OT Cheese Steak sandwiches in Central Jersey

Reading this thread has me missing NJ and craving a cheese steak. West of the Mississippi, the closest thing to a cheese steak is McDonald's steak and egg breakfast sandwich. Ugh!

Definitely not true for the entire West. I've had better cheesesteaks here than I have in NJ.

It's really amazing and frustrating that the rest of the country outside of philly, nj, & NYC can't get the right Italian rolls for a good sandwich.

Here in New England all the rolls are soft like wonder bread. Ugh

It's the water. There's a place in LA (forget exactly where) that had water from Brooklyn shipped in, monthly, to make proper bagels.

My general rule of thumb is to avoid anything outside of the NJ, Phila area called a "Philly Cheesesteak". Because it usually isn't. I don't even look for one here in the Atlanta area, because I know it's pointless. (can't get good pastrami or corned beef, either)

Unless you're place gets bread shipped in from this part of the country then I say "not a chance."

Do I sniff a cheesesteak off?

Cheesesteaks have become a big thing over the past few years, have a couple of cheesesteak places around that specialize in it, some that do nothing but. They experiment with different styles and toppings, just like burgers.

Good bread is not pizza, btw; the tri-state area doesn't own a monopoly on that.

Just come to Philly and go to John's Roast Pork. Get a cheesesteak and a roast pork sandwich and call it a day.

Gonna have to try that pork one - didn't it win some kind of sandwich competition on food network couple years ago?

Like the daily double plan - pork sandwich to stay, cheesesteak to go. A night rowdier than Philly sports fans in my stomach

Maybe. Whatever they've won, they've deserved. Sandwiches are legit.

Now about Cheesesteaks...

Cheez Whiz is not real cheese so it doesn't effect people with lactose intolerance.

Just wanted to throw that out there.

I used to love Garden Steak with their crazy cheesesteaks but they closed down, sad day in New Brunswick. To add insult a vegan place open where they were located.

this is basically spot on, I dont know why people argue against this map

You know who needs to see this map? The NJSIAA, as they have teams in Monmouth teams in North Jersey brackets and some Middlesex teams in South Jersey. Based on enrollment but it just looks stupid.

Vegas is spot on here. I mentioned John's a few pages ago. The problem is which one to order and the answer is to order both, if you're by yourself and eat as much as you can. Better answer is to go with a friend and order one of each and share. That's what my son and I have done. Although both of us are still slightly bigger on cheesesteaks, so usually we'll just go to Jim's and get cheesesteaks.

Exit 12 is too far north. 10 maybe.
No part of Middlesex County could ever be considered North Jersey because "I don't know for a fact, I just know it's true".

My even simpler guide is that North Jersey begins when you start smelling the Elizabeth refineries.

So much misinformation and disinformation in this thread. A true classic for this board.

I have to agree with this. I used to spend a lot of time in Atlanta and could never find good French or Italian bread. A transplanted New Yorker told me the locals wouldn't buy bread with a hard crust because they thought it was stale. They gave it the old "Charmin" squeeze and expected it to be soft. Their loss...
