OT: Teen killed in beach collapse in Toms River

some actually did, hence why the overcompensation after the news reports it. When I was a kid, I walked home from school by myself starting around 4th grade. Then there were all these kidnappings in the news, and the state started making stricter rules for young kids.
At the tender age of 11 I was put on an Academy bus at the Leonardo bus depot on Rte. 36 to go to a Giants game unescorted.

Didn’t know a soul on the bus.

In this case, you inferred it from what he stated. He may have implied it but his statement does not appear to be an inference.
A kid is dead - I simply asked for information - he of course did not provide it - and you chime in with a wordsmith comparison between inferred and implied. You may not be smart enough to see where that ass was going but I am. Done with this silly argument.

For everyone that ripped me a new asshole for my post here are a few quotes from the mother.....don't call me cold and insensitive....maybe you should all go attack the mom.

"It is what it is. You can’t change it,” Angela Caverly, of Union, Maine, told NJ.com of her 18-year-old son Levi Caverly’s death."

Sounds cold and insensitive to me.......

"She said her daughter, who was buried up to her neck, was well enough to drive them home to Maine, according to the outlet."
“Physically, my daughter is OK. She’s helping drive us home right now,” Angela Caverly said.

Get on your high horses and attack the mom now.

I must admit no one ever told me about digging holes in the sand and we dug some whoppers. Just like no one told me not to climb trees or was that? That I just didn't listen to them tell me, Hmmm. Anyway construction sites were the best play grounds growing up as kids. I think there was something about them too, don't care didn't listen.

It's amazing I lived this long, from falling out of trees to nails threw my foot and my Mom getting questioned by my Grammar school teacher and Principle about possible abuse. That was a hoot, as my Mom sat back in glee, now son, explain to your teacher how you got that bruise, now that scar, now that broken arm, now that cut. My older brother came up in a lot of those answers.
I was just saying the same to my wife the other day. As a kid it seemed like we spent a lot of time at the emergency room. Like you said nails in the foot, stitches, etc

Did you go to Bayshore? My bus went by the depot every day on 36 headed to bayshore

Emergency room? We hid our injuries from our parents. We lived near the Manasquan River. One of our favorite activities in the late winter/early spring as the ice started to melt in the frozen river bank. We broke of chunks of ice and used them as iceberg rafts and had an iceberg demolition derby. In hindsight, it was mildly dangerous, but a lot of fun. None of our parents told us to stop this activity, even after we came hope soaking wet.

Is there anyone left in the family that you missed?

We all walked to 1st grade and thereafter. Tons of kids. Parents had other things to do. Hit the playing field for soccer before school started with the occasional fist fight when someone tackled you too aggressively. Spent many hours playing on the train tracks or getting chased for trying to steal balls from the local driving range.

No warnings about digging deep holes on beaches, but is this real? Or is it some sort of urban legend like the warning on the lawnmower packaging warning to not use the lawmower to trim your hedges?🤣

Google William Flowers Monmouth College. If you live on the shore you know this can happen.
Yes as a kid that lived there and spent a lot of summers days very lightly supervised on the beach we were told in no uncertain terms not to dig any holes deeper than our knees. And we mostly obeyed.

I once fell from the top of a.. oh, I'd say 40-foot tree.. hit a bunch of branches on the way down and got knees hooked over the bottom branch with my head about 2 feet from the ground. I was very thankful it did not happen in "the Big Tree". Parents had no clue that happened, of course.

I never knew this was a thing. Summers in Lavalette were spent with my father “digging us to China”…. I remember huge holes that the two of us could hang in.
Obviously all accidents that involve the loss of a young person are tragic, but this is one of those times I just say “Why God?”
Ha! Same here only it was always red China. I didn’t understand the red part

"Levi was himself," said Todd Caverly, of Union, Maine. "He was odd. He was quirky. He was not real concerned with what others thought. He knew Jesus Christ. He was involved in the worship team at church, and was the drummer in a teen/young adult worship band. He was a tech nut and loved to program.

"The truth is that Scripture says that all our days are numbered," Caverly wrote. "That there is nothing we can do to add a single hour to our life. He knew that. Matthew 6:25-34."

I remember the Monmouth College one and some others from when I was a little kid at the Peninsula House Beach Club where we were members.

Our Parents and the other parents in our circle of friends used to put the fear of God with what could happen to us.

I had a little flash back to those stories watching the news last night.
Remember that well. About 8 holes were dug has part of a fraternity.

very true. When i think of the things we did as kids its amazing no one died. In my neighborhood of about 20 homes there were about 65 kids within a 10 year age range. Lots of hi-jinx for sure
Playing “games” like hide the belt and kill the man with the football. The younger kids had to be protected by older brothers.

Reminds me of kids who dig forts in snow banks and then a plow gets one. Then there is the swimmer who goes too far (I've done that) or the new driver who goes too fast etc. I've seen kids blow themselves up in chemistry class, lose a leg jumping a train, crash sleds into trees etc. Things like this are why adults being around and nosy is good. I know in my area a lot of immigrants are very conscious of the risks of digging too deep. Most of them are five foot nothing and know not to dig too deep without bracing of some kind. A few Ecuadorans near the kid might have helped him

Riiiight, because you both have the same fresh trauma and likely the same perspectives. Sounds like she is in shock, and you're trying to justify being a jerk.

Exactly. And he is taking her quote out of context, spinning it to make her look bad. Yet he still thinks his remarks were OK.

Isn't that also called rugby?
While I get the joke, we used that same term for it and the way we played there were two goal lines and you could try to run the length of the field (not long) to score and get a respite then try to go back the other way.. until you gave up the ball. It was fun because no one would go too far and try to hurt the ball carrier.

Rugby as a sport to play and to watch is huge in Philadelphia. They have a big time league with the top team playing in the top tier National Championship this past week.

Do you even know what taking out of context means? I didn't say you added anything. Exactly the opposite.

Yes I do, I am not judging the mother or the family just quoted the comment she made. I agree it was a terrible tragedy and should not happen to anybody........ But unfortunately if you make a statement on this forum that the mainstream board does not like you get chastised. Maybe I should walk around the tailgates with a Great Dane so I can become Judge, Jury and executioner......

I never said anything about your first post. It wasn't until you used a out of context comment by the mom as an excuse to try absolve yourself of your ill worded post. It was rather pathetic on your part to bring in the mom.

I think that was common at the time

I went to a Yankee/Tiger double header when I was around 12 and none of our parents knew we went.

We walked to the Rahway train station and figured out the subway

There were 5 or 6 of us on the way there but we left at different times during the second game.

But your mom didn’t know.

Mine actually put me on the bus and said, “Enjoy the game, honey!”
