OT: That was Rutgers own Becky Quick moderating the debate

Why do the Republicans agree to have liberal/democratic moderators? Makes no sense. Let the Democratic moderators do the Democratic debates and have republicans mods do the Republican debates. Better yet, have a new debate format where the role of the media is reduced. This might actually allow the candidates to "debate"...

Two answers

1. They are the Stupid party.
2. The mainstream republicans feel they have more in common with Dems than Conservatives.

These attacks on Becky Quick are fundamentally misguided. What was much more offensive was the shallowness and ugliness of the Republican Right on full display last night. Attacking entitlement programs ("Oh, for the good old days before Medicare and Social Security") , attacking the idea of government
("Oh, those nasty regulations that inhibit profiteering and corruption"), and attacking the "liberal" media (shades of Nixonian paranoia), are all demagogic attempts to stir the pot and distort the issues.

Becky Quick was just trying to do her job.

I must be in the wrong place...I thought this was a thread about an alum who did pretty well for herself. I think RU4Real had it right when he exited the other day. This board is a cesspool.

I was on the Targum when Becky and Kelly Whiteside were there, but it was more like ships passing in the night than knowing them well. Both very nice and I don't remember Becky being super liberal.

I was a senior on that Targum staff when Kelly & Tara were seniors, as well; had no idea nor care about Becky's political leanings.

LOL

She asked Donald Trump about quotes on his website...which he denied.

They asked Carson about being affiliated with the supplement company, WHICH IS A FACT, not propaganda. Propaganda is when you tell people you were assaulted in a Popeye's "organization" and the police have no record.

They asked Ted Cruz about why he opposes the budget, and he responded why don't they ask about issues.

Nevermind Carly "92%" Fiorina. Maybe Carson left her brain on the operating table with the talking fetus.

And LMAO at the Republicans who will vote for these clowns. Wahhh the media asks about things we said and now run away from! Wahhh

Maybe next time Rush can moderate and ask them which hedge fund would Jesus want to donate to their superPACs.

Going to be a cakewalk for Hillary or Bernie. Oh please let it be Carson or Trump...pretty please!!!

The older contributors to the CE Board will find it amusing that one of my friends during my undergrad days was Andy Napolitano. Heck of a nice guy.

An absolute embarassment to herself and Rutgers. Put her in the shitter with Michael Moore and flush. At least Christie represented Jersey well. "Even in Jersey you would be considered rude" Fantasy football, are you kidding me"

Elliott Lurie of Looking Glass (Brandy) was in my Frosh PE class - back in the day when two years of PE was mandatory.

Mods were awful (and I dislike most of the Republic Party candidates). Thought Chris Christie made a strong impression (and I hate CC - the only Republican candidate who would force me to hold my nose and vote for Mrs. Clinton).

When I was at RU they were called Through the Looking Glass and they were washed out with draft beer as the house band every weekend at my frat. I once saw a tv interview with them when Brandy became a hit and they talked about getting washed out with beer on weekends at the RU frats. Sounded like they didn't like it but it was part of playing the gig.

I wouldn't go crowing about association with any of the CNBC moderators. No Anderson Cooper among them, and woefully lacking in facts, especially when the opportunity for follow-up presented itself. An awful job, and I'm no media-bashing right-wing yahoo.

Becky was devastated when Florio lost the NJ governor election to Christie Whitman. My buddy who ended up going out with her briefly after she dumped her long time boyfriend and fellow Targum editor was a hardcore conservative and they would have heated discussions over politics

To the OP: "Famous".....90% of the country would not know who she was.

I was surprised she went to Rutgers because every trading room I've ever worked in turns
the TV channel when she is on. I did know from a charity event she was sitting at table next
to ours that she was a middle-aged midget--think she was in a messy divorce at the time, and wouldn't
let anyone take pictures near her. The camera guys said "we just need pictures of Eli Manning, not that
short chubby woman".

To those who disliked the Mods questions and to the GOP candidates asked to explain why they did or said something:
you-can-t-handle-the-truth-o.gif

Seems the GOP candidates and their supporters only wanted softball questions . So the whining starts about the mean mods and the way they expected those GOP Clowns to debate intelligently .

Wrong

I like many others wanted to see more economic questions....foreign policy questions...etc...not is your campaign like a clown show or with the Moderator completely getting caught in a lie about his previous comments on Rubio's tax policy in which he retracted in print...then denied ever doing it.

Epic fail in a lame ass straw man argument that you made

Candidates should be asked tough questions, but last night was a joke

Most of the GOP base understand that which is why they want to dump the weenies like GOP chair "Reince Priebus" (can't have a more drippy name than that). Ex Regan AG Ed Meese condemned GOP leaders for letting these clown shows pretending to be "debates" take place. This is a reason I don't watch these charades.

"..former Attorney General Ed Meese said the leaders of the Republican National Committee who allowed CNBC to moderate the debate should be condemned.

"After 15 minutes it was clear that this was not a debate, but a verbal shooting gallery set up by CNBC, with the targets the Republican candidates and the shooters their biased antagonists from the press,” said Meese.

“Ted Cruz accurately described what was going on,” he said. “Whoever selected the ‘moderators’ should be fired and the RNC leaders who allowed it should be condemned.”

I'd never seen here before. I thought she was super hot & the debate will jump start her career. Im glad she's an RU grad. Maybe she'll donate some money.

Those weren't tough questions they were irresponsible unintelligent uninformed derogatory attempts at bringing down the candidates. They were filled with pre-existing and often flawed positions. The moderators even injected themselves into the debate itself.

You folks are such hypocrites if you think the questions served up to Bernie and Clinton came within 1000 miles of such "toughness". The open minded party is the most closed minded ever.
Who gives a frack what Brian Steel thinks, He POS team was the one's who created such controversy.

There's a difference between tough questions asked by good moderators and stupid questions befitting of those who are just looking to play image games and skirt actual issues (a.k.a. clowns). I saw more of the latter last night.

She's probably the most famous Rutgers alumni around and interviews CEO like Buffett and Jack Welch daily. Anyone that is interested in the financial markets watch CNBC. Becky probably earns $1-2 million a year on the morning show. I use to work in broadcasting and the morning and evening newscaster earned $1 million 25 years ago.

She is always talking about Rutgers football whenever we have a big game.

She lives in a wealthy neighborhood, that's for sure.

Becky Quick is co-anchor of "Squawk Box" (M-F, 6AM-9AM ET). Quick is also anchor of the nationally syndicated "On the Money."

Quick is known for her hard-hitting interviews and profiles of some of the world's richest and most influential investors, including Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Alan Greenspan, T. Boone Pickens, Jamie Dimon, Charlie Munger and many others. She also has interviewed three U.S. presidents and has hosted panels at some of the most prestigious conferences in the world such as the Microsoft CEO Conference, Fortune's Most Powerful Women's Conference and the Allen & Co. Sun Valley Media Conference. Quick also authors a regular column for Fortune magazine as well as contributes to CNBC.com.

Previously, Quick, a seven-year veteran of The Wall Street Journal, covered the Wall Street beat for CNBC as part of the network's partnership with Dow Jones.

Prior to joining CNBC in February 2001, Quick covered various beats for The Wall Street Journal, including retail, e-commerce and the Internet. She also played a crucial role in the launch of The Wall Street Journal Online, while serving as the site's International news editor.

She graduated from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., and previously served on the board of The Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

I'd be happy to coach up Becky on her debate moderation skills during pillow talk.

I like Becky, but as an older guy, I have to say my favorite RU news woman is Natale Morales.

I used to sit near Mario Batali in class and get carded by James at the Pub. Does that count?
Was there when these guys were there too but can't say I have any memory of meeting either one. Pretty sure Mario worked at stuff yer face when he was at RU. Odd thing is my best friends girl friend worked there but can't say I remember ever meeting him. But my memory sucks, so who knows.

Journalism is as dead as statesmanship and putting the nation first. Come on guys.. how many of you actually saw the debate and aren't voicing opinions based on the recaps in the media?

Cruz was right. Those questions were a bunch of sensationalists crap based on "the horse race". As is 99% of what gets reported.. which are stories based on polls. For the mass of people who get their information this way, the only thing they know about the candidates is what their poll numbers are instead of information on issues that might actually MOVE those same polls.

On the moderators side of things, the very first question they asked (oddly, what are your weaknesses), the first person they asked did not even try to answer and launched into a speech. They should have put a stop to that. They need the ability to turn off microphones and play a waugh-waugh sound over them when they do not answer the question.

I'd love to see these guys show up for a debate and instead, Alex Trebek walks out and tells them what is actually going to happen is a game of jeopardy based on US Law and History and Geography and World Events.

Pretty sure statesmanship and putting the nation first died with the founding fathers. There's been the occasional blip on the radar of some anomaly (maybe TR? Lincoln? sure there are some other obscure folks in history I'm unaware of,) but for the most part we've been screwed in that regard for going on 200 years.
