This is true in New Jersey but the rest of the US? I guess it’s better than being homeless.

The number of young adults living with their parents hit at least an eight-decade high in July, as the pandemic’s disruption of jobs hit young generations particularly hard.

More than half of adults under 30 (52%), or 26.6 million, are living with one or both of their parents as of July, according to a study of Census data from Pew Research Center. That’s up from 47% in February and exceeds the previous high of 48% in 1940, according to Census data.

It’s also the highest recorded level from the Census dating back to 1900, but no data is available from the Great Depression, which likely was worse, according to Pew.

Saw an article a few years back about this. New Jersey was the highest percentage in the country at the time. Lowest percentages were in rural states, mostly in the West.

Isn’t this telling us the standard of living is moving downward for a segment of the population?

Perhaps temporarily. The 18-24 segment, where the change in the study was the largest, skews towards work in hospitality, including restaurants. And that segment will get the biggest boost from a vaccine, whether it's in October of 2020 or June of 2021.

Isn’t this telling us the standard of living is moving downward for a segment of the population, more difficult to make ends meet?
This is telling me that in the not too distant future some Bernie-like socialist, free shit for everyone type will be elected. Once this group moves into true positions of leadership, that’s when we are really screwed!

The Sweden-like fantasy of free healthcare will remain that...an unattainable fantasy. I mean the feds can’t even manage the small, <9M VA system without severe issues but apparently a national system for 330M+ is attainable in some fantasy island like scenario.

I believe people should have a choice until you can prove that even the people in DC are covered under the same plans we others are... examples not all people under Medicare rely solely on Medicare ... I don’t and haven’t since I retired ... my current plan gives us much more but we pay it out of pocket ... some do and most don’t ... I just want the CHOICE... as long as we can we will but if this future holds everyone in the same that is not a good thing... cause you know those in power will have their own system... I’d be more concerned with giving freebie healthcare to those non US citizens ...

So how does that relate to the fact that it's the youngest cohort that's the most severely affected, that their normal employment is in segments of the economy are most severely affected and will likely get the biggest boost once a vaccine hits the market?

did you see the recent arrests for rioting of white privileged children--sadly some are in their 30 s with jobs in high tech--when they do damage to others property they should be sued and thrown in jail

But sadly they won’t... they have had a tough life... like that lady in the San Fran Salon caught on video and then wants the owner to apologize to the leader.

Smart kids. Stay at home and save money

Have you seen what the private sector has done with healthcare? I can't even call my doctor and find out how much my yearly physically cost. Until doctors actually know how much procedures cost and not the current throw $hit against the wall and see how much sticks health care will never get fixed.

The average rent for a one bedroom in my county is $1700-2300. I was talking to a guy in Sherwin Williams store, and he said he has $65,000 in college debt, and has to live 50 miles away to afford a place. With college ripoff bubble, millennial subsidized stock market bubble, healthcare bubble, inflated car insurance etc (illegals cause accidents all over) its scary to be living on the line all the time. Its no wonder kids are in the streets really

I never have an issue... doctor’s don’t set the figure ... since they and the insurance company negotiate costs plus payouts on procedures , injections and yes physicals... all I have to do is contact my insurance company and I have numerous times... my yearly comprehensive check up is free... doctor waved my copay which is minimal... complete blood work , EKG, Urinalysis , blood occult, PSA , and yes every males favorite rectal prostrate fingere wave... I pay for insurance in addition to having Medicare but as I said previously that’s our CHOICE ... that is why 180 million also did before this pandemic... they wanted that right ...

How is it lazy? Having a full time job and living at home is one of the smartest things kids can do. They can pump money into their 401K's and save for a house instead of renting a place in hoboken for 3 grand a month.
Where did the “full time” job part get inserted? The OP stated kids between 18-25 living at home with mom n dad...maybe I was negligent to see that but... even still ... most normal young adults would prefer living on their own or roommate. It now has become the excuse “ they’re trying to save money. Many don’t contribute anything to the household even in doing what we old people termed household chores. If you are going to say a 25 year old after graduating college can’t afford a shared apartment that is sad... very troubling and unless some good reason parents need to wake up.

My son who is 28 lives in an apartment In Somerville with a roommate. I subsidize him by slipping him $60 each week. My daughter who is 26 and has a decent starting salary is moving to a studio apartment in Bloomfield next month. Her living space will be very limited. She’s a saver and could afford a much bigger space but chooses not to.

And the $ 60 is ok... many many many do the same but you show that you have developed two young adults who will succeed in life...My wife and I married at 21... first son at 22... went back to college to finish final year ... worked down the port full time... wife stayed home... rented our first apartment and struggled the first year... but we made it work and our two sons are very successful and appreciative of what we were able to give them beside a home , an education and a happy childhood but they also worked one post high school and one as a senior at Chi Chi’ s restaurant. If you allow them to think hey it’s tuff out there so we’ll let you slide that’s ok for a few months but after that... nope... time to move on with your life ... We also were able to do very well but our early married life was not a walk in the park ... now going on 50 years married we wouldn’t trade all the wealth for any of the bills, illness and deaths ... the same indoctrination we hear about carries over... this feeling of entitlement is abused and kids 18-25?today sometime act like 12-16 year olds of days gone by... Help them yes... coddle them no...Life isn’t fair for anyone...

Healthcare providers lose money on every Medicare patient they treat. That has always been the case, but they made it up charging a little bit more for patients with private insurance. Medicaid reimburses at half the rate of Medicare. The real issue came about with the massive expansion of Medicaid by Obama care. In order to keep the bill from failing due to sticker shock, they left the funding the same, leaving it to providers and private insurers to figure out how to close the funding gap. Providers that serve an unusually high proportion of Medicaid patients, like Hahnemann in Philly, can't bridge the gap and end up bankrupt.

And what county is that? Curious one , two bedroom and here is the answer if he has and I have a daughter in law with the same with a double masters in education ... is he in a field where his salary ( starting) was day 85 k per year? To allow the child to acquire such debt is the fault of guidance counselors, financial institutions , the college itself and the realization that 85-90% of the jobs will never be enough to pay off their loans... sorry but parents need to be more upfront and honest even with a very good student... maybe school x, y are way over priced...,maybe go to a school and live home not on campus... or even off campus... think about it we are all guilty of never wanting to say no to the child... plenty of schools are priced beyond the means ... parents want to be able to say... “ my son/ daughter is at ... and we pay ( which $$$$ and most don’t) pay this amount for room n board ...the loans will at the costs and then 10 years later... oh crap the bill is due...

Like I said... us personally pay for our insurance monthly ... if you think Medicare is the issue wait if we get someone elected who says everyone gets free this and that... are you paying for it ? No we don’t ... the only issue is if Washington DC elites have the same plan as Joe Dirt ... ok that’s great but the system no matter which will never be fixed either way.

Kids first priority should be to pay off their student loans, so living with parents helps. Plus rent is very expensive especially in our area.
But the kids don’t rutgersal ... we see this today” forgive our student debt” ... could it be done sure but then we can’t support every country and hotspot in the world... you know that won’t sit right in whomever is in charge.in DC
