What a bad play by Murphy. Your only chance is to get the out at first and then bring the infield in and hope for a ground ball, popup or K. He just opened the door to a big inning.
Cubby = A man who knows high level baseball. What do you expect from Murphy? Somehow he's always in the lineup because he suppose to be able to hit. Hitting .280 isn't the same as a .325, otherwise I can't see sacrificing defense for average offense. Even then his defense trumps any good he does on offense. He's no good at his main position (2B), so why are the Mets running Murphy out to 3B and 1B sometimes. Parnell and Murphy are more problems for the Mets than answers. Glad Murphy is a free agent at the end of the year.
Mets just can't outlast that Pirates bullpen with their own. . . . .

Playing in the infield, every run you let in defensively you need to drive in two to make up for it...outside of a first basemen hitting 50 homeruns and diving in 145 runs it rarely happens.
If a manager had the choice a player striking out with two outs and the bases loaded, or making an error on defense with the bases loaded, he'd choose the offensive lapse every time.
I hear you Doug but at the same time my concern would be that if the Mets scuffle against Morton and the guy who pitched Friday night; how will they fare against Cole or Liriano no matter how good of starting pitching they get. Still can't count on shutouts. Haven't beaten the Bucs now in 5 tries. See what they do today against another top notch guy in Jeff Locke. Yes I'm being sarcastic with that last remark.
Parnell is just bad luck. Not his fault on the double play. Murphy or Tejada should have had it. Down 2-1 now.
It was Tejada's ball. Murphy was backing up all the way.Parnell is just bad luck. Not his fault on the double play. Murphy or Tejada should have had it. Down 2-1 now.
The rain delay hurt us again. Harvey would have pitched the 7th if it wasn't for the rain.Just have to hope this disaster of a weekend doesn't lead into a prolonged funk that could be the beginning of a losing streak as a road trip begins. But when you lose even a Harvey vs. Locke matchup it's bad.
Are you putting Parnell on trial? It WAS Parnell's fault, at least in terms of contributory negligence. If the base is uncovered, you don't throw the ball. Wait a fraction of a second and make sure of one.
Anyone know why Mets relievers can't pitch 3 days in a row but the Pirates, Caminero, had no problem? I assume it's more TC foolishness.
I know he had a rough day but I was expecting Torres to face the bottom of the order in the seventh. Then Clippard in 8th and Familia in the 9th. It would have been three straight days for all 3. I view this week differently because we have the rare two off days. TC doesn't strike me as a thinking man's manager. It may be his nonsensical gibberish during the post game press conferences. He just doesn't inspire confidence.I know that this board's hatred of Terry Collins can be blinding, but please think this through:
You are not using Clippard in the seventh inning of a tie game.
You are not using Familia in the seventh inning of a tie game.
You are not using Robles in the seventh inning of a tie game when he pitched three innings the night before. You may use him later if you have to, but not in the seventh.
That leaves O'Flaherty, Torres, Gilmartin, and Parnell. Name your poison.
Other than the two end-game stalwarts, Mets' bullpen has been decimated by Mejia suspension, by the injuries to Montero, Blevins, Goeddel, Carlyle, and Black, and by Alex Torres' unexpected poor performance. None of that is Collins' fault.
Murphy won't return to the Mets next year. Someone will offer him 6-7 million a year but it won't be NY.
