OT: Bruce Pearl

What damage did Bruce Pearl do at Auburn?

According to the court docs two players/players' families allegedly took money from an agent, organized by Chuck Person, to sign with that agent/financial adviser once they declared for the NBA Draft.

Pearl's name isn't in the docs. No "Coach-X" reference like there was for Louisville or Miami.

Russ, you are going to give Pearl a free pass on this? Pearl hired Person and made him associate head coach. Even if Pearl was completely unaware of Person's illegal behavior (unlikely in my opinion) he still bears significant responsibility for hiring Person not to mention being the head of the program.

With Pearl's questionable background (how many coaches have been hit w/ show-cause penalties?) I don't think it is a stretch to suggest Pearl has damaged Auburn. Having said that, Auburn deserves no sympathy as they should have known exactly what they were hiring with Pearl.

Short answer: For now, yes.

Longer answer: Until there is some evidence or an admission that Bruce Pearl, or any coach for that matter, did something wrong I will ask what did they do

Pearl did not want to hire Perrson, he was forced on him as a condition of taking the job.

More coaches have received a show-cause penalty then you probably are aware of. I know of one coach who received a show-cause penalty and didn't even lose his job. He continued to coach at the school where there were violations. By the time this particular coach was replaced his show cause had expired.

Bruce Pearl's most serious violations were lying to the NCAA and failing to furnish full and complete information relevant to the investigation. Dumb decision on his part. Just dumb.

Pearl's recruiting violations were impermissible phone calls. A rule that was so difficult to enforce, not to mention pretty useless, that the NCAA changed it to unlimited calls & texts to HS juniors & seniors. He also violated a rule by entertaining a kid on an unofficial visit at his home. That was just dumb.

Despite all of that heading just told the truth to the NCAA and his university he would probably still be the head coach of Tennessee and never would have received a show-cause penalty.

Don't get me wrong he's no saint, no Division 1 college coach is, but until there's some evidence that he did something wrong, or he admits to doing something wrong, I think the question I asked in my previous post is a fair one.

Pearl broke a rule that the NCAA decided was so stupid they got rid of it.

Jim Calhoun did something so shady in recruiting Rudy Gay that the NCAA eventually made a rule against it.

Russ, makes sense. If Person was forced on Pearl then Auburn certainly should not blame Pearl if Person was indeed a lone-actor.

Unfortunately for Pearl, his history of lying to the NCAA will haunt him and make it difficult to give him the benefit of doubt.

Has Pearl done anything worse than what North Carolina Athletics had in place for years? Both Pearl and the Tarheels have been thumbing their noses at the NCAA for years. Both deserve this year's Jerry Tarkanian Award.

I agree with Russ-----until charged and proven guilty Pearl is innocent.

Ditto Sean Miller at Arizona

You really mean to say Pearl is not guilty of anything in this case so far. Describing Pearl as “innocent” is the wrong choice of word. He has a history. I have never heard another coach come to Pearl’s defense. Says volumes. His roster building has always raised eyebrows. Pearl has missed some postgame handshakes in his career.

For the lazy . . . can you summarize in 3 sentences or less?
UConn paid $25k to schedule a game against the Beltway Ballers, an AAU team that consisted of Gay's former teammates. In return Gay committed to UConn.

Yes all this nonsense with paying players was solely vested with the asst coaches. Pitino, Pearl, Milller had no clue, they are the real victims in all of this. LOL

I thought he was busted for expense report (several) violation?
I'm not familiar with that if it happened.

Btw, Auburn sold out of season tickets before October 1. I have no idea how good they will be without Wiley or Purifoy, but someone told me they will still be better than last season when they won 18 games.

yeah, I don't see that anywhere so I must have him mixed up with somebody else..my bad.

Bruce Pearl was the model for the David S. Pumpkins character on SNL.

Given the OP's statement that Pearl had simply "damaged" Auburn not unlike previous institutions where he worked, Irish's standard of "charged and proven guilty" is ludicrous. We are not judges nor prosecutors. We are not even Auburn deciding to terminate w/ cause. We are simply a bunch of guys on the internet talking about our opinions. While I don't think it is unreasonable for you to have an opinion that Bruce Pearl is not a bad guy and has not shamed/damaged Auburn in any way, to formulate that opinion based on the fact that he has not been charged and found guilty is silly. The FBI is not responsible for investigating NCAA rules and it now appears that not even the NCAA is responsible for investigating/prosecuting its own rules. As LongIsland says above, we are left to our common sense. But alas, as Mark Twain once said; "common sense ain't so common".

I know you think that is funny and think every head coach knows everything that is going on in their programs. In covering this sport, I've seen up close the variety of of things that the head coach of a HM basketball program has to keep up on. I don't know how some of them do it with what little staff they have. For example, I travel around the state of Florida attending workouts and practices of teams. I've yet to have a head coach be able to tell me what time their practice starts. Whenever I text one about practice start times, they either refer me to their Ops Director or their Associate Head Coach.

Naturally, I asked one of the Ops guys how his boss doesn't know what time practice starts. His answer: "Head Coaches have so much going on that sometimes if it is not right in front of them they just don't know." He went on to tell me how he reminds his boss a few times each day what time practice is.

We all know how this is going to end up with Bruce Pearl being fired. Only a matter of time.

Best of Luck,

Bruce Pearl can coach. Sagarin has Auburn at #25. 23-4 on the season. In the SEC, rated higher than the Big Ten.

@rutcor UConn paid $25,000 to schedule a game against the Beltway Ballers AAU team.

It wasn't against the rules at the time, but it was so dirty the NCAA adopted a new scheduling rule preventing this going forward.
