. Still not solid defensively.

Not only are they playing like crap they're starting to look bad fundamentally. Cut the throw off dont cut the ball off? Who's on first? What's on second? If this guy Gagnon isn't DFA tonight something is seriously wrong.

Welp, I’ll take a knock on Ramos/Grandal - just couldn’t stomach Grandal after that postseason drear.

Flexen, soon he might be 0-10 in his Mets career.
Mets still have hopes for Flexen. He was just recently converted to the bullpen, having been a starter his entire career. Probably where he should have been all along, as he is pretty much a two-pitch pitcher. Reportedly he has had an uptick in velocity. He's still only 24. And clearly he's in much better physical shape than when he first came up two years ago.

He'll go back down if he can't get batters out. But I'd be very surprised if he's DFA'd. If they need a spot on the 40 man (which right now they don't, they're at 39), I think they'll find it elsewhere.

I stand corrected about his batting. However, he is still horrible behind the plate, even Keith and Ronnie have mentioned his lack of mobility back there.

And I was not judging his performance only from this past weekend. Merely cherry picking his horrible throws, much like you did with his one nice throw.

After last night, it is time to tear this down. I see the manager making it through the to the All Star break and then sayonara. Once he goes it will signal a going out of business sale. Keep DeGrom, Matz and Noah on the staff, everyone else can go. Keep McNeill Alonso, Rosario, Conforto and Smith. Everyone else available. I would even consider trading Noah if someone would take back Cano in the deal. I am not expecting much of a return for the remainder of the roster, but clear them out and start anew.

Yes, but can you name the last two catchers for the Mets that were memorable for fine defensive play?

Starting or just in general? Lo Duca was ok. Omir Santos? Rod Barajas? It's a barren history of good defensive catching you're not wrong. Nickeas/Blanco ughhhh.

Heres something out of the box that will never happen because he will never go for it: Make Syndergaard the closer. Maybe he can rare back and fire 100 mph fastballs for an inning or 2 at a time and dont have to worry about going on the IL as much.

Just a mediocre team they've put together by just about every metric. Poor defensively, which cost them big time last night. Largely undisciplined hitters. Wheeler was his usual spotty self on the mound but if might have been him who put together the best at-bat last night by spoiling pitches before working a walk. Just about anytime one of their pitchers walks a leadoff batter in an inning(which is way too often) they almost always wind up scoring.

If you insist on keeping the only players that anyone would want, that's hardly tearing it down.

It's well known that Callaway is a player's manager, and especially a pitcher's manager. Yet he seems a bit pissed off at his bullpen:

"We just stunk," Callaway said. "Again. We weren't good. We have got to recalibrate what we are doing and do the job better, plain and simple. ... When one guy fails at something, the next guy has got to step up in his stead and get the job done and we're not doing it. We're gonna keep on running 'em out there until they do (succeed). Or we're gonna have to get some new ones."

I do hope Drew Gagnon's apartment rental is month-to-month. Do they offer rentals day-to-day?

In today's game you need young athletic players. The core I suggested keeping aside from Jake is fairly young. I did not suggest we would get a large return on the others and some such as Cano are untradeable. But you can get a return on Wheeler, Vargas, Lugo and G-Man. If Diaz and JF return to form they will bring value. For the position players, there should be a taker for TF, and maybe Ramos if someone needs a catcher. Lagares would be a nice 4th outfielder for a contender. The point is keep the young guys, trade or release the vets and call off this charade that we are a contender.

Assuming they clean house as suggested in my post above, your lineup could be:
1. McNeill 3B
2. Smith / Davis LF
3. Alonso 1B
4. Conforto RF
5. Cano 2B
6. Rosario SS
7. Lagares CF
8. Nido C

Not murders row but you give Rosario, McNeill, Alonso and Conforto a chance to develop further and we find out if Smith and Davis can play. That is really all that is left for this season anyway.

Next year you hopefully get back a healthy Ces and Anthony Kay is up and ready and continue to build from there.

Good response. My thoughts:
  • Wheeler brings back a return comparable to Addison Reed a couple of years ago. A few midlevel prospects, but nothing special. Vargas, probably less. Lugo - I think teams would be leery about a reliever who can't be used back to back days. I doubt Gsellman has much value at all.
  • Trading Diaz at this point would be classic "Buy high, sell low". Not a winning strategy. Plus if your point is "keep the young guys", remember he is just 25.
  • Familia has no trade value, unless the Mets eat a good chunk of his contract, which is not their style.
  • Frazier won't bring back much. The market for power hitting corner position players is thin. Look at how cheaply the Yankees got Encarnacion! Teams already have bats. What they want is arms.
  • Trading Ramos would be contingent on the Mets eating his contract. Again, not their style.
  • Lagares brings back nothing. Zip zilch nada.
You want to get more athletic? You've got two not-too-athletic guys at the same position - Smith and Alonso. Are you willing to trade Smith?

So, are you rebuilding or are you not? If you are, then you need to rebuild your minor league system. It will take bigger moves than the ones you suggest.

What's firing the manager going to do? Is the bullpen going to be suddenly good with a new manager?

After last night, it is time to tear this down. . . . .
This is probably right, but the problem is Van Wagon Wheel. Only the Mets would have hired a guy who had not one ounce of experience in a front office and no qualifications for the job. He went on to prove this in the off-season, making no successful moves and showing that he's the only GM in baseball stupid or green enough to trade for a 36 year old player with 5 years 100 million left on his contract, and to include important prospects in the deal. Moron. You think it's bad this year with Cano, wait 'til next year, and then the next, and then the next. . . . . And then the next.

So, whether the Mets decide to buy or sell, they don't have a GM who knows how to do either. I was worried when the numbnut Wilpons hired this guy, and now I'm already firmly in the camp that he's a joke. This is a long slow walk to whenever they are forced to fire him, which could be several years.

By the way, firing Callaway will be close to irrelevant. As things go, his negative contributions are just rounding errors. The roster (and the minors) is the real problem.

Alas. The Wilpons. They're the Dolans with no money.

I will go further the only 4 untouchables should be Alonso, McNeil, DeGrom and Lugo. Everyone else should be packaged and shipped out.

I think I put Conforto in that group as well. I would let Rosario go as it seems there are good hitting and better fielding SS's all over baseball. I love Smith but he has the most value at this time and Davis could possibly bring back something if he were packaged the right way.
The problem is that no one is going to take Cano, Frazier, JL or Familia.

A wee bit too late to be upset.

Meanwhile, Chaim Bloom is a part of making the Tampa Rays one of the best organizations in baseball with a shite stadium and probably a half of the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Dodgers, Cubs budget.

The entire team is fun to watch when they are winning. Conforto had a great night too.

Well yes in a win correct. Individually so far this year Alonso and McNeil are by far the best. I love Conforto and deGrom has definitely rounded into what we know of him. Mickey is still lost warming up Diaz in a blowout and not giving Nogosek an inning.
