The season has started. Last year's winners on the PGA are playing the real Tournament of Champions. The first two tournaments are played in beautiful Hawaii but on high scoring courses. It's fun to watch especially to start the new year off but let's not confuse these with a major course.

Same request as last year. Let's keep this thread about the PGA Tour and the 4 Majors.
If you want to talk about the LIV issues start a new thread please.

Former Rutgers golfer is in the field. He will be playing his first year of his 2 years exemption, thanks to his win last year!

Gotterup has struggled since winning., missing something like 7 of 11 cuts. While one of the longest hitters on tour, his lack of accuracy, sometime only hitting the fairway 40%, had put him behind the field.

There is no cut this week. He stands T51 out of 59 entered in the Signature Event. He is driving much better (66.7%) but the rest of the game has not been there as he comes back from a more than 2 month layoff.

Wild drive, penalty, Drive, 4th on green, 2putts
It's a lot more windy today then all week. So nobody is going to shoot 11 under, 62 today, there were 3 guys yesterday. The positive is the overhead shots of the surfers riding big waves in the 20+ feet range. Never been to Hawaii. It used to be on my bucket list. Other interests these days. But without a doubt maybe the most beautiful state in the United States!

Too early for this thread. Season doesn't begin until April 10.

A little OT. Joined an indoor simulator place. Trying to keep the swing going. The technology is crazy. This one gives you uneven lies.

It's 2 years from now? I assumed it was 2 years from winning Myrtle last Spring

A few things. First, not a surprise but the Genesis will be moved away from Riviera CC. The course didn't suffer any damage but very close by. Too much to overcome. It will be hosted by a course to be named later.

Chris Gotterup shot a -5 yesterday and is currently tied for 35th. He will start today's round within the hour. Players have been shooting low numbers today and he has lost 8 spots while not even on the course.

LIV with a good win yesterday by signing a deal with Fox. The fact that they are on a real network is a big deal. The WB was a joke.

+1
Very nice deal for LIV.

Chris finished in the 40's at the Sentry and missed the cut by 4 strokes at the other stop on the islands. Still having some of the same issues. 162nd in Driving Efficency and 108th in Shots Gained off the Tee which has to contribute to 115th in Shots Gained on Approach and an avg of 40' from Pin on Greens in regulation.

He on the course now. Par at the first, needs to match or better his score from yesterday.

Chris never got it together ending up 3 Over for the round and -2 (109th) after 36 holes. This is a 54 hole cut tourney as it's played on 3 courses.

The biggest story after 36 belongs to 2nd year pro, William Mouw.. Teeing off on the Nicklaus Course Par 5 16th, he stood 6 Under for the tourney,

After two shots he was in a greenside bunker, 78' from the pin. He hit his 3rd over the Green and 4th back into the original trap, It took him 3 strokes to get out and over the Green again. 8 was back in the trap, 9 into the fairway, 10 over the Green, 11 FINALLY on the Green, and 2 putts for an 8 Over 13. He then Tripled the 146yd Par 3 17th with 2 Tee shots into the water, and Pared 18 for an 81.

That’s sounds like my game except it would be for a 101.

Lots of late withdraws (including Scottie an Xander) but there are still 5 guys on the course at -8 for their round today. David Duval shot a 59 in this tournament.

Chris got it to 5 under for the round and 7 under overall after 11 holes but with the cut looking to be -9, that's as close as he got. He finished -7 for his 10th missed cut since winning in Myrtle Beach.

The Farmers Insurance is Wed -Sat so they don't go up against the NFL Conf C'ships Sunday.

Chris Gotterup battled 35mph winds, wihich caused a hour and a half suspension of play, and a very cranky Driver on Torrey Pines North Course to shoot a 3 Under 69 which tied with Jason Day for the best round of the day on the North. He Bogeyed 11 and Birdied 7, 9, 10, and 17. Combined with his 1 Under yesterday he is currently Tied for 4th, only 2 strokes off the Leaders.

He only hit 2 of 14 Fairways (149th in the field) but made up for with some nice recovery shots and by being 2nd in scrambling (86%) and T1 overall.

Chris also just signed a new contract with Team Bridgestone (Tiger, Couples, Kuchar, Day, and a couple others).

The wind took a day off but it's Torrey Pines. Some surprisingly low scores by a few but no one has run away with this.
Certainly beautiful to watch.
Gotterup started with 2 birdies and later made a wonderful downhill putt on 8. But didn't have a good back nine. A double, two bogeys against two birdies. He is back in 15th. He did get a good amount of TV time.
Chance of rain in San Diego and winds around 15mph.

Played at a simulator last week. Something must have been up with the technology. I have experience with track man and it is very reliable. This was some other technology and was considerably off the proper numbers, most specifically within short yardages. Drives were off by minimal number but wedges and short irons had a 15-20 yard difference. Can’t be off by 1-2 clubs especially in the scoring range. Had 75 yard wedge shot sail the green by 25 yards multiple times each. So I know it wasn’t just me.

Gettin a plugged downhill lie in a trap on 5 resulting in a Bogey was a really bad break but it was set up by an off line drive into a fairway trap, one of several fairway traps he drove into,

Broken record - Once again, his driving issues caught up to him, He's been pretty damn good around the green this week, especialy on the North course in Rd 2, but it's like he's putting himself at such a disadvantage right off the bat. He's last in the field.

Driving Distance - #2 (317.4yds)

Driving Accuracy - #70 (28.6%)

He's paired with Thomas Detry today. Rutgers vs Illini?

I think I mentioned here that I met Tom Detry in Belgium at a world cycling event. Thanks to friends over there. He's one of those guys you meet and you realize he could have played a lot of other sports professionally

Nice win by Harris English played par on the back nine when most were having issues. I believe it was the hardest scoring day even more then round 2 with the wind.
Harris plays like he is calm, cool and calm but admitted he was a mess inside. He gets to play at Torrey Pines again in 3 weeks as the replacement for the Genesis moving here from Riviera.

3rd or better 3 times there including a US Open.

It's no joke that there are courses that your eyes love the pattern. Hominy Hills, Howell. Harbour Town on Hilton Head and Baltusrol Lower Course.
I'm sure Harris will be in the mix in 3 weeks

Agree with the 1st two, love the visual on each tee box. Too bad that Howell Park fell in disrepair for a while. Played Harbour Town twice. Challenging, as you can be in the fairway and still not have a clear shot to the green. Never played Baltusrol. Laslty, I love the new course in Old Bridge; my eyes love the pattern until you get to the greens; they are brutal.

Played there this summer. Nice course esp considering it was less than a year old. It's going to be a bigger test once the rough grows in. Agree the greens are really tough.

I have to admit the beginning of the PGA Tour was somewhat meh. I normally love the beginning of the season but weak fields and boring golf. Today finally is fun because of the field and weather! Big names on the course and a most entertaining fight against the fog, wind, drizzle... Golf is back or at least for today!

Ratings are cratering. Golf needs to figure this out quickly.

Only 18 of the top 50 there. Assuming you mean the big names in contention. I do like the elements. It’s the only fair thing to stop these players.

Maybe the best entertaining round in 2025.

The Crosby and now AT&T always made me feel, usually incorrectly, like there was hope for an early Spring. I remember as a teen watching and going out in the yard to swing the club.

For me it wasn't a specific tournament but the West Coast tournaments in general. For many years, in the winter I we go through Ben Hogan's Five Lesson. The Modern Fundamentals of Golf. The first lesson and the one that covered the most pages, was the grip. There was always a golf club in the TV room. I would go through that book over and over every winter to remind me of the fundamentals and those I got away from. By the time the West Coast swing was going on I couldn't wait for any slightly good weather. Years later I was playing in the Shore Winter Golf League. It was started by my boss at Spring Meadow PGA Pro Angelo Petraglia and later named the John Caliendo who took over from Angelo. John was a postal worker in Long Branch who ran the tournaments and more importantly computing handicaps which was hard to do back then as it was all manual calculations. Great men!

I don't know where but son's regular group is supposed to start the season tomorrow. He told me last night he's definitely a maybe.

Tinton Falls.

I fill in once in a while when someone can't make it but he knows better than to ask before May.😊
They should check out the Shore Winter Golf League, now in it 64th year! From what I hear there are different division competing. Like local pros and assistants, ranked amateurs and just regular golfers. Can't say what it cost these days but they play on very good courses.
