Dave Portnoy makes $3 million offer to Michigan to land top quarterback: ‘I will sign them’

t’s “Blue Chips” coming to life.

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy said he will spend up to $3 million annually to help the Michigan football team land a premier quarterback now that players can be paid under NIL rules.

The No. 12 Wolverines (3-1) have received shaky play from their quarterbacks this year in their attempt to repeat as national champions.

“Michigan — I will be the quarterback guy,” Portnoy said Thursday. “You just say, ‘Dave, you go,’ — I’ll talk to (coach) Sherrone (Moore). ‘Who do you guys want? Who’s in there? Give me a group, I’ll go get them. I will sign them, million, $2 million, whatever it is.'”

I saw that. It’s a crazy world out here.

I’m trying to wrap my head around two thought processes

1. Do people like this just have so much money that this is like their way of owning a part of a sports team , without being a billionaire . So it’s just money towards their own ego, pride, entertainment and “power”?
I mean my tiny donations towards RU are essentially the same thing. I hope it helps the team win. My hundreds or thousands in donations I guess is the equivalent of his net worth to mine ??? Except I get a little gift from RU while he probably gets full access and treated like part of the team.

2. It’s crazy college players are essentially bribed in public now. None of this feels like it’s going to end well. It’s gotta be temporary.. right ?

I heard the original show he mentioned it on. They talked it through and in the end the idea was for the player to make this out of Barstool sponsorships. This money wouldn’t be coming directly out of his pockets.

I noticed on Sunday night football last week, several players naming both colleges they played for during introductions. A sign of the times for sure.

Of course Portnoy is no dummy, he will run it through a corporation or LLC and probably get a tax benefit. BTW this has been going on for a long time. The Blue Bloods have been paying players for decades and the NCAA has known about it. Bags of cash, cars, valuables, etc. have been used by the best programs to lure talent since the 1950's and 1960's. Back then it was illegal or against NCAA rules but I am certain the league knew that this was going on and turned a blind eye.

That’s often how it is. Even if the headline number is true, which many times it isn’t, it can be misleading.

Was listening to a Mandel/Feldman pod and Feldman was like a lot of times you see things sort of “in kind” as opposed to in cash.

Like being able to stay in a 750K house for 4 months or use of 100K car for 4 months but not the actual cash or possession of said thing. It’s not 750k or 100K in cash or even owning the things,l. It’s just allowed use of something.

But there was a limit. See SMU

A quick web-search suggests he has a net worth around $100M. And who knows how reasonably liquid that net worth might be.

But as others have stated, it's unlikely to be coming out of his pocket.

Gross

So then how much are we paying them?
Not our NIL it came from other avenues. When Cliff went t o Alabama that showed you are crappy NIL situation. It’s been discussed a lot that Pike wanted a Center but we had no money for one. Cliff here would have meant Final 4.

Good for Michigan…those that can, do…kids getting paid…isn’t that what people wanted? 😉 there is no world where a Vandy competes with Bama, or a Maryland competes with Ohio state…even in the power 2, there is stratification…haves and check collectors…

Despicable!

Now of he said "I'll pay $3m a year for a coach" - there aren't enough rose we should throw at his feet.

Or "I'll pay $3m to the Athletic Department to pay for travel and administrators and food and recruiting flight and gameday operators everyone hates".

Just about any other expense involved with college athletics - nothing but accolades and shows his true dedication as a fan.

But offer to have that money go directly to players on the field???
The horror!!

yes and now players having loyalty to where they commit has a price and that price might not be enough to keep the player for his whole college career.
The NIL has changed the face of college sports , pay to play is now part of it .
Once it was backroom deals that would bite a program in the butt if a program got caught paying a player to commit . Now it's part of the recruiting process and the highest bidder gets the prize .

You do realize coaches, ADs, etc. are employees of the universities…it’s their job…these are supposed to be student athletes and most are also getting a free education, room/board, food. Way different my friend.

It’s not the school paying the player. It’s whoever signs the player to an NIL deal paying the player. So the free education, room and board, food, etc. are entirely irrelevant. Not sure why people keep bringing it up. Jealousy, I guess.

In both cases, schools paying coaches, or organizations paying players, the similarity is that there is a business relationship. Not way different at all.

I think what people wanted is a level playing field for all people seeking to profit off their talents and skills.

Prior to the NIL decision, players were unfairly prevented from earning any of revenue being generated from their efforts. Meanwhile, all other students, who aren’t student athletes, are free to earn as much money as they wish doing whatever they wish. Those students get a free education too. But they can also run a business or be a highly-paid influencer.

Why should non-athletes have the right to earn money, but not athletes?

Setting up major corruption. Maybe they will enroll Daniel Jones and pay him to play ball with the kids.

Good point - why even have eligibility requirements at this point? Why have transfer rules? The NCAA is a joke. Eventually big money will step in, buy the team rights, lease the stadiums, and fund the programs, with universities simply licensing their trademarks back to the teams.
