OT:LET'S GO METS

Bryce Harper: "We saw all three of their horses twice in a matter of two weeks. They haven’t seen Scherzer since Day 1."

And if I recall, the Mets won that game. This kid is starting to annoy me. I hope during the next WAS series Harvey sends a little love note towards Harper's right earhole.

Was at the game last night. Three bombs got the crowd going big time.

Not only are the Mets playing well but they are probably one of the most interesting teams in all of baseball. Can't wait for Matz to get back so the Colon gets bumped from the rotation.

Was at the game last night with my 4yo. The atmosphere was electric. Sat in 106...all three Mets homers came near us. It was a great night.
Our section harassed Harper the whole game...he was starting to get pissed. He needs to grow up.

When Jayson Werth played for the Phillies, the folks on his side were chanting "Jayson Worthless". He feigned a yawn and went back to work. Appropriate response. I thought he looks like a garden gnome, and sure enough the Nats have him as a garden gnome.

The gnome was a really popular giveaway, and some people went to last year's playoff games with gnome hats.

I hope he doesn't. If you want to get Harper hyper-focused, that's one way to do it.

Of the remaining games on the Mets' schedule, 40 are against teams with losing records and 17 are against teams with winning records. There is definitely a path to victory. That last 3 game series against the Nats will probably be for all the marbles.

The only problem with that theory is that the Mets, who have been terrible on the road all season, have 7 more away games than home games to finish out.
On the other hand, they can now put out a lineup of major league hitters so that should help both home and away.

Mets and Yankees fans will wake up tomorrow knowing their teams are in sole possession of 1st place. I don't know if Vegas had odds on that at the beginning of the season but the odds would have been huge of both in sole possession in August

Everybody has assumed that Cespedes is merely a rental for the remainder of the season; but I don't see why the Mets wouldn't make a run at him in the offseason and try to lock him up for a while.

It's a small sample in 2 games, but some have said he is a dog in the field. He has run down a few balls, and he has good range. He also showed hustle on scoring on that wild pitch last night. Of course, you should expect these things from an elite player being paid was he is getting. Let's see if the other stuff people said about him is true about not being coachable before locking him up.

The Mets booth, homers but not afraid to speak their minds, have repeatedly said that Cespedes is an "excellent" outfielder. He has already shown great range and everyone agrees that he has a gun. My one observation in two games is that he is rather nonchalant catching fly balls, which always annoys me. Is it possible that this "butcher" in the field reputation is overstated?

And if he continues to hit hit laser beams off the fence, I don't care what he does in the field.

"I don't give a crap what the Mets are doing. Or Dodgers or Giants or Texas or anybody," Harper told D.C. media after the Nats lost last night. :joy:

Sole possession of first place with Matz, Wright and Cuddyer most likely back before September. Things are definitely looking up!

I can't recall if it was on MLB Network or ESPN but one of two I was watching last night mentioned two of Cespedes' former coaches with Detroit said that he was a joy to coach and a very good teammate.

Unfortunately due to the funky nature of the original contract he first signed with Oakland there seems to be a minimal chance that Cespedes will be with the Mets in 16

I've heard comments on his contract so I did a search for more information. There is a clause that states his team cannot extend him a qualifying offer, which means the Mets won't get a draft pick from whoever he signs with next season. That doesn't mean the Mets cannot resign him, just that more teams will be tempted to bid for his services. There are a few other big names coming on the outfield free agent market, mainly Justin Upton, Alex Gordon, and Jason Heyward. If things work out well with Cespedes and the Mets this season, we can make a run at resigning him.

If he winds up signing with the Yankees, it'll be interesting to see the reaction of those who have been criticizing him as a bad clubhouse guy.

And if they don't come to a new deal in the 5 days after the World Series ends, they can't officially sign him until May 15th of next year. It will be very difficult, which is why they treated him as a true rental when deciding on what to give up for him.

Harper and the Nats feeling a little heat.[roll]

I won't disagree with that, but that's what Harper is supposed to say, except that including Texas was kind of odd.

By the way, you had another classic from a Nats player after last night's game: Ryan Zimmerman said that he'd take being a game out of first at the beginning of August any time.

The one part that really stinks is that the Mets can't offer him a 1 yr qualifying offer- which would entitle them to a compensatory 2nd-3rd round pick- when he's turn them down. They have to sign him to a multi-year deal within those 5 days.

Cespedes in an interview today said he wants to be a Mets for a long time. That's a lot of pressure on the Mets to get the contract signed quickly right after the end of the season.

Just a perfect pick-up right now IMO. Enjoy the ride, and let's hopefully finally get this done.

My only concern is why this kid been on 4 teams in three years? Is there off field issues or clubhouse issues?

Billy Bean said it was a mistake to trade him now that he's had a chance to look back. He was moved because Billy and his crazy stats to value ratio, so they got value for him in through prospects. Small market teams think like that. Boston was wrong from the get go. He was a fish out of water there. He didn't like it. It wasn't going to work out no matter what. Detroit moved him because they believe they're out of the race, so why not get prospects for a guy who is likely to leave at the end of the season. Kelly Johnson said he was the ultimate teammate. What was reported in the media was false.

That all maybe true. But it as just likely that they are excuses to keep his value up before a trade. I don't know the facts but it's odd a talented player has been on so many teams so early. And his Billy Beans numbers are great so you know that is a bunch of crap

Boston would trade Porcello back for Cespedes in a millisecond. And you can read Ken Rosenthal and see that Detroit actually traded him in order to make it easier to sign him in the offseason, which is their goal.

Why did they trade him in the first place. He was exactly what they neede

It doesn't even matter if there's a valid answer. You have already made your mind up about Cespedes.

This makes sense.

I haven't made up my mind. Great pick up by the Mets.
Why don't you explain why he has been on 4 teams in 3 years!

I did based off what I read, yet you called it excuses. I basically said this discussion is over because neither one of us will convince the other of why Cespedes is here with the Mets.

I'm a big fan of this kid. Just can't understand why he gets traded so much at a young age. It is a red flag

reason 1:
The Tigers figure to be extra-motivated to deal Cespedes, as he’s ineligible to receive a qualifying offer this winter and thus can’t even bring back a draft pick as compensation if he isn’t moved today.

reason 2:
Boston got rid of Cespedes because he's not a yes man like most of the Red Sox players. Cespedes clashed with the front office. Current Met teammate Kelly Johnson was his teammate in Boston and said Cespedes was a great teammate and Cespedes issues weren't with the players.

reason 3:
As I said about Billy Bean relies on stats/value to team to make decisions for him. According to Bean at the time Cespedes salary didn't equal his true value based on his stats. Oakland has a habit of dumping MLB talent for prospects they can control, develop for less money. recently Bean said Cespedes was one of the few trades he might have jumped the gun with his trade.

Four teams...

- The Mets are happy to have him. Let's pull them from the "concern" list.

- As I mentioned before, Detroit traded him precisely because it makes it easier for them to bring him back next year. Pull them off the list.

- The As traded him to Boston because their offense was very strong and they had a chance to bring in a top of the rotation starter in Lester, which they were desperate for.

- Don't know why Boston chose Porcello over him. Probably the same mindset that Oakland had prior, but they completely misfired on their target. And now they regret it.

If you're still concerned I don't know what to tell you.

As I said I love watching this kid. But don't you find it odd that a kid of this talent keeps getting traded? Has this ever happened before?

When there's perfectly logical explanations for 2 of the 3 moves? No, I don't find that odd.
