The two oldest Rutgers college-based taverns go back to shortly after the Repeal of Prohibition (the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution) on December 5, 1933. Olde Queen’s Tavern advertised in the November 1, 1934 Daily Home News when it opened as Strickland’s Grill the next day. It was Sally’s Tavern by 1954. But the elder statesmen of all Rutgers student bars first advertised in the March 24, 1934 Targum and has never changed its name – The Corner Tavern at Easton Avenue and Somerset Street. The March 10, 1929 Sunday Times of New Brunswick said the town of New Brunswick was once known in history as “The City of Taverns.”
