OT: Major New Jersey Heatwave Discussion And Observation Thread

Looking at all of NJ, my grade would be a B+, while looking at CNJ my grade would be a D - of course my grading is based on an A being getting at least half of the forecast area within forecast ranges (about 0.1-0.5" generally), knowing that doing better than that in this type of setup is nearly impossible. It's all about setting realistic expectations. If this had been a snow event and 1-5" of snow was forecast statewide (the equivalent of 0.1-0.5" of rain, roughly), my grade would have been a D for NJ and an F for CNJ - vs. realistic expectations.

Was anything severe.. tired of them hyping tornadoes wind hail and torrential rain

Hamilton-Trenton still dry af. Next chance of rain Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Lawn is a writeoff until October. Thankfully I got my drip irrigation system installed in my raised beds.

Got a short burst of very heavy rain in Newark, but it lasted only 10 minutes max....then dry as a bone all day again. I wish this rain could help the heat break, but while it isn't as hot as the weekend it's still pretty brutal here.

Yup, seems like the last 5 times they said it was gonna rain/thunderstorm for us we got nothing. My lawn is crying. Nutsedge is growing like 1" per day it seems. Been running sprinklers seems to do barely anything.

A severe t-storm watch was issued for the general favorable conditions in the watch area for 1" hail and/or 58 mph wind gusts, as per the standard text below from the NWS - it doesn't mean everyone is going to see a severe t-storm at all though, just that conditions are favorable for them in the watch are. Tornadoes weren't mentioned at all in the watch or in the AFD, although potential for downpours was mentioned. I don't know how many places experienced severe weather, but there were several severe t-storm warnings during the afternoon and evening and these are only issued when radar (or spotters) indicates ongoing severe weather. Also, NJ has already had 3 tornadoes this year (vs. 2 per year on avg), so it doesn't seem like there's been tornado hype to me.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch: This is issued by the National Weather Service when conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. A severe thunderstorm by definition is a thunderstorm that produces one inch hail or larger in diameter and/or winds equal or exceed 58 miles an hour. The size of the watch can vary depending on the weather situation. They are usually issued for a duration of 4 to 8 hours. They are normally issued well in advance of the actual occurrence of severe weather. During the watch, people should review severe thunderstorm safety rules and be prepared to move a place of safety if threatening weather approaches.

Thursday looks brutal! Maybe the worst day this summer
Looks like a warm start to the weekend up here in FAAAA.....landers. Low to mid 90's on Thursday and Friday. the heat wave last week was not too bad. Pretty good summer so far.

Not sure it could be worse than Sunday the 24th. Up by me 97 with a dew point of 74.
It was bad on the 24th. 2100 bike riders from Philly to AC. First half to Hammonton was great. Second half the worst but in the Philadelphia area this will be worse in heat and humidity.

If the forecast holds. Remember on 7/23 and 7/24, the humidity ended up being moderately lower than forecast as drier air aloft mixed down, decreasing boundary layer (at the ground) humidity, such that, while temps were around 100F both days, dewpoints were in the low 60s on 7/23 and the low to mid-60s on 7/24 vs. up near the 70F dewpoints forecast. The forecast for Thursday has temps in the upper 90s and dewpoints close to 70F, and while Friday's forecast is 2-3F cooler, humidity is forecast to be higher, with dewpoints in the low 70s, which is oppressive. And Saturday's forecast is for highs only around 90F, but even more humid, such that dewpoints will still be in the low 70s, which sucks for any activities - have a disc golf tourney at Ocean County Park all day on Saturday and I'm hoping for clouds and some showers, lol.

Looks like in a week you'll be having some nice mornings and evenings with warm but comfortable daytime highs. Woudl be nice if all of August looked like that for Jersey. Fingers crossed! Good for football practices too.

Run before dawn before humidity rises and sun starts to bake.
Relative humidity generally peaks before sunrise, very often close/at 100%, which is why we often see early morning dew (or frost when it's cold) and stays high until the sun is well up and the atmosphere heats up, causing the relative humidity to decrease, as the same amount of moisture in a warmer atmosphere means the relative humidity becomes lower - this is all pretty clear in the hourly weather graphic below. Obviously, it's going to feel a lot hotter as the temp goes up, so the advice is sound - just thought it was worth clarifying the issue.

Today was not bad at all. Played golf from 3-7:30 in Somerset County. It was actually quite pleasant with a nice breeze.

Newark had its driest July ever this year with only 0.55" of rain - while Central Park, just 11 miles away, had 4.5" of rain (a bit above normal). Many areas in the NE and parts of NJ are now in stage 1 drought, while many others are close to it, as per the graphic below.

Even if they are - Summer. It gets hot.
I’m a meteorologist, I get it, but averages matter when calling something hotter than, or colder than. Here in SA 106 days of 90 and 54 days of 100, so far. Even here that’s hot (beyond the tiresome and mostly uninformed it’s “just summer” mantra). Last year, 0 days over 100. 2022 will rank up there with 1980 and 2011 as top 5 in the city’s history and could move into the hottest year in recorded history slot (here) if the pattern remains as stuck as it has (August is the hottest month on average).

That hurts. LOL.

today will be the most oppressive day of this currrent heatwave which may or may not end tomorrow.

Oooh weather porn…I mean stats!! 🥳

Yesterday in SA we had our first rain since Jun 28 (a juicy 0.14”) and third day in a row of not making it to 100…amazing what a little rain can do the very next morning…it is cool (or warm?) to view the idea of heat waves from a regional perspective.

According to the NWS the avg number of 90 degree days in NB is 22 and in Newark 36…have those been surpassed?
Philadelphia is already in the mid 30s of days of 90 and above, well past the record. Add in today, tomorrow and now Thursday as the front has slowed down so another one to add to the list. It was 82 degrees at 6am with a dew point of 77.

All my grass is dead except for patches where we are draining the kids' inflatable pool.

77…that’s juicy! For context the dew point in San Juan PR is 72 (as of when I checked) 🥵

I doubt it. As opposed to the last 4 weeks June was below average, 0 90 degree days for the month. Of course there are 4 more weeks to surpass that total.

We hit 80 degrees in Ocean City yesterday! This morning i took a few conference calls out on the deck and had to throw a sweatshirt on with the cold breeze blowing off the ocean. water temps back in the 60s it seems
In OC now as well, the nighttime breeze this past week has really sucked. Water temp on the North end of the island was 61.9 yesterday!

yea, its crazy that water temps have been so cold all summer. Saturday was one of the few exceptions. I would prefer the heat over cold water temps because I have been in the water for about 20 minutes this entire summer. I'm usually up there at least 5-6 days a week. I'm still sitting on my deck and depending on which way the breeze shifts it goes from cold to hot and hot to cold.

The heat wave (temps of 90f or above) will be over for most folks tomorrow (especially along/N of 78) and definitely on Thursday, as we finally get a strong cold front through, sweeping out the heat and humidity for at least through Monday. Temps will finally be back to normal or even a little below normal and humidity will be comfortable. Could be some good storms tonight and tomorrow afternoon/evening with some heavy downpours in some locations.

Hillsborough has been at 90°+ on all but 3 days since July 12th. Congratulations, lol.

Yesterday's water temp was not just cold, it was damn cold. We were at the beach in the late afternoon thru early evening. Definitely needed the heated pool around dinner time. Wasn't like that for a week or so. Today seems much more normal (not sure of the water temp yet).
