There is no one rule. Different companies can treat this differently. Other than getting quotes from other insurers there is not much you can do.

Insurance agent here...

Tickets don't go on in the middle of a policy term and they don't come off in the middle either, so you could end up paying longer.

But yes, some companies look at 3 years, others 5. There are also companies that scale the tickets back, so the same ticket this year will hurt more than the same ticket 3 years ago.

Yep got a new quote saved$600. They did me a favor by showing me the violations on the renewal.

This happened to us, sort of, a number of years ago. My then 17 year, 11 day old daughter caused about $30,000 of vehicular mayhem on a fine Saturday morning. The cops didn't write her for anything because A) nobody was injured and B) I had, at some point in the past, pulled all three of them out of the twisted wreckage of their own patrol cars. Our insurance company, however, was going to treat us like a Cub Scout pack at a Michael Jackson sleepover.

My wife started making calls at policy renewal time and Encompass told her that if we switched all of our insurance over to them, they'd be willing to look past this one little mistake.

Another insurance question : anyone have New Jersey manufacturers car insurance ? Rates look great , but have heard that when it's time to make a claim njm isn't so great . I am thinking of switching to them , offered through work .

I have them & I love them. They actually send back money at the end of the year. I've never had a claim though

Every company will have good and bad experiences when it comes to claims. Even from my side, I see good and bad, even within the same company.

NJM used to be the gold standard when it came to rates. Though they are still good, there are many companies that beat them, even factoring in their dividends. BTW, their homeowners policy is extremely ordinary. There are MUCH better home policies.

Though everyone wants to save money, you have to take a very honest look at yourself and what you need and what you have. I recommend the highest liability coverage, because that is covering YOU.

Yep , good points . I always take the highest liability coverage . The basic limits are not enough .
anyone else ? Njm claims ? I don't care how cheap it is , if and when it comes to a claim you need that insurance to be there for you.

Liberty Mutual did not pick up any of my son's careless driving nor my wife's ticket in NYS just 18 months ago combined with my homeowners which i did with my previous company i saved $600.

Worth a shot if you have stuff from a few years ago that your current company is holding against you. If you arean RU alum I think they also give you a break as well.

They also offered me the GPS good driver plug in module that would save me an additional $100 just for trying and if we drove defensively for 90 days you could get additional savings . Agent said 13% was average savings.
Anyone do this ?

[roll]He also said if we drove like some of you guys that we would not be penalized [roll]

If you are eligible---and you can be if any one in your family or in-law's family was/is
in the military, hard to find better coverage at a lower price than USAA.

Homeowner's, 3 cars, and a personal/family umbrella liabillity policy all
with them. Beat next best quote by $2300 annually when we moved to NJ
last year.

I've had a couple of claims with njm (auto and home) and theyve been great. My parents have as well.

If this is your only concern, I would say go with them.

Not everyone can get NJM. NJ Reinsurance is their "standard" company and their rates are not good.

Companies do not run Motor Vehicle reports every year for cost purposes.

USAA is very good.

The college discount is one of the funniest discounts out there. You can get it through various companies going direct to them, but you may not get it by going to an agent. The funny thing is thought, I have discounts that you can't get by going direct. The rates work out to the same.

I have had NJM for about 30 years. I have had multiple claims over the years mostly minor and two major and I have never had an issue.

I work for a major carrier and posting this from my office, and I will say it's not clear-cut 5 years chargeability... the state says the insurance company CAN charge upto 5 years, doesn't necessarily mean the insurance company has to charge for 5 years. They leave that decision to the insurance company, the carrier I work for only charges it up to 3 years, and we do honor requests to remove violations mid-term (meeting certain requirements of course). But with that said, we're definitely not one of the less expensive carriers for NJ state.

I've had them for my auto insurance for 30 years, and they are the best to deal with, hands down. I've had four or five things over the years, from cracked windshield to someone backing into me in a parking lot, and they handle everything. Their follow-up is top notch, too. I hit a deer once and they sent an adjuster within a day, then within a week sent me a check for the estimated damage. They didn't care if I fixed the car or not (I fixed it), but it was as easy it gets. If you can get them for car insurance, I highly recommend them for their service alone. They're also a non-profit company, so they send a check to each policy holder that is typically in the neighborhood of 10% of the cost of the annual policy. Some years it's been closer to 5%, and other years it's been 12% or so, but it comes in around 10%.

I had one claim against NJM about 5 years ago (a guy backed into me at a stop sign) and they couldn't have been nicer or more cooperative. There was zero work on my part - they called me that day and informed me that one of their policyholders had authorized a claim on my behalf and that I should feel free to immediately take my car to the body shop of my choosing and have the shop contact them with the estimate.
