OT: NASA Perseverance Rover Landing

My point is we were all savages throughout human history, fighting, conquering (whether by outright conflict, or subtle long term subversion). And while we'd like to think those days are over, things like ukraine happen.
Fair enough, we agree to an extent. But not all societies have been fervent invaders or colonizers throughout history either. Some are more inclined, others less so.

"It will separate the Indians from immediate contact with settlements of whites; free them from the power of the States; enable them to pursue happiness in their own way and under their own rude institutions; will retard the progress of decay, which is lessening their numbers, and perhaps cause them gradually, under the protection of the Government and through the influence of good counsels, to cast off their savage habits and become an interesting, civilized, and Christian community"

- Andrew Jackson
Ok, the one bigot president. He doesn't define a nation.

Vikings, Romans, Mongols.
Nice group.
In the end, the Vikings assimilated with the people of the lands they conquered, the Romans assimilated the people of conquered lands into their society (not on equal grounds, but still incorporated), the Mongols western kingdoms converted to Islam and assimilated with the people of those lands.

Not sure how you are comparing this with what happened in NA, but there were clearly both long and brutal struggles of all people's throughout the history of the world. The point should be less about cancelling the past and instead remembering it so that tomorrow and the days ahead can be better.

remembering includes examining with a critical eye. it means understanding why something happened, not "oh it happened, that's nice, can't change it now". without that critical examination, we are destined to repeat history. this period is the first time in our nation's young history where people are actually looking at the history with a critical eye.

When are we going to bring something back from Mars to Earth? That would be a major test.

The problem was.. the Cherokee (throughout the south were Andrew Jackson and friends wanted land for plantations) .. were already assimilating. They had taken England's side in the revolution but were already becoming christian and speaking english.. even wearing the same clothes.

What Jackson said was cover for what Jackson did.. and had also done to the Seminoles. His same move was repeated over and over by other administrations.

Yup, and him and the other racist democrats (Van Buren) and others were the primary culprits.

Is there one more prevalent than the other for the kids?

Not really -- once the question is asked. Most kids (I think) think about space exploration first, but when the topic of undersea exploration comes up, a lot seem to be for that, too. It's mainly a way to get kids to talk and get to know one another.

Great PBS Nova special on the Perseverance mission...as always top notch work by Nova...
