OT: Commuting to Jersey City (Newport)

Anyone on here commute to JC ?? What are my options ? I tried the NJT Raritan Valley line train to NPS to the PATH but found that a little much given the three seats (1 NJT and 2 PATH). So on Monday I'm going to park at my brother's house in South Amboy and take the 6:40 directly (one seat) to Hoboken. I hear it's a 15 minute or so walk from there plus there's the light rail if it's raining. Is driving an option at all ?

Driving isn't actually that bad, just get off at 14c, not down by the tunnel.

The walk from Hoboken is quick and easy and cold as balls in the winter.

Coming from CNJ, Piscataway area. What are your parking options in Newport ? How much daily ?

Cold as Balls is an understatement for that walk.

Swimming it might be warmer than walking it in February. lol

There are a lot of lots, you can park at the mall or several decks in Newport and the surrounding area. I don't know how much commuter parking costs. Likely $150-$200 a month.

A lot also depends on you hours as far as how painful it can be.

You could also drive to Harrison and take the Path to Exchange, then either walk over (similar to Hoboken) or take the light rail.

You could also take the Path to Exchange from the Newark giving you one less transfer.

The JC drive is a nightmare whether you are taking 280 or turnpike. What time do you get to work where the traffic isn't bad?

Taking 280 seems to indicate you're coming from the other direction. From the North is way worse than south and west.

There's only one direct from Dunellen -- 5.24a -- too early for me. And there's no direct trains coming back. Most of the RVL trains require two transfers (one in NPS and another in Secaucus.).

JC/Hoboken from the south isn't terrible, but you need to be approaching 14c before 0715. Between 0715 and 0730 and you're rolling the dice. After 0730 and you are FUBARed.

Driving it is doable, but is very schedule dependent.

And as Mooby indicated, don't ever, any under circumstance, use 14B as your primary exit. EVER. That's a suicide mission.

Drive and park at Newport Center Mall for $22/day, would be my choice. Otherwise take light rail from Hoboken. Finally, you can consider parking in Harrison and taking the Path from there.

Yes, they do. You can also get off a few exits early and park by the Liberty Science center and take the LR from there.

I commute from Central Jersey to Harborside in JC. When I drive I park in Liberty State Park and then take the light rail, which also goes to Hoboken. Not sure about the concern with 14B, though 14C is iffy.

A generation ago, I commuted to NYC and parked at Newport and took PATH into the city. Get off at Grand Street ramp, hook a right onto Xtopher Columbus, a left onto Marin and you are there. I had a monthly parking in the Mall deck. Walked across the street to Pavonia/Newport. I would head back to CNJ on the Newark Bay Xtension or the Skyway (not a option right now). I would usually beat the NJTransit NE corridor trains home. Went up that way to go into the city for Xmas last year and it still seems doable.

From my experience, when you do a long commute, the fewer modes of transport you use and connections you have, the quicker the commute is.

I work in Newport and live in Bergen County. Easiest commute and I love it. Bergen line to Hoboken. One stop on the light rail. There in 1 hour door to door. Been doing this for over 10 years. I hate driving a car to work now.

Not a clue. It's not the Science Center lot, it is a commuter lot across the street.

It's a pretty huge lot too. I brought my kids to LSC one day during the summer and was surprised by how much real estate they dedicated to that lot.
