OT: If anyone is interested? Warrior won last night

One pick away from Knicks
Knicks won last few games of year when Wilson Chandler got extended PT and played great.
Drafted Hill from Arizona ??

Knicks get Curry , Lebron probably makes “the decision” to come to NY with curry and tries to beat MJ winning 4 straight titles
Curry wouldn't have been anywhere near as great as he is if the Knicks drafted him.

Tatum and Brown are very good. Not quite elite yet. Hopefully they’ll get there.
Both obtained with Brooklyn Nets draft picks acquired in the absymal Pierce/Garnett trade.

I wonder if in a few years, the Houston Rockets will be contenders for a similar reason.

Warriors - definition of "built not bought"? Yikes. Not exactly great wording there.
Should have left "bought" out of it and come up with another word.

Trivia time: What team had the highest payroll in the NBA this past year? Golden State Warriors
$178m (cap was only $122m).
This mean a $170m luxury tax payment for a total "payroll" of $346m.

How did the Warriors acquire their 2nd best player in the Finals - Andrew Wiggins? Trade
How many of those "8" players actually played in the Finals?
Having 3 top draft picks in the last 2 years helps boost the "drafted players" stat.

Curry, Klay, Draymond, Looney - key contributors and great draft picks over the years.
The other 4 were all drafted in the last 3 years.
Wiseman - hurt and didn't play at all
Kuminga/Moody - end of the bench played minimal minutes
Poole - was an adequate bench guy in the playoffs

So yes, technically 8 guys on roster. However only 5 actually played in the playoffs.
Being about to pay Curry ($45m), Wiggins (BOUGHT for $31m), Klay ($37m) and Draymond ($24m) is what really won them the championship.

Moral of the story - build through the draft but then buy the players to stick around

Free agency is part of all major sports. However, the fact remains that the Warriors have largely been built on drafted players. Having Steph, Klay and Draymond together for so long + a cadre of young players (Looney, Poole, Kuminga, Moody, Toscano-Anderson) is unique in the NBA free agent era.

Plus, the Warriors are willing to pay top money to be a contender is great - why criticize this? Would you rather be a Suns' fan at this point? Their owner (under investigation) is notoriously cheap. If I'm a fan, I would be severely pissed to see Ayton go for a crappy sign and trade deal.

Back to rosters, consider the makeup of some recent champs:

2021 Bucks - Only one important player was drafted by the team (Giannis). Maybe you can add in DiVincenzo.
2020 Lakers - Literally no one
2019 Raptors - Sikiam and Van Vleet

Heat - Miami has done a great job of developing their own players. Maybe the best in the NBA, beside the Warriors and Celtics. Robinson and Halsem, plus Herro and Adebayo.
Celtics - Tatum, Brown, Both Williams, Smart and Pritchard. My only hesitation with the Celtics is they are young. Let's see if they hang onto their core for a few more years.

The Warriors are in the unique position of being able to reload when the core of their dynasty eventually retires. They have 3 first round picks on their bench (Kaminga, Moody, and Wiseman), 1 lottery pick that has been reborn (Wiggins), and a potential All--Star in the making (Poole). They could be good for a long time if things work out right. It should be pointed out that Wiggins was vilified as an underachiever and no other team wanted him.

I wanted to add one point. I hope the NBA adds a mechanism to the salary cap where "homegrown" players don't count as much against the luxury tax. There should be a way to reward teams for developing talent over signing free agents.
