OT: Seaside Heights in for a big change

I’ve said this before but living here I love all that comes with it.

Love the excitement, the pace, the energy.

And I also love September when the water is warmest and the crowds have thinned.
I loved going down the shore.
Besides the ocean,
Still remember as a kid the barkers selling their products .
Used to stop by one stall where the guy chopped fruits and veggies and gave the kids what he chopped up trying to sell that product to the mothers looking on.
Also the rip off stalls with games of "skill" where I spent far more money then the prize was worth trying to give it to my girlfriend in my teenage years

After leaving Jersey and getting married I took my wife back to see my old hometown , hd her eat a Jimmy Buff's and of course have pizza done to perfection at the place that my parents ordered the family pizza when I was growing up in the 1950 and was still going strong when I took her in the early 2000s.
But the crowning glory of that trip was when down the shore on the boardwalk my wife ( from Midwest) seen her first seagull and was shocked at how large the pigeons were in Jersey
I never let her forget that and consider it one of my favorite shore memories .

While one person's experience is not definitive, have been going to Asbury Park since 1984--hundreds of times. Even when the beach area was downtrodden and referred to by one artist as Beirut by the Sea. Not once did I ever encounter any problems or feel unsafe. Are there areas that are rough? Yes, but there is no need to go there. But I have been through the west side numerous times, and never had a single problem.
I recall visiting the boardwalk in Asbury Park 20 years ago, when it was at a low point, and it was actually clean and merely empty. Robert DeNiro and James Franco made a movie there and they actually had to make the place look dirtier than it was.

Ahhhh. The Sawmill! Great memories. Hoping for the best for Seaside. It deserves it

Asbury Park, at least near the water is significantly a more appealing place to visit than 30 years ago.

Plenty of people are noticing the Seaside Heights upgrades

Is there another NJ Beach town that supports RU Athletics anywhere even close to what Seaside Heights does?...There are video billboards entering Borough from Rt 35 and when you cross over bridge and enter Seaside Heights that always have RU on them...Theres another video board on boardwalk and a B1G screen on Casino pier that always promote RU...B1G places on Boardwalk all support RU..Seaside Heights is Only 1 Mile long

The Bridgewater of the Jersey Shore.

I see a couple guys in this thread that got shot down by the guidettes at temptations back in the day.

I was in seaside heights last year. It was fine. Good pizza!
I grew up in TR and let me say, seaside was far better 25yrs ago. Most other places have priced out middleclass and lower income families (as BRG said) on top of that, the island has more section 8 per square mile than any other municipality in NJ. Just last week a family was carjacked at gunpoint at 8pm just off the main strip

As a kid, we'd ride our bikes over the bridge after washing cars all morning so we could play games on the boardwalk etc.. Those were fun times for sure but make no mistake, Seaside of today is not cleaner or safer than 25yrs ago
I’ve been living , working and playing in Seaside / Toms River for the last 45 years. I respectfully disagree. Seaside heights is almost unrecognizable from where it was even 10 years ago. The huge nightclubs are gone and great housing developments and house rehabilitations are going up everywhere. The boardwalk crowd is a much higher class and the section 8 motels and rentals are slowly being eliminated.

More work is needed but extraordinary progress has been made.

I would define my experience the same, been going since the mid 80's. Of course back then the only place you went was the Stone Pony, in and out. My favorite bar band at the time Yasgur's Farm used to frequent the place.. always a good time

I think it's best to make fun of Troll2K for his completely embarrassing, unsupportable stances, especially if you've lived in his sacred suburban haven and found it to be the most boring, mediocre place in Central Jersey. Guy's afraid of his own shado, and that says way more about him than whatever set of coordinates he's trying to insult.

Whoever is paying for his content really isn't getting their money's worth unless they want everyone to turn against them.

This board has tons of suburban folks in his generation and even they think he's absurd.

LOL Asbury is no dump. I swear you people are scared of your own shadow. Tell the millionaires moving into Asbury properties left and right. It's become a national destination which actually sucks because it's hard to get in there sometimes. Some of the best restaurants in Jersey, good shopping, fun bars all over, nice stretch of beach, etc.

It's good to see Seaside Heights becoming a destination again as well. The more places like this in Jersey the better.
Is the Monte Carlo salt water pool still there? It had beach access as well.Good times back in the Day.

I remember they used to let me into that place wwhen I looked nothing like the dress code suggested. Riggers, Razzles and the Dutch Mill Inn were more my kind of places.. Bermuda Pub too.

BTW.. anyone know what the original plan was for that steel structure? Was it owned by the Hemmingways people and going to be a giant new banquet facility? (Ocean County desperately needed that). I thought Sandy just destroyed that plan and created an insurmountable financial hurdle for tha tproject.

A couple of years ago I went to a show at the Paramount in AP
We walked the boardwalk right there and I was surprised how nice it was

You'll see some different histories of the "original" plan. Most recall that the true, grand plan was a massive bar/restaurant/banquet facility with a pool club, with an emphasis on the pool club. It later transitioned to a mixed commercial/residential project years later, but never got past the beams.

The new project is going to be a massive positive for the area and a continuation towards the end of Snooky Seaside

Having lived in Asbury Park for almost 5 years I can say for certain that I'm glad that people like TK don't frequent my city. One of the best restaurant and music scenes on the entire East coast, great, clean beaches, friendly locals, and an inclusive community.
agree, i am at Wonder Bar few times a year for music and the food/shops are great

however the side that argues how much its changed doesn't go ANYWHERE NEAR THOSE TRACKS, BESIDES FLYING OVER THEM ON THE RIDE IN WITH THE WINDOWS UP AND DOORS LOCKED.

I mean I frequwnt chat and nibble, jimmys and soul sistahs all on the west side of town. The shell of the turf club has music every Tuesday in the summer and Springwood Park has live music every Monday. But yall can keep living in your boring towns and enjoy your trips to target and Applebee's.

Yeah, who wants towns with low crime and good schools! LOL. Friendly reminder. AP is the worst (literally) town in NJ to raise a family. #512 out of 512:

And close enough but all the great places that have expanded down Main Street from Brandos to R Bar.

Of course you can't go to the Paramount now, or Convention Hall as both have been condemned as unsafe.

You find places like this in any city, large or small. Not news.
Agree not news

Just pointing out that most who frequent AP and talk about how great its doing don't go anywhere near the other side

@GoodOl'Rutgers the original plan is what @RU at the shore stated. From what I am told is one of the brothers walked away from the project and the other did not have the $$ to finish it. When the town pressured to have it completed a plan was submitted to make it mixed use with condos, but the steal at this point was not usable anymore so nothing was done with it.

His town used to be a lot better back before he did a stint as mayor. They voted him out because of how quickly it went downhill and became a place nobody wanted to be. I hear it's improving again.

He's still the Grand Imperial Exalted Poobah of Douchebagville though.

No, no they can't take that away from him.

Jokes like that will get you nothing but Snickers from the crowd, which really isn't very satisfying.
That was a Whopper. But I can recall a story where Baby Ruth and her sister Mary Jane were both kidnapped and held for 100 Grand. The two Sugar Babies were taken by a couple of real Goobers named Mike and Ike. Some Cracker Jack detective found them stashed in a Park Avenue.. WhatChaMaCallIt.. er.. duplex, before the Smarties got their Payday. He was a real Lifesaver.

If you made it through that alive, Kudos.

Mmmm, Smarties. Those are soooo good.

Alas, me eating any sugary candy at all is not something to warm my doctor's heart these days. I ate a fairly large bag of Swedish Fish about 6 weeks ago. I was thinking "but the doctor said to eat more fish, or at least take some fish oil supplements", so I figured it'd be okay. Was so good.

I physically felt like total crap for nearly a week after that. Perhaps next time I'll just have one small Swedish Fish and call it a year.

Nothing I've seen in Asbury Park or Neptune compares to when I lived briefly on Remson in New Brunswick in the late 80s, with the projects blocks away where you'd hear gun shots at night. That neighborhood was scary and rundown.
