OT: George Elder dead at 101

He was MLB's oldest living player and its oldest surviving combat veteran- at Iwo Jima and other horrors in the Pacific.

To give you an idea of how old he was,his big brother played for Knute Rockne,scoring on a 100 yard interception return vs Army at Yankee Stadium in 1929,giving ND the national championship.

He got to the big leagues with the Browns in 1949,hitting .250,then left the game to become a deputy sheriff.

With his death,seldom used early 1950's Yankee lefty Art Schallock-another Iwo Jima vet-takes the torch to carry on.
