I know this board is great on giving advice on things like this. My son will be takin g a job in KOP starting in January. Will be working for Lockheed Martin. will not buy right away but will be looking for a nice apartment / condo to rent. He saw one interesting option a place called Indigo which looks like a mix of retail, restaurants, etc.

If anyone knows the area and has any suggestions , it would be appreciated.

Don't do it.

Lived in King of Prussia for a year in 1990. Actually I'd side with RU backer-seemed like everyone there was trying to move to NJ. Actually see the job is in KOP so that isn't so bad I THINK.

I had to commute to Monument Road in Bala Cynwyd (Philly Border) and the commute on the Skukyll was BRUTAL. I remember 48 minutes to my office and that was taking a twisty windy road off the 1st exit from KOP. Don't know about traffic the opposite way (Conshohocken to KOP-opposite way Skukyll).

Lived in Gulph Mills Apartments in a studio back in 1990-91. Decent. I think the other apartment complex had a worse rep (inc violent crime).

I think the areas to the West (Valley Forge, Chester? had better reps). Bryn Mawr area fairly exclusive.

I worked out near Bryn Mawr (County Line Road/MainLine Road???) at what was then Main Line Nautilis. Good gym.

I really thought at least gym-wise people in NJ are much nicer.

Felt out of it from start. Moved away from my then RU friend, my childhood friend and had yet to meet my buddy on this board/R crew and his brother with whom I have done much (when I had money). Didn't meet anyone so I hated it. I had been mishired (in a way used by my Boss-and I DID tell them to tell me where to move with a 20 minute commute). I was far enough away from the RAC to go to any hoops games in a year we were decent (inc win over highly ranked Mssouri).

Pretty much got myself fired deliberately-company losing much money and had been bought out. In home territory of national leader in area. Approached my boss on 1st day of 10th month when certain benes kicked in (also overheard conversation where boss wanted me out, CEO wiling to move me elsewhere-which may have been a good move if I stay because think company moved there) Also left with little notice and boss quickly added my departure so a meeting to make him look good).

My mother had told me (interview went "too well") giver it a try and I could come home. I was set to take my LSATS (actually took before I left at Villanova 1-2 times before I left that was a disaster as frat types were talking to moderator throughout).

Then was getting bad work my mother was really sick and had to be hospitalized. I got word she had advanced terminal metastatic cancer and took my LSATS less than 48 hours afterwords (actually my luck best of 3 admins due to talking during LSAT (#1) and
major overhaul of LSAT making logic games (word I had is only 2 of 14 students in my Kaplan class got one of the games right) and reading comp much more difficult.

Mom (RIP) had operation (doctors came out looking sick) and passed away at night (after docs told me she had 6 months the same day I broke down becausec she looked sop bad after chemo kicked in? Overdose? Also timing suspicious as that mercy killer nurse was working there near that date. Mom weirdly passed 45 minutes after I had gone to sleep early and jumped up in bed after I thought I heard her call my name. I picked up the phone when the doc called to confirm death (said he had tired to revive for 45 minutes-likely cr*p-and begged my father not to sue him! That period reallyhurt my career and of course my mentally ill evil sister's real problems started after that (see my long post other thread re food drive).

The King of Prussia Mall was sizable and lots of shopping in area. Phillies (at time?) weren't too bad a drive up Skukyll?/else. Comcast Center is nice. Airport (drive?) has a rep for cheap flights-believe it's a major SouthWest Air Hub. Good place to go back to school for another college degree-Villanova (boo), St. Joes, Temple (if you don't mind inner city) Brun Mawr, and Haverford are only a few colleges nearby.

If he's fresh out of college or even a few years of college look into Manayunk. Lots of 20 year old young professionals with a downtown and bar scene. If he's looking for something nicer and is over the bar scene then as suggested Conshohocken is the next place to look.

76 is more often than not a parking lot so the commute from Philly to KOP would get old real fast.

At any point do you think to hit the cancel button, ever? Or are these the posts that you already self edit and decide - "yeah I am gonna go ahead and hit 'post'"?

Ash ,
Don't listen to this clown . You're a person with life exprience and I thank you for sharing .

Well not getting paid for the edits. Also (heavy traffic?) was having a tough time editing. (My laptop gets stuck and can't type) Lost most of my Harvard post. Again, if I didn't MY experience was 25+ years ago and I worked in the opposite direction in a bad job I was mishired for. Outside of RU sports or attending shows when I have money I'm not much of a drinker/social bunny (actually my degenerate NB based accounting Prof qualified his recommendation that my drinking abilities didn't match those in the classroom).

Thanks for the good words though Plum. For 20 years I was the small guy at the gym so I can handle. In fact several in R crew regularly laughs at many posters/moderators/past banning at every tailgate ;>). I think some here will be happier than I when I'm back '9 to 5".

I recommend not moving with your son in the first place. He'll probably want his freedom. Might just strengthen your relationship to live apart.

Just goofing around. I expected this to be advice for you when I opened, and I started reading it from that perspective. For a split-second even thought, 'why is guy moving based on his son's job', before realizing you were obviously seeking advice on his behalf. So I went with it. I was only halfway through my first cup o' coffee, though, so probably not my best effort.

Anyway, good luck to your son. Sounds like he has a nice job in what should prove a pretty fun area for a young kid to live. Is it his first job?

Don't know King of Prussia well, but will agree with the poster above who mentioned Manayunk - great place to hang in your early/mid twenties, assuming that's his age range.

First- sorry about your mom...

Next- wild guess but do you find it strange that people are usually walking while you are having a conversation with them?

I lived in Manayunk in the mid 2000's for three years after college. It is a great place to be for someone right out college. It felt a lot like college except you were making money. Could walk to bars, restaurants, and had easy access to center city. After a few years though your son will be ready to move on. Also, even though it is only 12 miles to King of Prussia, the commute would probably not be too much fun. Probably 30-45 minutes each way most days.

Conshohocken would be much more convenient location wise and would still be a fun place for a young person to live. I think the area has gained a lot more bars/restaurants since I left and I know quite a few people who still live there.

My daughter works for Lockheed in KOP and lives in Conshohocken. Seems like there are plenty of good bars/restaurants in that area. And the Conshohocken Beer Company makes a great double IPA - Island in the Sun. Gotta try it.

I still live in the area and I agree with everything gents said above.

Another consideration is that even though Manayunk is perfect for someone right out of school, by living there your son would get hit with the city wage tax. The tax impacts anyone that works or lives in Philadelphia. It's an extra 3.9% out of his paycheck. Most of the people that live in Manayunk work in the city so they get hit either way. In your son's case Conshohoken or KOP may be a better fit just to avoid that tax.

If traffic is a concern, I'd live as close as possible to Lockheed because the traffic is not going to be good there. There are apts close by. Conshohocken ("Conshe" to the locals) and Manayunk may have a younger vibe, but living in either place is negated by the four-lane parking lot known as the Schuylkill expwy unless he can find some backroads to get to Lockheed. All the major roads there 422, 202 are bad at rush hour. He might want to consider Phoenixville, which is past Valley Forge and has upgraded its downtown in the past few years, including a craft whiskey bar/shop and Sly Fox and Iron Hill Brewery to name a few places, if that's his thing. The apartments are older there, but Route 23 shouldn't be as bad as the other roads.

Try Lansdale, a town with many new trendy apts, restaurants, and SEPTA station. Not a bad ride to KOP.

I just relocated to nearby Souderton, PA from Brick,NJ and like the area more than I thought I would except the,no ocean part.
