OT: New York Mets 2024-2025 Off Season Thread

The below post has been pasted from the in-season thread.
The run was fun, but now it’s done. Time to look ahead. To get us started, I offer my annual end-of-season roster analysis. It assesses the 40 players on the 40 man roster, plus the 6 on the 60 day IL. Here goes:
  1. UNDER CONTRACT FOR 2025 (6 players)
Edwin DIaz
Francisco Lindor
Starling Marte
Jeff McNeil
Brandon Nimmo
Kodai Senga

COMMENT: Much has been written about how much money is coming off the books. That is true, however, there’s still a shit-ton tied up in the six players named above. $127.6M to be exact. That’s more than the 2024 payrolls of 11 whole teams.

These six guys will almost certainly be a key component of the 2025 squad. Their contracts make them untradable unless Uncle Steve picks up a big chunk of the tab. The only two trade possibilities IMO are McNeil and Marte, in that order. Barring a trade, I can see McNeil being relegated to the Kelly Johnson role.

Note that technically, Sean Manaea is also under contract for 2025. However, he has an opt-out which he will surely exercise

2. CLUB OPTION (1 player); Phil Maton

COMMENT: Mets hold a $7.5M option on Maton. I think they have until 5 days after the end of the WS to exercise or decline it. The buyout is only $250K, so sunk cost is not an issue. My guess is that they will exercise it, but who knows.

3. ARBITRATION ELIGIBLE (8 players):

Paul Blackburn
Tylor Megill
David Peterson
Sean Reid-Foley
DJ Stewart
Tyrone Taylor
Luis Torrens
Alex Young

COMMENT: A historically strong organization would have a bunch of in-prime key guys in this group. The Mets are still building, and so this group is pretty barren. Peterson definitely gets tendered. Megill, Taylor, and Torrens probably do. Blackburn and Reid-Foley are maybes depending on health.

4. PRE-ARBITRATION (17 players)

Luisangel Acuna
Francisco Alvarez
Jose Azocar
Brett Baty
Huascar Brazoban
Jose Butto
Matt Gage
Reid Garrett
Grant Hartwig
Ronny Mauricio
Dedniel Nunez
Eric Orze
Alex Ramirez
Christian Scott
Mark VIentos
Danny Young
Tyler Zuber

COMMENT: Mixed bag. A couple of studs, a few prospects, a few role players, a few maybes, and a few DFA candidates. Note that the Mets best prospects (Sproat, Williams, Gilbert, Clifford, etc.) do not appear on this list as they do not yet have to be protected on the 40 man.

The overall meh-ness of this group reflects the meh-ness of the organization prior to the arrival of Stearns.

5. FREE AGENTS (14 players)

Pete Alonso
Harrison Bader
Jose Iglesias
Max Kranick
Joey Lucchesi
Sean Manaea
JD Martinez
Adam Ottavino
Jose Quintana
Brooks Raley
Luis Severino
Drew Smith
Ryne Stanek
Jesse Winker

COMMENT: Here is where it gets interesting. The big name of course is the name at the top of the list - Alonso. My guess is that the Mets have their sights set elsewhere and he walks. But who knows, Cohen may value his starpower.

Next we consider the three starting pitchers. I doubt that Stearns values any of them as highly as “his guy” - Corbin Burnes. We shall see.

Bader? Nah. Martinez? Nah. Ottavino? Nah. Winker? Maybe. Stanek? Hell yeah.

Smith and Raley both picked the wrong year to require TJS. Neither will be available until the latter portion of next year at the earliest. I suspect we have seen the last of them in orange and blue.

OMG, I forgot somebody! We thank Iglesias both for his play on the field, and his intangibles. My guess is that he signs a two year deal elsewhere, and becomes the second most beloved returning ex-Met since Wilmer Flores. Alonso, of course, being the first.

6. PROPOSED 26 MAN ROSTER AS OF RIGHT NOW

Here is my proposed 26 man opening day roster as of right now, selected solely from players who are currently under team control. This is not intended to be predictive. Rather, it is to point out the holes which will have to be filled, and will be filled.

STARTING LINEUP (excl DH) - 8

Vientos 1B
Acuna 2B
LIndor SS
Baty 3B
Nimmo LF
Taylor CF
Marte RF
Alvarez C

BENCH (incl DH) - 5

Torrens -C
Mauricio - IF
McNeil - IF-OF
Stewart - 1B-OF
Azocar - OF

COMMENT: Nothing wrong with this lineup that signing Soto and Alonzo wouldn’t cure. Alternatively, Adames and Santander. I would be very happy with two of the four. My guess is that we get one of the four, and two lesser names. My gut says that Soto is lost to the Dark Side.

STARTING PITCHING - 5

Senga
Peterson
Blackburn
Megill
Butto

RELIEF PITCHING - 8

Diaz
Maton
Nunez
Garrett
Reid-Foley
D. Young
A. Young
Brazoban

COMMENT: I’m penciling in Burnes at the top of the rotation. They will need two more, I’m guessing one of their own three free agents (preferably Manaea, but they may have to settle) and somebody else. Blackburn’s health is a question mark. Scott is out for the year. Sproat and Tidwell won’t be ready for Opening Day. Not sure Hamel or Vasil will ever be.

I have no clue how you go about strengthening the bullpen. Relief pitching is SO volatile. I am sure they will try. Any opening day bullpen projection is relatively meaningless anyway. They will churn through bullpen arms as they always do, in quest of finding a few keepers.

TL/DR: HOW MUCH IS UNCLE STEVE WILLING TO SPEND? ESPECIALLY AT A 110% TAX RATE?

All comments appreciated.

Key upcoming dates:

1) IMMEDIATELY AFTER WORLD SERIES ENDS:
  • Trade market opens. Teams may now again make trades.
  • Free agency begins. HOWEVER, teams have a five day window of exclusivity to re-sign their own free agents. In 2022. Mets re-signed Diaz in this window. Cohen obviously did not want Diaz to sniff free agency. and overpaid to make sure he didn't. Will Cohen feel the same way about Alonso? All signs point to no.
2) FIVE DAYS AFTER WORLD SERIES ENDS:
  • Free agent marketplace opens.
  • Deadline for exercising contractual options. Manaea has a player opt-out which he will surely exercise. Mets have a club option on Maton. Will they exercise it? My guess is yes, but who knows.
  • Deadline for issuing Qualifying Offers. Alonso will surely get one. Manaea? Not sure if he can, given his opt-out status. Not sure if he would anyway.
3) NOVEMBER 14:
  • Rule 5 Protection Deadline. Any rookies who are subject to the Rule 5 draft must be added to the 40 man roster by this date (otherwise they can be drafted). IMO Mets really don't have anyone whom they absolutely must add. Their top prospects aren't subject to Rule 5 for another year or so.
  • Qualifying Offer decisions due. Alonso will undoubtedly reject his offer. Manaea, if he gets one, probably will also.
4) NOVEMBER 17:
  • Arbitration Tender Deadline. Mets have eight arb eligibles, most notably Peterson. I think there will be a couple of non-tenders.
5) DECEMBER 10:
  • MLB Draft Lottery. A non-event for the Mets this year since they made the playoffs.
6) DECEMBER 11:
  • Rule 5 Draft. Usually not terribly significant but you never know.
7) JANUARY 15:
  • International Signing Period Opens: This IS significant! A very underrated factor in what separates good franchises from not so good.
  • Arbitration Agreement Deadline: The vast majority of arbitration eligible contracts are amicably settled by this date. If not, then the case must go to arbitration, which can be unpleasant. Arbitration hearings occur in late January - early February.
8) MID-FEBRUARY - REPORT TO SPRING TRAINING!

The time will go fast!

The New York Mets are expected to sign several players in the 2025 international signing period, including:

  • Elian Peña
A 16-year-old shortstop from the Dominican Republic, Peña is considered a top-tier talent and could be the best player in the class. The Mets are expected to sign him to a deal worth around $5 million, which would be the largest bonus they've ever given to an international free agent.

  • Yovanny Rodriguez
A 6'4", 200 lb catcher from Venezuela, Rodriguez is similar to Eloy Jiménez, another top international prospect from the Dominican Republic. Rodriguez signed a $2.85 million bonus with the Mets.

  • Bohan Adderley
A 6'3", 190 lb shortstop/center fielder from the Bahamas, Adderley is known for his power-speed combination.

  • Vladi Miguel Guerrero
The son of former MLB player and Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero Sr., Guerrero is a 17-year-old outfielder/first baseman known for his power.

The bottom 3 guys are all signed as part of the 2024 class and have played in games in the organization over the summer.

Pena is 2025 and considered the top or top 3 IFA.

Yes, he is listed as the number 2 prospect. Read where the Mets are allocating 80% of their international funds to him.

Alonso is not signing a 2 or 5 year deal at $20 per.

Even with the way teams boycotted players this past year- The current QO's expect to be more than that.

Agreed. However, don't think he'll accept less than $25M/per year, especially with Boras.
On the whole I agree. Alonso may accept less than $25M per year on a longer contract. Maybe he accepts 6 years $140 M. But I don't think there is any chance that 5/$100M gets it done. Unless Alonso is willing to offer a significant hometown discount.

I really think this may come down to an internal battle between Stearns and Cohen. Stearns, who has no emotional ties to Alonso, may believe the money is better spent elsewhere. Cohen may believe that due to Alonso's popularity, he may be worth a slight overpay.

We'll know soon enough. Once the WS ends, there is a five day window in which teams have exclusive negotiating rights to their own free agents. Two years ago, Cohen signed Diaz in that window. We'll see if he tries to get it done with Alonso then. My guess is no.

I didn't think Alonso should get more than 2 year contract. His past 2 years have given a very Chris Davis (Baltimore) vibe. In 5 years, he may not even belong in the league.

Paul Blackburn, whom you may remember (but it's understandable if you don't) has had back surgery and will miss 4-5 months. So figure he will be unavailable for Opening Day at the very minimum.

My guess is a 6 yr/162M deal to match Freeman will likely be required.

Alonso “sales” would also be a part of the decision as well.
Outside of Lindor, he is most likely the most popular Met and he may even be above him.
I don’t think he can get above 25 per but I also don’t think it would be smart to just be stupid about it either.

I can't see Alonso signing for less than 6 yrs $162M-$170M based on his $174M market value and Freeman's 6 yrs $162M contract. Taking $150M over 6 yrs would be a huge surprise hometown discount that probably isn't in the cards.

Pete getting 25 per is insane, and certainly not six years. IF someone wants to give him that money great. I wish him no ill will but that's highway robbery for the team that pays that.

The player (Pete) doesn't work for the agent. The agent works for the player. A prime example of it is Riddick of the NY Jets. He previous agent cost him money by being greedy. Riddick fired him and sign a new agent who got him a new deal. The deal for this year has incentives to help Riddick to make up for some of the lost income. Boras doesn't have the same intimidation factor he once had.

I'm puzzled by Doc having Baty at third over Mauricio. Baty is likely to be part of a trade for help at another position. Otherwise, Baty is a bench piece. And why does Doc think Pete is gone? Vientos could slide into the DH position and be available to play 3rd and backup Pete at 1st. I love Marte, but it's time to move on from him. Injuries and age are starting to catch up to him. I see Cohen going all in on Soto. Even if he doesn't get Soto, he'll at least drive the price way up and put the Yankees in a tough position. The Yankees don't have the money to get into a bidding war with the Mets. George isn't running to the the Yankees anymore. You know the old saying, parents build the wealth and the kids spend it. That's the case with the Yankees now. YES can't solve all their money problems.

I like to see this team:

1B Pete
2B McNeil/Acuna (SS)
SS Lindor
3B Mauricio
LF Nimmo
CF Taylor
RF Soto might be $40+ million man
DH Vientos

Bench:
Torrens C
McNeil OF when needed
Baty 3B/DH
No more Stewart. Scan the free agent market for another OF

Starting pitching:

Burnes might cost you $30 million
Senga
Manaea must re-sign him even if it cost you $20 million
Peterson
Blackburn

Depth pieces:
Butto a spot in BP or 6th starter to help Senga
Megill a spot in BP

Relief pitching:
Diaz
Garrett
Stanek please re-sign him

Not sure of the rest of the bullpen. relievers are a crap shoot.

I'm puzzled by Doc having Baty at third over Mauricio. . . . .
Baty's career minor league batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and, of course, OPS are all higher, in some cases way higher, than Marucio's. The only thing that Mauricio has over Baty is that he's younger. And Mauricio hasn't played in a year.

Yet you have him as the Mets starting third baseman batting cleanup, and you are puzzled that someone else does not?

Pete Alonso = Chris Davis 2.0
dude - Davis played 13 years and had 4 years over 30 HR and 2 years over 100 RBI -295 HR and 780 RBI for his career .233/.315/.774
Pete - 5 non covid years 5 years over 30 HR 3 over 100 RBI 226 HR 586 RBI .249/.339./.854 his 2 years without 100 RBI were 94 & 88

Davis only had 2 other years with over 80 RBI
