In case you're in Europe or heading there this week, it gon' be hot! Temps will likely reach the low 90s as far north as the UK with temps over 100F in large parts of Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and several other countries in Western and Central Europe. This is not unprecedented, but it's tough to take after a couple of earlier heat waves the past month or so and significant drought in some of these countries, which could significantly impact some crops. We might even get a modest heat wave around these parts starting on Tuesday.

More frequent extreme heat waves are expected from anthropogenic global warming, but outcomes like disappearing glaciers and sea level rises (almost a foot since 1880 and another foot of rise is expected by 2050) are more obvious impacts from global warming (and extremely unlikely to be due to something else), relative to the increases in global air and sea temperatures. This is especially true in Europe, where we're seeing many European glaciers melting, with up to half of the glaciers in the Alps expected to be completely gone by 2050 at current melting rates (link below). In addition, a recent glacier collapse in the Italian Alps killed 10 hikers and such collapses are likely to become more frequent, under such strong melting conditions.

Long before there was one human being walking on this planet Antarctica was a tropical rain forest. And guess what, I don’t think the dinosaurs sat around and blamed themselves for global warming.
You know Antarctica was further north then right.

For most of the past 100 million years, the south pole was a tropical paradise, it transpires. "It was a green beautiful place," said Prof Jane Francis, of Leeds University's School of Earth and Environment. "Lots of furry mammals including possums and beavers lived there [citation omitted],

Fifty-five million years ago, the North Pole had a panoramic beauty of the tropics! I am not quoting these lines from any fiction. The ice-clad pole was an ice-free zone then! Tropical temperatures used to prevail there [citation omitted].

Again, as far as I know, this was not due to humans. LOL!!

Went hiking in Hacklebarney state park yesterday. Lots of glacier created beauty in that park. It must have been really cold at one time. The earth is old - unfortunately many people today don't want to think in those terms - including many scientists who gladly accept government funding to think in years and ignore the true history of the planet - fire away.

Love the hot weather. Hotter the better . Weather has had cyclical changes for thousands of years and all the current proposed climate initiatives would take several hundred years to make even a small difference . I’m waiting for Kerry and other elites to shun flying on private jets . As far as glaciers melting , seas rising and coastal cities being underwater it still appears climate activists and the more affluent people are still building mansions on those coastal floodplains. Just a reminder to the science nerds. We’ll all be long gone by then as in looooong gone.

Climate change in the past was over geological time, typically at least thousands of years and often much more than that, while what we're seeing now is over maybe 100-200 years - not even in the same ballpark.

It's your prerogative to not care about future generations, but some of us do - and the vast, vast majority of humanity lives at elevations that would be hugely impacted in the worst case scenarios of global warming involving most of the planet's ice that currently sits on land melting.

Don't need to go to Europe. Hot as f right here in the US.

Heard it hit 105 today but gonna cool down to an even 100 next few days. Looks like it might drop to a breezy 98 by next weekend.

No glaciers to worry about but def droughts and wildfires.

Not sure why people don’t get this simple fact. They choose to believe what fits their narrative and biases. But in this case our planet and our kids generation is at stake. The 98% of the scientists are in the governments pocket is comical. Yeah all the US, European, Chinese, Russian, Israel, Etc etc scientists are choosing a position that will cost trillions of dollars and all the governments in the world, democratic and authoritarian are going along or even pushing it forward. Not sure how people get so twisted up like this.

How long until the US faces famine due to crop failure? 15 years? 25?

So you’re saying the earth doesn’t always act the same as it did millions of years ago?

Again, what we do in the US has relatively very little if anything to do with global climate change, however, if you want to clean up the atmosphere, lakes, rivers, eliminate acid rain, all very noteworthy goals, you would need to start with Russia, India, and of course the elephant in the room, China. If those three countries had the same level of pollutant output as the US per capita you would solve most of the world's bio problems. I would recommend all of those who are so religious about this subject board a plane to China and see if you can rally the Chinese around your cause. I am sure the Chinese government will be very receptive to your ideas.

So I guess you just state we have nothing to do with it and all the data goes away? Then you cite an easily accessible data point that is clearly wrong. Look it up! Lastly, it’s clear you don’t know anything about China. Not a big fan of the current government but they are getting behind co2 reduction bigly. You know the place with the current largest EV car producer and a place where they produce the majority of the worlds solar panels. This is all readily accessible info from multiple sources.

This isn’t about future generations 4-5 hundred years from now . We all care… some just love to make it appear they are the one’s who care more. It’s an over-hyped viewpoint being used as a political issue. As I said before when the elitists conform then maybe we take it more seriously. It doesn’t matter what we do today, tomorrow or 200 years from now. And why ? If the two largest polluters and abusers on this earth don’t adhere to the same standards ( China -India) then the goal is unreachable. The world as you or I know it is more likely to be extinct from nuclear war or the next Krakatoa . You yourself love to book a vacation “ on the beach “ or did I miss the point. This has been known for years that sea levels rise, glaciers melt and civilizations are dissolved by Mother Nature. Maybe the Greta’s of the world should admonish those real climate abusers on the other side of the world.

Most don’t deny it. The difference is whether, we, as humans we have any control over it
It’s pretty simple science. We produce in our daily lives through various sources. There has been a measurable increase over the last 100 years that is beyond what is normal from pure natural evolutionary changes and the atmosphere only dissipates so much. So the level increases. Do we know with absolute 100% certainty? No but all of the facts line up and it makes sense. The implications of not doing anything is irresponsible for our kids and future generations. It is within our capabilities to do something about it if we all got on the same page. There have been strides in the country and elsewhere but the lack of policy and a cohesive framework to address and do efficiently is holding our ability back. This is driven by extremes on both sides of the aisle.

Going forward, if we ALL can keep politicians out of this thread, there is a much better chance the thread remains here. Or this will go to the political board.
Climate change is not just a part of “ science” , it’s also a political statement being overused by some. Yes , there is climate change and part of that is reasoning is there are too many people on this earth. That is exactly why the thread should have been placed on the Political board. It will be called by some as unintentional but educational in scope. Why was it allowed in the first place ? Don’t chastise poster’s opinions if it was allowed in the first place. It is a sports board everyone understands that. Differences of opinions is what should have been expected.

Please stop, enough Chinese propaganda, the facts are undeniable.

In 2021, China began building 33 gigawatts of coal-based power generation, according to the Helsinki-based Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). That is the most new coal-fired power capacity China has undertaken since 2016 and, says CREA, three times more than the rest of the world combined [citation omitted].

Saying stop the China propaganda? Now that is like calling the kettle black. If it wasn’t for propaganda China would be obsolete..

Facts don’t have to be political.
