OT: Stanford athletics budget cuts

well aquainted with university budgets and taxation and everything I said should be mandated. No not for profit enterprise should sit on billions in endowments while cutting sports, raising the cost of admission, etc etc
That’s why I still feel in this case when they say “it’s not about the money”, they mean it.

It’s something else.

I'm well aware of the history of oppression of black people in America throughout it's history both in society and sports. Can I ask you a personal question? Are you or have you ever been involved in the civil rights movement in America? The reason I ask is because I was as a young man in the 60's and 70's. I remember clearly the I Have a Dream speech. I remember where I was when I heard the news about his murder. Two summers ago when I went to visit my daughter in Atlanta I finally had the chance to visit the museum and his gravesite. Not sure how much of Dr. King's writing you have read but if you did you would probably come to the conclusion that he would not support the black lives matter movement and it's history of violence.
Ironically the closest slogan I've heard in the past few years that he would support is somehow now labeled as racist. I firmly believe that with conviction Dr. King would say All Lives Matter.
If it makes you feel better about yourself continue to sign off by saying BLM. It's an empty and useless gesture but you're welcome to use it.,
Also please never assume that you know my level of education and what I do and do not know. It might surprise you.

Once again I'll ask the question. What does eliminating the Stanford sailing team have to do with racial injustice?
he absolutely would say that, he'd say blm is a false narrative, he'd also be appalled at black America today and disgusted with the 'leaders'. shame really, such a great man with such a powerful message that has been usurped by selfish political pandering

what do you think it is?
A “leveling” situation.

And I put that in quotes on purpose because to me it’s seems like this is being done to show, “look, we’re doing something.”

But I still haven’t figured out what the “something” is in this case. LOL

In case you haven’t noticed, there is a concerted effort to cull sports at top tier institutions. Harvard will be intramurals soon if people have their way.

Is the $30 Million raised enough to fund the sports for a year, or to endow them in perpetuity? I recall Rutgers using that argument when they killed all those sports a few years back. The alumni raised enough money to fund Men's Rowing, and the University said they needed to raise enough money to endow the sport, so the interest off the endowment would fund the sport forever. Something like 10x the cost of funding the sport for one year. That was the final nail.

I think you might want to read more of Dr. King's writings. He was once called the "angriest man in America" as there was clearly anger there at the plight of black America, along with the hope he spoke of too. While I'm sure he would condemn any violence associated with protests (as he did when that happened at his protests), it's nearly 100% certain he'd support the BLM movement and the protests.

In fact in one of his final essays he complained of “an aggressively hostile police environment" and said that, “police must cease being occupation troops in the ghetto and start protecting its residents." In that same essay he said, "Yet very few cities have really faced up to this problem and tried to do something about it. Policing is the most abrasive element in Negro-white relations.” Those words are completely consistent with the message we see today from BLM and others crtiical of policing in communities of color. As an aside, I much prefer the messaging of "reimagining public safety" vs. the term "defunding the police."

How much does it cost Stanford if alumni fully fund the sport?
The story said the sports involved came in at $4M a year in costs.. and the athletes raised $30M and Stanford said.. not enough.

I'd imagine they'd have to look at annual returns on whatever is raised to be $4M or greater.. to allow for inflation.. which is here for awhile.. Thanks Obama.. so.. I dunno.. what's a conservative estimate for guaranteed returns these days? 3%? So to get, say, $4M a year you could spend.. and another $1M to grow the fund... you'd need a lump some of somewhere around $167M,, so, yeah, the $30M figure is nice.. could be used to fund those sports for 7-8 years.. but as an endowment, they'd need a lot more.

Title IX looks at scholarship counts not number of programs.

But where did you have 3 more women's sports in your original list? Only saw volleyball thrown in at the end.
Everything else looked to be equal.
Will Title 9 look at men that are running as women and count them as men or women in what are labelled by the NCAA as Women's Sports.

Various NATIONAL polls have polled African Americans about their desires to 'defund the Police''.

It will come a shock to those Whites that are driving this part of the left designs on changing America, BUT 80 % OF AFRICAN AMERICANS POLLED WANT THE SAME OR MORE POLICE !!!

police in those days was very different than today and the anti-protest TV footage from those days shows it..

calling Dr. King the angriest man was probably RACIST

this re-making of King into the angriest man is merely a ploy to excuse anger and violence of today... that is, repaint MLKs history in order to USE IT.

And even if you find anger in the Birmingham Jail letter, and many do insert whatever level of anger they need MLK to display there, you must put it in the context of the day.. real segregation.. real racism.. dogs attacking REAL peaceful protesters. MLK would laugh at the idea of "micro-aggressions" and the Marxists currently using race to destroy this nation from within.

I find it somewhat humbling that I was at a Dinner for the Rev. Ralph Abernathy with CORE sponsoring the dinner to honor his work with Dr. ML King as part of the Southern Leaders Conference on Transportation and Non-Violent Integration. Later the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

In the crowd; Donald J Trump.

The history of race relations AND religious relations is full of explosive events, between different races or same races, different religions or same religions. We can only be kind to those we meet and follow the precepts kindness and goodness to those we meet.

Stanford will discontinue 11 of our varsity sports programs at the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year: men’s and women’s fencing, field hockey, lightweight rowing, men’s rowing, co-ed and women’s sailing, squash, synchronized swimming, men’s volleyball and wrestling.

Going from 36 sports to 25 when the average Division I has 18 sports. 850 student athletes are 12% of the undergraduate population. I don’t see a problems with the cuts, instead of giving scholarships to athletes it might be better for academic achievements. Most of those sports are for rich people, another way for the rich to bypass the rules.
Says the guy that's all in on the American Dream mall with its high end stores that cater to rich white people.

What your calculation, and Stanford, don't take into account is the continuing annual donations subsequent to the raising of the $30M endowment. I am personally aware of "Friends of...." lacrosse programs that raise over $300k annually. Not all the proposed cut programs could do that, but between 11 programs the total raised would be substantial.

“ All in” what does that mean? I said it will survive because that‘s how businesses work. If they don’t success, they go bankrupt and someone else try, if they fail they go bankrupt and another company buy them at a lesser price. Look at the Revel casino, brought two times already since Christie bailed them out. I believe one of the casino years ago went down to less than a million dollar before someone could make it profitable. Yes, the mall is for rich people. I might bring the kids to Legoland or the aquarium but it’s sure expensive. I guess I could afford one trip.

There are idiots like you hoping for failure because it’s NJ or about Democrats. Business is business and some one will try to make it profitable.

That is a weird response.

All the money that investors, stockholders, governments, tax-payers have lost on these deals and you claim "surviving" via distressed assets is some kind of victory?

The mall will survive or continue. No victory. You clowns are happy that it would fail just like when Atlantic City is failing.

That‘s strange when you have New Jerseyans rooting for NJ corporations to fail.

They already failed.. every year it did not open was a FAIL.. every year AC loses jobs ad tax revenues is a FAIL. There is no happiness over recognizing failures... look in the mirror, clown.

Are there high schools with synchronized swimming, maybe 5 in the whole country? Maybe private HS. Not many with rowing, sailing and squash anyone?

I'd say there are more, Midwest and West Coast, and many YM/YWCA programs. And I don't think they are any in private school, but if they are they all should be denied admission to college of any sort.

You‘re one of the clowns that want them to fail. The casinos are still making profits and I included an article earlier where they are investing $400 million in upgrades.

It’s really doesn’t matter to me but it’s sad when you see idiots rooting for companies to fail.

gotcha lol

college expense has to be figured out soon. I'm no lib by any stretch but the cost of education, non profits sitting on billions, the debt structure etc etc needs to be addressed

wow.. WaPo link.. in which WaPo asserts that MLK would support the Marxist BLMers.. even as they use violence against the general population.
yup, written by Richard Lischer who is a Duke Theologian

just funny he's pawn that off as his own thought but willing to give the benefit of the doubt

Back on sports;

Fencing; either sport foil or sabre, either sex.
Bowling; either size pins.
Greyhounds; it's not even a live rabbit.
Harness racing; Story.

Freehold Raceway, the NJSP used to have a traffic post from the parking lot to the building. You were sent there and had to direct traffic in the sun in your 100 % HEAVY WOOL uniform.

So Sgt sends me and as I am the Senior man on the day, it was a slight to have to go and sweat. But the Sgt told me to enforce the No Parking Zone along the building. So a car is parked right in front of where I am parked in the No Zone. I check out the car, no special plates, no special stickers or windshield plackards, so I write him a parking ticket. Track opens and I leave as instructed. Hour later I get a radio call to return to Barracks. Sgt is PO'ed about the parking ticket. The car belonged to the Track MD. "Why did you write the ticket ?'' I was covered; "You TOLD me to write. Sgt." He shuffles off mumbling to himself. Week later he sends me again, but tells me to NOT write up the Tracks MD. 'No problem Sarge." You guessed it....another car was parked there, again check for any special ID, nothing. Write another parking ticket. About an hour goes by and an old guy walks over. "Trooper did you write that ticket ?'' "Yes Sir I did as per my Sgt instucted". " Well that's the Tracks MD. I'm retired NJSP Lt Smith, is there anything you can do ?"
"Sir that's a different car and there is NOTHING I can do, as you would know if you were a retired NJSP Lt.. Perhaps the Doc should go to Municipal Traffic Court and explain it to the Judge. He may be able to do something, but I can't. Have a nice day." 1/2 hr later I get another 'return to Barracks'. Sgt and I go thru the same dance as the first time. He walks away again mumbling.
That was the LAST TIME he sent me to that traffic post.

Do colleges have bowling teams?

Anybody who thinks this is about money is crazy. Stanford doesn’t give two craps about 10, 20, or 30 million a year. They wanted less sports. Period. Covid was an easy excuse to cut them.

Which are the black sports? Which are the Asian sports? I was just wondering in what category particular sports should be placed.
Just for fun I looked at Stanfod's fencing teams rosters. Since we want to talk racial breakdown? Let's do so.

Women's Fencing
White - 4
Hispanic - 1
Asian - 11 (2 from NJ)

Men's Fencing
White - 5
Asian - 9

I guess Fencing is not a White but an Asian sport?
As far as eliminating them at all levels my son was a fencer in high school in New Jersey. His team mates were 90% Asian. I will confess to being White but I'm far from being rich.
Did a little research on scholarships at Stanford. As you can see there are 30 student /athletes at Stanford who fence. There are only four fencing scholarships.

In the next decade (if not already), Whites and Asians (especially Indians and Chinese) are going to become interchangeable. In my wife's medical school class and dermatology residency/fellowship, more than 30% of her classmates were Asians. Have you seen the highest incomes amongst ethnic groups? Most of these folks are in their 30-50's. Imagine how much wealth they will have accumulated in 20-30 years? That is a testament to our immigration system working correctly.

Doc's fault for not getting/using MD plates.. or to have a special spot marked off for him.

Yes. And scholarships. But only Duke, Stanford and the Ivies have them so they can help the rich white kids get in.
Not true.

Once on ESPN (probably ESPNU?) I saw the women’s NCAA Bowling Championship and one of the schools was from New Jersey.

I can’t remember which one but it was small. Caldwell maybe?
