OT: Major winter storm 3/20-21?

Here in Clifton, on my backyard wooden deck, the total is probably about 11 inches.....out front, in the driveway, it was closer to 6 inches

the surface makes a difference.

These should be close to final numbers...

Here in Clifton, on my backyard wooden deck, the total is probably about 11 inches.....out front, in the driveway, it was closer to 6 inches

the surface makes a difference.
It certainly does, especially in late March, during the day, with rates barely above the melting rate. I was getting around 0.5" per hour on the grass/deck/car during much of the afternoon and not getting much at all on the driveway or street. This actually corroborates, nicely, my estimated melting rate (from years of observations) of 3/8-1/2" per hour on asphalt during the day in March.

Then, when rates got heavier later in the afternoon (1" per hour by 4-5 pm), we got snow accumulating easily on the asphalt from then through the end of the storm. I had about 7" total on the asphalt vs. 11.25" on the grass/board - very close to what you got - perhaps you should be a trained spotter!

Got 8 here on the deck in Somerset which matches the amount above. Probably only 3 inches total on the driveway.

Yardville...I measured 9 inches on my patio set before I went to bed around 10:30. It was still snowing, and continued to snow until about 5 am. There was 2 inches of fresh snow on the sidewalk and front steps, but still only measured 9 inches on the patio set, probably due to compaction.

I only eye-balled it, but I guess my guess was close.... I have a decent size snow blower, and it did well with 90% of what I wanted to snow-blow..... could not use it on the lip of my driveway because the snow was too wet there, kept clogging...guess I need a more powerful machine for these March storms that have higher water content.

So let me get this straight, Edison got 7", which is about what I'd say I got, but you somehow managed to get 11"+ in Metuchen ? Nobody is reporting those numbers anywhere in Middlesex County except you.

Middlesex County
Old Bridge: 8.5 inches
Spotswood: 7.5 inches
East Brunswick: 7.5 inches
Hopelawn: 7.5 inches
Edison: 7.2 inches
South Plainfield: 6.8 inches
South River: 6.2 inches
Fords: 6.0 inches
Perth Amboy: 6.0 inches
Woodbridge: 5.8 inches
South Old Bridge: 5.0 inches
Plainsboro: 4.5 inches
Cranbury: 4.1 inches
Highland Park: 4.0 inches
Sayreville: 3.5 inches

Most people only care about the total snow at the end of the storm. He actually counts each individual snowflake and adds them together for his total.

Final tally for me was 8.5 inches, unless there was some compaction before I measured at 8:30 this morning.

Here's a shot of this snow plus the remains of the last storm:

The roads were pretty good and there weren't a lot of cars so even though it took a while to dig out, I got to work on time-- ish..

If anyone is in the Manasquan area I know where you can get a really good deal on milk, bread, and eggs. You just need to dig out the guy's driveway:smiley:

It was still snowing at about 2 AM. I would say we ended up with 12 to 13 inches in Tinton Falls. Lots of trees bent over just waiting to snap.

Anybody know if the next storm approaching on Sunday will have significant Snow ???

In Brick, i've had no power at my house since 12AM and my baseball cage collapsed and is destroyed. Wonderful Spring Snow Storm.

Lee Goldberg was saying last night he thinks it will stay south of us. But just like with all these things caveat that they will have to keep a watch on it. I think a high pressure system from Canada was suppose to hold it south IIRC.

When on Sunday? South of us? I'll be driving back from AC...... Is AC "south of us"?

Here in Howell got into the 12" to 13" range. Some real good melting going on out there probably down to 9" now. Shoveled paths to barns you can now see grass. One more day of this sun and temps and the majority of it will be gone.

Yes twice, once late last night then again this morning. Nothing but black pavement. We usually don't get this type of treatment down here off of Kent Rd. I was very surprised, they did a good job. Maybe a councilman moved to my area? Lot's of digging this morning to get to the animals, I'm beat. Front loader is stuck on a job this was all manual today. @HeavenUniv. but I'm still not going to Roman's for pizza.:)

Well he didn't say specifically what south of "us" meant, but I took it to mean south of all of us as in the viewing area for ABC7. But again he left that caveat, as they all do for each threat, we'll keep a watch on it.

10-day forecast has us scraping 60 degrees ONCE.

Didn't get a single pleasant day in March this year (two or three in February though).
Yea quite a change, I actually didn't think winter was too bad until this last hurrah of March. Good handful of days even 60s and even low 70s.

Forester, good to see you post . Having attended "Cook" in the late 60's? 70s I surprised you remember much of anything. Hope to see you again at our tailgate this coming year. Hope to someday get a tour of some of the land you managed. As per our music thread do you remember any bands that played on campus or at Rutgers stadium during the years you attended?[/QUOT

I'm surprised as well! I do remember a Laura Nyro concert I attended. Great talent. And Bonnie Raitt, who later showed up at the Corner Tavern with Freebo, her bass player. Concerts were at the Barn. I actually spent more time at the Fillmore East for concerts than at RU.

Was going to go shovel my mother-in-law's driveway after work in North Edison. She is on the side of the street that gets good sunlight. Just found out the entire driveway has already melted.
Good riddance and thank you to this awful March snow for disappearing faster than it came.

Any ideas/formulas about snow melting. I am thinking 45 and sunny would be at least 3'' per day
Snow melt depends on many factors: sunshine, temps, humidity, and the mass (not depth) of the frozen precip. For "typical" 10" snow per 1" liquid ratio snowfall, with days in the 40s and nights at or below 32F, one could expect to melt 3-4" per day from grass. What we had on 3/7 had twice the density or about 5" of snow per 1" of liquid, so it took about twice as long to melt per inch of depth of frozen precip.

For asphalt with similar temps as above, as soon as some of the asphalt is exposed and is warmed by the sun, the rest will melt much faster, by heat conduction underneath the snow from the warmed asphalt, especially if it's in the sun. So one way you can "cheat" is to simply shovel a couple of thin lines down the driveway and then wait a day and 6" or more will usually melt if it's in the sun.

Out west in the mountains, which are usually very arid, the primary mechanis of snow removal can be sublimation where the solid directly vaporizes (like dry ice - frozen CO2), as this is greatly enhanced by low RHs.

Well he didn't say specifically what south of "us" meant, but I took it to mean south of all of us as in the viewing area for ABC7. But again he left that caveat, as they all do for each threat, we'll keep a watch on it.

The current "blocking" pattern, which has been primarily responsible for the cold/snowy pattern remains in place, meaning there wil be more theats through at least early April. Beyond then, it's really hard to get enough cold air for snow along the coastal plain. The latest 6" snowfall in Philly is 9" on 4/9/17 and for NYC is 4/13/1875 with 10". But the Poconos/Catskills have had siginificat snowstorms into early May.

So for this Sunday, every model currently has that system going from the Midwest towards about Norfolk with some rain/snow. It would need to correct about 250 miles north with the track to impact CNJ/NNJ, which is unlikely, but nowhere near unprecedented. The storm after that on 3/31 looks like all rain with a track to our west, but a track to our west with blocking in place is difficult to believe, so this one needs to be watched, as it has snow as nearby as the Poconos/Catskills. And a few more later than that are way too far out.

Ahem, I beg your pardon, but not everyone thought TR to Sandy Hook would be a regional min ☺️

I wasn't specific enough. The coast, in general, was supposed to get less than the I-95 corridor, as per the guy you linked and the NWS, which actually had quite similar forecasts. I just went too far north with my Sandy Hook comments - the NWS map had the lower amounts south of about Belmar (same spot on the NJTV map). So, it was a big surprise for most coastal residents, especially south of Toms River (<8" on both maps), to get more than anyone else in NJ. Same type of thing happened on Long Island, where up to 20" fell. Amazing what perfect timing and 2-4" per hour snowbands can do.

ok, I think these are final - hopefully we'll get a map soon. On the whole, despite my reservations the morning of the storm and despite the nattering nabobs of negativism on this board, the NWS Philly and NYC office forecasts were pretty damn good, overall. Of course, there were exceptions, like LI and the NJ Shore, south of about AP, which were supposed to get less snow; same for much of eastern PA and SWNJ, both of which overperformed; and the Hudson Valley, which got less than expected. Most interesting observation to me was how much Somerset County underformed - just didn' get into the good bands - or maybe bac has powers we don't know about.

In Brick, i've had no power at my house since 12AM and my baseball cage collapsed and is destroyed. Wonderful Spring Snow Storm.

Last night a tree fell on the power line and caught fire down the street from someone I know so he's been without power since. He lives right off the eastern end of Mantoloking Rd.

Edit: woke up and there was 1/4" of pixie dust on my car and driveway from after I went to sleep, so my final tally is 11.5". Interestingly, someone else reported 11.5" from Metuchen and there are plenty of tallies in Middlesex County, near me in that range.

We're at 11.25" as of 12:45 am, after my 3rd and final shovel, and still 31F. Went from moderate to light, non-accumulating snow around 12:30 am, so unless we get some backbuilding, I think that's my final number, just short of my 12" prediction yesterday afternoon. Will be awake for another hour or so and will watch the radar and remeasure if needed. If not, wow, what an amazing freaking storm, especially for Spring! And we were a bit fortunate that the snow was a lot drier for the last 2/3 of the storm and winds were not too strong, such that power outages have been minimal.

Been a ton of fun tracking, watching, and discussing (and yes, even bickering lol) this event with all of you and, of course, being out in it to enjoy it - it never gets old, even though I do. And remember, try to measure the snowfall at the end of the storm not tomorrow morning, as there is always some compaction (but luckily no melting tonight, which will limit compaction a bit).

P.S. I'm sure most of you will be happy to hear that the weekend storm is looking to be about 200 miles S of the area and likely will not affect us - but it's far enough out it needs to be watched a bit.

Nice surprise for me. I woke up and there was 1/4" of pixie dust on my car and driveway from after I went to sleep, so my final tally is 11.5". Interestingly, someone else reported 11.5" from Metuchen and there are plenty of tallies in Middlesex County, near me (and even more) in that range.
