OT: Just realized that yesterday, 06/17/22 was 80 years since I was graduated from Newark South Side

Yes, she is. Will be 94 years young on 6/30. Maiden name is Raczka. Her family had a corner store on the corner of Darcy and Wall in the Ironbound section. She ran on the track team.

They had Track back then? Did they run in sandals?

Not sure if it was an official "team" or what. May be difficult at this point to get to the bottom of it, unless @beaced was the hammer throwing champion of Newark in his high school days?
From those days on, honoring his championship performance, for all NJ HS Hammer throwing competition a the Beaced Hammer is used
The hammer has a copper handle with gold engravings and a large, white marble head with more details in gold and the head of Beaced carved at its the center.

Not saying it wasn't official. Sort of meant as a compliment as a lot of schools in NJ didn't have women's teams until the 70s.

So who is your favorite all time RU player and is he the best. You’ve seen thousands. And many more years of good 😊 health

Hat's off to Beaced! 🎩 One of the greats on the board.👑

Mom grew up in Newark and moved to Jersey Shore in HS. Her Dad helped install the original eagle sign on the roof of the Budweiser brewery.

She took us to her old neighborhood once. Not quite how she remembered it. We didn't stick around very long to reminisce.😟

If you were in the South Side Class of '42, then you were just a year behind Mayor Ed Koch. Do you recall him from those days, @beaced ?

Loved that School. On the SE corner of Johnson and Alpine.Steep hill with a traffic light at the bottom of Elizaberh Ave.Used to go sled riding when it had snowed. If t he light was green we would try to cross Elizabeth,if red we would turn up into a snow bank to stop.Got there one time and it was almost deserted. Turns out that one kid missed the light and got killed. None of us were too bright back then.

Tried sledding down Bigelow… HELL NAH!!!!! Didn’t even make it to Elizabeth Ave because of the Milford Ave traffic.

Used to be in great shape because football coaches used to make us either sprint up that hill on Bigelow or even made us spring around the block in 3 minute laps ( probably more time or less time- memory is screwed). But yeah. Todays players are blessed to not having to run up the hill, let alone sprint around the block.
