OT: Major winter storm 3/20-21?

We probably had 4 inches by early afternoon. At 33-34 degrees for most of the afternoon it appears the snowfall isn’t keeping up with the melting. Maybe added another 0.5-1 inch over the past few hours? I just pushed a few inches of slush away from the front door.

I think maybe 2-3 inches on the street even if it’s snows 12 Inches. The plow truck knew to come at 4:00. The snow has stopped for 1 hour.

Now it's 4.25" and 30F as of 4 pm, so 3/4" the last hour and the snow is falling moderately and it's clearly much drier now - not quite sure on ratios, as the flakes are smaller than some of the 1/2" size agglomerates we were getting. Some of the small flakes are shaped nicely (dendrites that would layer well), but some are more pellet like, indicating a mixture of growth regimes up there in our favorite place, the DGZ. Guessing we're probably 10:1, but if we could get more uniform drier dendrites, I think we'd get to 13-15:1. Streets completely covered now (not that busy, though).

Finally hit the magic 1 inch per hour rate, as we have legitimately heavy, heavy snow with <1/4 mile visibility under 35+ DBZ radar echo - this could be 2" per hour stuff. As of 5 pm we have 5.25" and it's 30F out there and pouring gloriously gorgeous dendrites, which I'm sure are at least 12-15:1, snow to liquid ratio (fluffy). Just took a walk around the neighborhood and it's simply beautiful out there. Roads completely snow covered now and with the sun very low in the sky now and the heaviest snow falling I imagine it's tough out on the roads right now at rush hour.

A good friend of mine married weather royalty, lol, the poster known as HM (Anthony Masiello). He tweets regularly and he has a very cool visible satellite loop on his site - see the link. He also reiterated what earthlight said a few hours ago, i.e., "you don't need me to tell you that things are escating now."

Barely measurable snow on the driveway.

Here in DC, everything was closed (not unreasonably, based on the predictions and how badly the area handles snow), but south of the city temps never really dropped below freezing, which limited actual accumulation and means that the streets are all clear right now. We also never got really heavy snow - definitely no 1" per hour. I probably could have gone into work instead of working from home. It looks to be largely done by now. Still, it was the biggest snow storm of the season.

You might be one of the only "isolated" locations in NJ at 1 inch per hour.

Steven DiMartino, meteorologist with NY NJ PA Weather, called the storm "a bust" — if you go by the NWS' forecast. DiMartino predicts 4 to 8 inches of snow, with some isolated spots seeing up to a foot. Winds are still going to be an issue, as is coastal flooding.
"I just don't see for the entire region — all of central New Jersey — to be over 12 inches," DiMartino said around 3 p.m. Wednesday. "Certainly not 18 inches."
In order for 12 to 18 inches of snow to collect, DiMartino said the snow needed to start coming down quicker, say, 3 inches per hour — immediately.
Is New Jersey close to seeing 3 inches of snowfall per hour?
"Nowhere close," DiMartino said. "The most I've seen so far is an inch per hour in isolated locations."
Those locations are to the west of Philadelphia, south of Allentown, and around Long Island, briefly, DiMartino said.
If the snowfall accelerates, DiMartino said it would happen between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Wednesday.
"If you look out your window between now and 8 p.m. and it's not a complete white-out, then the National Weather Service forecast is in trouble."

Going out to shovel the 1/2-1 inch of snow. The snow blower would be a waste. Stop snowing last 2 hrs or maybe a slight drizzle.

On CBS, the weatherman wouldn’t post the projected accumulation map so you know it’s a bust, he only quoted a few towns.

you need to come 15 miles west to Downingtown, we have 9-10" here

We're not going to get much more, here. The snowfall rate is barely exceeding the melt rate at this point and looking at the radar you can really see the energy transfer offshore and the snow starting to deteriorate through Pennsylvania.

We've established that Curran is a tard, calling for 2-4". Most in CNJ/NNJ will make it to 8" or more when it's all done. Lots more to come still.

Considering what we were hearing less than 24 hours ago 8" would be a good final outcome. I'll make you a deal...Metuchen can have all of Manasquan's snow. That way we'd both be happy. Don't take it personally. I appreciate what you do for the board but I hope this is the last time a thread like this is needed for a very long time.

fwiw the nams have about 4-5 inches more for most additional accumulation tonight
And that may put most in 8-12 territory total. This thing will wind up being close to what was predicted if you throw out some nutty model runs from yesterday.

Just got in from my first shovel and then a neighborhood Jebwalk. As of 6 pm we have 6.75", meaning it poured 1.5" in the last hour. Almost as heavy as the height of 3/7 for me, but not those huge, huge agglomerates that were 2-3" across. 30F still. Roads in bad shape now around town at least. With 4-5 hours more of the moderate to heavy stuff as per the radar and several pros and the NWS saying we're going to get even heavier stuff soon, I think 10" is now a given and 12" is very attainable...or maybe even more.

For people who think this is a bust, the heaviest stuff is just starting for most of CNJ/NNJ,/NYC, except far NW areas and 8-14" is still expected for most. See below.

Here's the latest from the NWS...

National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
453 PM EDT Wed Mar 21 2018

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 10 PM THIS EVENING/...
The storm is at its height now through about 10 PM and there
could be some 8 inch amounts in 4 hours for parts of coastal
New Jersey between now and 9 PM.

The forecast is pattern recognition and blending 12z/21
models/WPC/adjacent office considerations.

The STS is from 2PM to 8AM Thursday with this storm essentially
done from west to east between midnight and 5 am. So our STS
does not include all the snow that occurred prior to 2 PM. We
have many reports of 10+ inches now. The key big 4 climate
airports of PHL ILG ABE and ACY will probably end up with 8 to
12 inches of snow while isolated 18 inch amounts in NJ or e PA
(south of I80 this time) are not out of the question.

Regardless of snow amounts, SUBSTANTIAL impacts, including
power outages and additional tree damage, are likely this
evening due to heavy snow.

.SHORT TERM /10 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM THURSDAY/...
Snow ends from west to east between midnight and 5 AM with not
much clearing. Temps may rise several degrees after the snow
quits wet bulbing. IE...no strong cold outbreak to follow but
still below normal for this time of year.

Just went out and shoveled a second time in Howell. It’s coming down but certainly no white out. Easy to push off sidewalks and driveway. I’m ok with this. Wife has to take the newborn for a procedure in the morning so I’m perfectly content

Snow lightened up here in Hillsborough. I see maybe 2 inches on the road. I don't think we are gonna make 4 inches on the road.

Still a good 3-4 hours of good rates left

Deal, lol. Although you really want to pray hard for Sunday's system to stay to our south. Right now it's a significant snow/rain maker for much of VA, DE, and MD and may graze far SE NJ...unless the track moves NW towards us.

I notice that a couple of you say you've shoveled. This storm was expected to bring wet heavy snow that would be difficult to shovel; does that seem true? My snow guy is coming by in the morning, and I hope he isn't delayed by the difficulty of clearing snow.

And that may put most in 8-12 territory total. This thing will wind up being close to what was predicted if you throw out some nutty model runs from yesterday.

puts us in line with most mets on tv and other services but the Mt Holly really bought the Euro hook line and sinker from yesterday along with the nutty Nam outputs, the Euro was an embarrassment for this storm..did it have 30 inches for Virginia?

the initial stuff was wet, some stuff falling later was drier fluffier snow but still the temp is only 31, its not leafblower snow but it will not be cement like the last one but temps actually will rise maybe above freezing tonight

snow lightened up in somerset county recently with some subsidence but will pick up again. So for me it was just 3/4 inch rates the last hour. I would say not quite 2 on pavement and getting close to 5.5 on grass

again the 12-18 calls by Mt Holly are why people and some twitter mets are calling it a bust....while we should see between 6-12 for most of us when all is said and done and some isolated higher spots...and it wasnt even a 12-18 call..they literally had New Brunswick at 18 so if they see 9 or even 10 yeah thats a bust...we will see what happens. Still a good 3-4 hours of good rates left

I called them out for the 12-18" call (same thing for NWS-NYC, who kept the 12-18" call) - had no idea why they went that high, but at least they corrected it before the storm to 10-15", which is still probably a bit high for many but will verify for some, including me, I'm sure. I always thought 8-14" was a better call - probably 75% of folks who were in the 10-15" area will make 8-14", but I think quite a few folks won't make it past 8".

I think most people are concerned with accumulations on pavement rather than grass so when they put up 18 inches on a graphic for New Brunswick most people freak and are expect a top 20 snowstorm. I think guys like Goldberg were good..they went 6-10 and then expanded an area to 10-14. As it is the paved surfaces will likely be up to anywhere from 33% to 66% less than what is on the grass.

Seemed like they missed where the heaviest snows fell..and it seems like out in PA...models had that more in the 95 corridor than in PA counties like Lehigh, Montgomery, Berks, Bucks

Still snowing in New Providence.Probably at least 6 inches on the ground.
Very similar to the storm 2 weeks ago as it did not really start till afternoon. Started ti stick on roads about 2 PM but my driveway has been accumulating all day, I live near the high point in town and driveways on my street had snow covering them while those down the hill did not.
I still had quite a bit from past storms and doubt we will be rid of it on my property till early April.
This basically sucks.

I notice that a couple of you say you've shoveled. This storm was expected to bring wet heavy snow that would be difficult to shovel; does that seem true? My snow guy is coming by in the morning, and I hope he isn't delayed by the difficulty of clearing snow.
It was “heavy” but there’s wasn’t much of it. I only went out so I don’t kill my already bad back if we were to get a ton.
