OT: A's could be moving

But that funding is an investment into the community, isn't it?
I'll let you know if the enclosed upscale Battery next to Truist Stadium(Braves) in Smyrna, GA is a good community investment. Around the old Ted, homeowners could charge for parking, people were selling water bottles and team chochkis outside the stadium. But, hey, if you can afford to go to a ball game, you don't want those dirty people interfering with your stadium experience. Amiright? 🙄

Sports teams are no different than companies or ppl. They move where they’re treated best . They’re leaving crappy deep blue states run by “progressives” for states that are business friendly & growing in population. NJ...yeah right! Portland, Or... yeah right! There’s rumors that the Orioles will leave for Nashville once their lease is up
Portland has horrific leadership and a rough homeless problem right now. 10-15 years ago Portland was one of the nicest cities in the country and its only knock was real estate prices starting to climb and too much rain/cloudiness. Long term it will flesh out the current nonsense.

A domed stadium in Las Vegas will give them year round NFL and MLB sports that fuels their casino and tourism business. A’s will be a big draw in LV, like the Raiders.
Vegas As makes sense…hope they are as smart as the raiders

screw it .. I am all in, bring them to NJ !!! population is enough. Call them the Pork Roll Egg and Cheesers !!!!

With the zillion teams that have played at The Meadowlands, surprised nobody ever went with New Jersey Meadowlanders.

Oakland sure as **** won’t…so they stand a better chance…
That's not an answer. We all know Oakland is out. Once MLB sends out a press release that Oakland has the green light to look elsewhere Oakland was done. The question is who's next. Many on here are saying Vegas but does Vegas want to spend another $2 billion on another stadium?

U.S. News analyzed the 150 most populous metro areas to find the best places to live. To make the top of the list, a place had to have good value, be a desirable place to live, have a strong job market and a high quality of life. For more information on how we rank,
Portland ranked 9th.
As far as the homeless population, Portland does have more than their share of homeless living there.
Las Vegas is ranked in the top ten for homeless population,
Guess that City's leadership should be considered horrible.
But yet Vegas secured the Raiders despite the homeless problem and horrific leadership problem that caused it.

Talking points can make anything look worse than it is, or better than it really is.
Just need an audience that won't look at the whole picture and only look at the part you exaggerated about and you painted it in a bad light knowing most won't investigat what you said, just accept the whole picture is one of faded glory.

Some of the biggest cities without a Major League Baseball Team are San Antonio, Indianapolis, Portland Oregon, Sacramento, and Charlotte. Wonder if San Antonio or Sacramento are considered in Houston’s or San Francisco’s territory.

Thank god I don't know what the definition of facetious is!

A mlb team will move to NJ when S2 star gets sucked into the black hole. It zoomed past the BH in May of 2018 so there’s your odds
Actually the odds are zero. Between the NY teams and Phillies the entire state rights are spoken for.

Wrong.

In the AL East they would sellout all games vs N.Y. and Boston. They would also do well vs Bmore, and intra league vs phila and mets.
So filling up games with other teams' fans is your big, winning idea?

Even more terrible than before.

I would fill them with any fan over not filling them.

I also think philly would support the As. Philly market has 5 million people. My 80 yr old barber still has As pics on the wall. He tells me the, "The Phillies were nothing, they were never nuffin. The As were the team."

Ps. When the Mets and Phillies have down years they both market to each other's fans. They would rather sell to their own fans but nobody turns down cash.

Yes. I saw Rickey Henderson play there!

Same here. Not many people did though. If you saw the article I posted the average attendance at Jersey City games was 428!!!!
Before WWII (when he was a young teenager) my Dad worked the stands of Roosevelt Stadium selling “Peanuts, popcorn, crackerjack, scorecard!” during Jersey City Giants games.

He was so small they had to stuff his uniform hat with the Jersey Journal and roll his sleeves and pants.

No mlb owner is moving his team to Portland after all the violence there over the past year. Not happening. Vegas, Charlotte, Nashville, San Antonio - these would be candidate cities at the top of the heap.
So by this logic the blazers and timbers should be gone soon too. 2 franchises that are absolutely beloved by their residents. Baseball would crush in Portland. Not sure if the city would contribute too much, although they did just put in 3 million for the Timbers 50 million expansion of Providence Park(IMHO one of the best sporting venues in the country, an old converted baseball field with intimate sight lines).

This.
The Dome concept should have been part of development of the Vegas Raider Stadium. That ship has sailed since this was also configured as a football stadium.
No way folks are going to Summer baseball games in Vegas with temperatures in the 100’s from June through September.

Does Portland even have a high level minor league team anymore?
—I wonder if it will be much longer until MLB gives the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, owned by a New Jerseyan, the green light to move too. There have been a dozen stadium proposals and still no shovels in the ground. Might make sense to just move up the road to Orlando.

I actually get this. 🤓 On TV last night, One of the space shows(they are really all the same show with the same scientists, just different music) on the Science channel was discussing how objects can avoid being sucked into a black hole. One method was speed.

OK, I went off topic here. I should ask the mods for an Astronomy/Science Fiction page.

One of the issues with Florida teams is that the people who live there are from somewhere else and are fans of their hometown teams. For the Marlins, the Yankees, Mets and Red Sox are big draws, but unless the team is winning, they don't draw. The same in Tampa, although you can add Chicago there. The population of Orlando is heavily transient. I can't see a team surviving there.

Vegas is such a different city compared to the others on the expansion list with the tourists, gamblers, and other visitors, it may be able to get away with building a domed MLB stadium and make their money back. We all figure the Raiders shouldn’t have any problems getting fans to their games this season. But who knew the NHL would be as successful there that they have been?

IMO the Vegas A’s should do well, esp when those Yankee, Red Sox, Cubs, Cardinal fans show up on their Vegas trip.

How about SLC? Is it too small of a market? Maybe it could support a baseball team in addition to the Jazz in basketball. Apparently that metro/region is growing tremendously right now.

SLC is a larger DMA than a number of existing MLB cities and Vegas. Jazz has always been a big draw and one of the loudest arenas out there - palpable energy during many games.

Weather's near perfect for most of the season - sunny and dry, rarely ever a full day of rain. Temps top 100 in July/Aug sometimes, but nothing like the extremes of Vegas or Phoenix. And none of the humidity of Eastern cities.

I believe the AAA Bees draw pretty well, but I don't follow them closely. LA Angel affiliate, Mike Trout played there briefly.

I don't see it happening over some of the others, but could work well.

Politico. Ha. Good one

If you don’t want to believe that site, the NY Post has an article with these quotes in it

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Monday that his state had secured a $75.7 billion — yes, billion — budget surplus

California is running a $75 billion surplus,” Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.)

later in article this:
The jaw-dropping surplus is largely due to taxes paid by rich Californians who benefitted from a booming stock market. State officials had feared a $50 billion budget deficit as pandemic-induced closures and restrictions pushed the state unemployment rate as high as 16 percent in April 2020 (it had dropped to 8.3 percent as of March of this year).

Unbearable on this board sometimes.
This board definitely has a number of people who complain constantly about the same things and bash New Jersey constantly. They're what's known as toxic people, spreading their negativity to everyone around them but rarely if ever positivity. My father was like that. In life you have to get away from people like that. Unfortunately the internet has allowed toxic people to spread their negativity through social media without other people even realizing it.

Brg, couldn’t agree more about staying away from negative people. I will also include negative and depressing outside influences. This July will be five years since my Mom died, three weeks after getting a clean bill of health. It finally hit me how life is short and you never know when it is your last day. I made a conscious effort right there. I have not read a newspaper, magazine, or watched TV news since that day. The only things I really follow are sports and once in a while weather. The only reason I hear about corona is from one sister who is semi obsessed with it due to health concerns with her husband. I do not follow current events or politics at all. I see people frothing at the mouth about all kinds of things and I am so glad I have not exposed myself to whatever they are going on about. What is even better is that when people try to drag you into one side of something or another, I just tell them I have no interest and I either change the subject or walk away. Life is a lot better. I don’t know what ever happened to people saying no comment, we will have to agree to disagree, you are entitled to your own opinion or just walking away. One sunset is worth more than a lifetime of media consumption.

In my opinion, the internet is what happened to "no comment". Everyone thinks their opinion matters and that others need to hear it. Social media just proliferated this to a point that it is unbearable. In the good old days, the internet was just for porn.
