Wow. Darnold just went right down the field with great passes to tie up this Carolina-Minnesota game.
Capped off with a 2pt conversion shuffle pass.

So much for all the gloating "Darnold is a bust. He got traded by the Jets. Barkley was clearly a better pick."

Darnold actually led the NFL in rushing TDs through 4 weeks I think.

Darnold now has the semblance of an OL. Apples and oranges with respect the picks.

John Mara may turn out to be the most disappointing of the current local owners , considering he started life on third base and how good his father was.

The Mara's are generally well spoke of by players and employees. All indications are they are good to work for. However I think Giants won first two Super Bowls because NFL/Rozelle injected themselves into Mara family dysfunction and got them to hire George Young (who was NFL exec of the year five times). Young built the Giants from Parcells on down (Taylor, Banks, Sims, Reasons, Morris etc). Young hired Acorsi who got Eli, Osi, Tuck, Kiwanuka, Burress and more. Once Acrosi players were done the Giants turned into a pumpkin. Young and Acorsi (with hat tip to Rozelle) made the Giants. Eli situation became a mess it didn't have to be and that falls on the owners imo

Lest you forget, under Wellington Mara the Giants did not make the playoffs from 1964 through 1981. This included fan ticket burning and "Cry to Mara" towels. It wasnt until George Young and then Ernie Accorsi that they became a good franchise again.

Wellington also didn’t screw over long time fans with PSL’s. Or build a stadium no one seems to like .

Wasn't it Wellington AND his brother? I think part of the NFL intervention was to put the brother out of the management picture.

Yes - Tim Mara founded the Giants and passed to Wellington & Jack (who passed to Tim J Mara - and I think sold his share to the Tisch family in the 90's). Wellington was generally the fact of the franchise though.

Not sure what this has to do with the current state of the Giants roster - about 20 NFL teams have seat licenses and MetLife Stadium (as bad as it is) was a combined effort between the Giants and Jets.

Point was that during Wellington's tenure - the Giants had a 17 year gap in making the playoffs finishing last in their division 9 times. The trick to being a good owner would appear to be hiring a good Football Executive to run the team. In the late 70's - the Pete Rozelle stepped in and assisted the Giants search of a GM and pushed for George Young who it was rumored the Giants did not want to hire as they preferred people who "Giants" guys. Young lead to Accorsi who as assistant GM and already had a Front Office background with the Colts and Browns.

Let's recap:
  • Tim Mara - founder & executive = Great.....Appeared in 10 Championships winning 4.
  • Wellington & Tim J. Mara as Co-Owners without George Young = bottom of the barrel for many years
  • Wellington & Tim J Mara as co-Owners with George Young = very good - 2 Super Bowl Championships
  • Wellington & Bob Tisch as co-owners with Young/Accorsi = ok - 1 Super Bowl appearance
  • John Mara & Steve Tisch as co-owners with Accorsi / Reese = very good - 2 Super Bowl Championships
  • John Mara & Steve Tisch as co-owners with Gettleman = bottom of the barrel
Notice a trend?

It just means it’s all about winning . Win and the other stuff doesn’t matter

It means: put together an excellent front office. That's always the answer.

Exactly. The other piece of this is to not let front office failures linger when things are not working out.
Agree. Frankly, before midseason last year, it seemed crystal clear that Gettleman was going to be gone after the season. Then, for some inexplicable reason, he just stayed. Ugh.

A simple concept that is so hard to understand for some.
"Can't fire Garrett! We need to keep continuity. Jones would have 3 OCs in 3 years."
How's that working out now?
A 2nd year under a bad (terrible?) OC is much worse for Jones than a 1st year under an actual competent OC.

It's amazing how the Giants have turned into Rutgers.
"Continuity" of a bad product just means you continue to be bad.

On the other hand you do need to let a process play out. Otherwise you are going to be constantly churning through regimes as turnarounds rarely occur in 2 years time.

Not necessarily true. At least in the NFL.
Many, many teams have had 2-3 year turnarounds in just the past couple of years.
Or at least showed something encouraging by Years 2/3.

If the "regime" is still worse in the NFL after 2-3 years then maybe it's time to turn it over again.

Browns: 0-16 to 7-8-1 to 6-10 to 11-5 to now 4-3
Bengals: 2-14 to 4-12 to now 4-2
Chargers: 5-11 to 7-8 to now 4-2
Cardinals: 3-13 (dumped Rosen and drafted Murray) to 5-10-1 to 8-8 to now 6-0
Buffalo: 6-10 to 10-6 to 13-3 now 4-2 (note - Allen went 10-6 with 20TD/9Int his 2nd year. He never "struggled" like everyone wants to say. He immediately showed he was a potential keeper at QB)

It's not a "we need to wait for 5 years before we start winning" type of league anymore.

Barkely, Toney and Golladay out again this week.
Adding onto Thomas going on IR this week.
Just end the season already.

Breaking News: WRs with a history of injury problems out multiple weeks with injury problems.

Good thing we spent 5y 90m....err sorry that was the OBJ deal that was "too much for a WR1".
Good thing we spent 4yr 72m and a 1st round pick on WRs with injury histories.

There was a reason literally no other team was offering Golladay more than 1 year - except the Giants.

Not that I disagree with the idea of putting a focus on guys who can stay healthy, nor was I a big fan of the Golladay signing, but prior to only playing 5 games last year, Golladay played 16 and 15 games in the 2 previous seasons.

So yes, he did miss games last year, but I think if you only go after guys who play 16 games year in year out the pickings will be slim. Certainly the Giants receiving core has proven completely incapable of doing so.

I think Gettlemen has had enough of a run here. It's his 4th year, and the trend is not upward. He needs to go.

Joe Judge though is less then 2 years in. I think this year has been incredibly disappointing, and that very much includes what we have seen from the coaching, but still, this is year 2, and I thought we were all fairly impressed after year 1. And of course he would be the third short term coaching regime in succession.

Daniel Jones? Kind of like Judge I need to see how this year plays out. At this point I favor another year, but he needs to show more.

New gm should choose coach . If that’s judge ok , but new gm call

Its too bad Saquon has been such a medical disaster. Before the draft Carl Banks was worried about him being too muscled up. Writers are all over GM for wasting a pick on Saquon but he was supposed to "generational" (overused phrase but it fit him). Look what Derrick Henry is doing - he's a throwback to the Eric Dickerson, Earl Campbell, Walter Payton days. Runs over people, around people, past people - he's a lot of fun to watch. Saquon should have been same kind of player

On offense today they will be without. Barkley, Sheppard, Golladay, Toney, Thomas, Gates (IR) and Lemeuix. Jones not gonna last very long sadly IMO. The O line had issues to begin with now with Peart starting at LT it dosent look well for Jones. Peart and Solder have been brutal at both Tackle spots.

TD ruled on the field overturned by review, ball placed on the 1/2 yard line and 2nd down. Run play stuffed, roll out by Jones and the lone receiver is well covered, 4th down run play stuffed. Turnover on downs.

Team is so frustrating.

Easy catch by Sills goes through his hands.

And I feel Slayton has to adjust better on that sideline ball.

I know I'm a bit of a Jones apologist but he gets so little help.

Ya, new GM calls the shots, no doubt. But new GM may want to let Judge and Jones have another year, and if they stink then replace those guys which then resets the GM's clock.

On pace to set a record for shooting themselves in the foot with OL miscues. Not even holding to protect Jones.

A first down pass negated by illegal man down field.

First down run by jones negated by illegal motion.

Jail break sack on 3rd down.

WTF.

I really think Jones may be very good. We just may never know (at least not as a Giants QB).
