OT: 2021-22 NHL Regular Season Thread

Yeah canned him. Surprised. He's a very good coach (IMO) who had the team play at a level that far exceeds their talent. Realize last year was a tough one but still surprised.

Took the worst defensive team and made them the best in a year. Whether the Devils take a run at him or not is a real test for their ownership.

Yes please....Devils need someone like that who will implement some real structure to the way we play.

Kinda disagree. This team has talent. Just not the scoring kind, lol.

But, no doubt he squeezed every drop out of these guys. Still say NYI would probably come out of their division if they made the playoffs. They are big, tough, defensively sound, and have great goalies. Those teams always do well in the playoffs. Usually don’t win it all, but they do a lot of damage to teams that are built for reg season games.

Lou Lamoriello doing Lou Lamoriello things. What in the actual F is he thinking?
I know what he WANTS to do. But, he’s been reading his HOF creds too much if he thinks he will get a better coach for this crew.

Read Krup's post above. Worst to first re: defense is coaching not talent.

There is all kinds of talent. And I agree, this coach is really, really good. He was the best fit for that talent. What are they going to - bring in a better defensive specialist? Or worse, get in a offensive minded coach? Ha. That‘s just what they need - to open things up. Yeah, that will go well with this group, lol.

I get that LL doesn’t have a lot of options (some of his own doing). But, I don’t get canning a very good coach, that fits your team like a glove, for one weird year.

The accepted wisdom amongst most hockey people (and I think it translates somewhat to football) is that defensive performance can be impacted greatly by a coach and his system, while offensive performance is mostly going to come down to talent.

That is why I think the Devils going after Trotz would be smart, even if as a Ranger fan I would hate it. He would clean up the mess they have on the defensive side and they have enough skilled offensive players they could get really good in a hurry.

I forget if it was this thread of the playoff thread... get Nemeth the hell out of there

Well, now we know how Vegas could get rid of Gallant midseason after making the final the previous year. I read that he got too attached to certain players but this is ridiculous.

If Lindgren was healthy I'd be ballistic because no way Nemeth should play over Braun. But at this point, I'd rather see Hajek or literally anyone else. He's taken multiple penalities and is a minus player every game.

On the OTHER extreme of the spectrum, you have the NYR. These guys were the ultimate tease this year - regular season heroes, but pillow soft and folding like a cheap suit when the PO pressure is on. Getting spanked by a one line team and Louis Domingue - yikes.

Total opposite of NYI. Maybe they can swap some players and both orgs can have more balanced teams.

With everything that has happened, only Louie Domingue winning surprises me. He could end up this year's playoffs Damien Rhodes. Oh those damn 98 Ottawa Senators!

As far as Lou Lamoriello, I guess he has not outgrown his impetuousness. Not a surprise, just look at his history. The short tenure of Kevin Constantine, out of nowhere, as a short-term NJ Devils coach comes to mind. Who knows maybe Trotz threw a bench after the season. 😆! At least I don't think he will name himself coach, this time.

The Rangers need some veteran leadership.......need to dump Reaves who does nothing and adds nothing...and should trade Strome when he has some trade value.

Would love the Devils to pick up Trotz.......shocking move by Islanders

I got a lot of heat on Rangers boards when I argued that extending Zibanejad was a dumb move.

His “play on the perimeter because he shuns contact after all of his head/neck injuries, gets most of his points on the power play and disappears at 5v5” style has sure been exposed in this series and his extension hasn’t even kicked in yet.

I can't disagree. The only argument one can make is that the entire team has been terrible. Did Strome even play last night? Panarin just forces passes. They stink.

Brooks article this morning was on point, and he rarely scathed the team that bad.

I like what I've seen from Miller and Schneider. Everyone else is a loser, either by choice, or by birth.

My only problem with Schneider is that consistently playing him has stunted the development of Jones and Lundkvist, because they believe they have to pair a veteran with these young defenseman and inexplicably think Nemeth is helpful to him (the small dataset of Schneider away from Nemeth shows otherwise).

I won’t kill Panarin because Strome has been superfluous since he came back, but Zibanejad is something like 5 goals is 35 career playoff games. He isn’t a playoff 1C and the big ice time he gets is killing them.

The Laf-Chytil-Kakko line has been fun to watch, because we even with mistakes they show a lot of life and energy while some veterans have disappeared.

I can see that too.

I see that point, but I also think Schneider has clearly shown more than Nils or Jones. Kinda ironic because thinking was Nemeth being Swedish would help usher Nils in.

I liked what I've seen from that line. I still think Laf and Kakko are going to be great and good players. I've grown tired of Chytil but that line, when not pinned in their own end, has been fun to watch.

Perfect lottery draw for the Devils! I hope they pick the big Juraj Slafkowsky.

I hate it looks like the "Jersey" uniforms, will be the home uniforms.

2 things I can say with absolute metaphysical certitude:
1 - ARI will not win. First, they only have a 16.5% chance. More importantly, the Hockey Gods just don’t seem to like that org, lol.
2 - NJD will absolutely win. They haven’t in a few years. And when they stink, the NHL can’t go that long without them getting a top 3 pick. It’s in the league‘s charter, hehe.
Ahem….

Chytil is better than most Ranger fans give him credit for, but he should be taking an entire offseason working on face offs.

Yeah I'd like to see them draft Slafkovsky too. I usually don't much stock in tournaments because it's small sample size, but he was a huge factor in Slovakia surprising everyone and winning bronze this year.

Where did you hear that about the jerseys? Man I really hope that isn't true.

I saw the new "Jersey", and the red Devils Jersey on either side of Fitzgerald tonight, I am using deductive reasoning here. I 🙏 I'm wrong, but have thought the owners would do something like this, as a money grab after they wore the new jersey so often.

As far as the pick, one of our biggest needs is big skilled wingers. This guy fits the bill perfectly. I would say if all goes well, a player like John Leclair. He also should help keep Jack and Jesper upright! I have even read some unnamed scouts bring up "Jagr ass".

My opinion : Trouba hit on Crosby was dirty - as it was elbow to head / face. . Though I’m rooting for Rangers , I don’t take any satisfaction when my team wins due to a perceived and I thought dirty play
I hope Crosby is ok and can play games 6 and 7
I think Trouba may be suspended which his actions may warrant.

Basic hockey play imo.
Defenseman attempting to play the game properly against a guy who’s been dominant you the entire series.
Your ONLY defense to attempt to neutralize Crosby is to hit him and separate him from the puck.
Rangers have learned you can’t stay with him and on top of him, he’s to elusive, gifted and strong.
He needs to be knocked on his ass as often as possible, that’s going to result in what you saw.
Had Trouba not attempted to get a piece of him with his shoulder and arm it would have resulted in just another free Crosby to make another play

I think complete opposite.

100% clean hit. Dumbass Crosby dropped down to avoid a shoulder on shoulder hit and caused the hit to his head.

Trouba will be suspended because the NHL kisses Crosby's ass and has been helping the Pens win the series.

I would not count on #8 playing game 6,

Trouba's two biggest problems, which I think will lead to a suspension. First, he did not keep his elbow in. Second, he hit Cindy Crosby. The diva of the NHL, and Bettman's boy.

I didn't think it was a dirty hit.
Having said that, if Crysby is unable to go for Game 6, count on Trouba getting at least 2 games.

Ridiculous criteria.
A guy with a history of concussions literally dominating you and you can’t knock him on his ass?
The only way to knock Crosby off the puck is to hit him in the upper body, he needs to watch his own head.
Attempting to eliminate Crosby by tying him up or cutting out his legs is a useless tactic…way to strong.
Watch your head in the middle of the ice Sidney

I agree 1000%.

Crosby is very much like Lemieux; abundantly talented. But, draws lots of penalties while dishing out plenty of uncalled transgressions.
Lemieux was not above swinging his stick, yet rarely called. I've seen Crosby slew foot and suckered punch on many occasions; most were uncalled.

Both him and Malkin. It was a hockey play and not a dirty hit. That said, as someone indicated above, its quote common for the league to make rash, illogical and inconsistent decisions re: discipline. And when it's the Pens and Crosby? Yikes
