March 6, 1976 RU 70-67 Win over St. John's in the ECAC Final at MSG. This was the game where Phil sellers carried RU and Beaver Smith carried the Johnnies over about the last 4 minutes. After checking the microfilm in the Star Ledger at the Elizabeth Library today I found out that this game was televised live on NBC Channel 4 at 3 PM.

March 16, 1979 St. John's defeated us in the NCAA at Greensboro, North Carolina 67-65 when Tim McCoy scored a basket in the last few seconds. We had defeated St. John's twice earlier in the season. I found out that this game was televised live on Channel 11 at 10 PM.

March 18, 1983. Our last Win in an NCAA game when we defeated SW Louisiana 60-53 in Hartford. The game was live only on radio at 9:30 PM. The next day, I found out that this game was shown the following morning March 19, 1983 on ESPN at 8 AM in the morning. Roy Hinson had a groin injury (that he had early in the season) return a couple days before this game in practice. Early in the game he sprained an ankle. He sat a lot and had his lowest game of the season with 6 points and 2 rebounds. He also had 3 fouls in the first half and got his fourth just 59 seconds into the second half. He didn't return until just over 5 minutes remained.

March 20, 1983 In Hartford we lost to St. John's 65-56 in the NCAA as Chris Mullins as a soph had an outstanding game. We only trailed by one point at the half. Tom Young wasn't even sure if Hinson would play but he felt slightly better with both his groin and his ankle. He did score 10 points I think on 5-9 shooting with I believe 8 rebounds. I found out that this game was televised live on Channel 2 CBS at 4 PM.

As you can see all 4 of these games were televised so hopefully someone will come forth for each of these games having a tape of these games. They definitely should exist somewhere. I did write to St. John's today asking about the 1976 and the 1979 games.

If anyone could provide a copy of any of these four games I would be most appreciative.

My Dad and I had tickets to the RU-SW Louisiana game in Hartford, and were driving up. There was a MAJOR, multi-car accident on whatever highway we were on (93, maybe? 84?) ... and I mean major, like at least 4-5 cars, maybe more. We could actually SEE the police and ambulance lights - the accident occurred no more than 300-400 yards in front of us. The highway was closed for 2-3 hours, and we missed the game, listening to it on the radio in the car, 1st sitting in the traffic while the highway was closed, then after a while, we turned around and drove back listening to the game.

Had we been 5 minutes earlier, we would have been past the spot of the accident, and at the game. Had we been 1-2 minutes earlier we might have been caught IN the accident. Had we been 15-20 minutes later, we could have exited off that highway and found another path to Hartford.

I attended the SW Louisiana game in an awful rainy night. I saw the earlier game of the DH as well. I had a blowout with a tire on the way home. I returned on Sunday March 20 and saw the Johnnies defeat us by 9 when Mullin was hitting from all over the court. I am glad that I did get to see our last NCAA win.

I was also at that game. I believe Young went to a zone in second half when Hinson was hurt. Kevin Black i believe had a big game that day. Hard to believe it was Reagan who was President when we had our last win.

Having been at all but 10-15 games at the RAC in its first nearly 30 years, thar eruption during the second half after three straight turnovers for baskets remains the loudest the RAC ever has been

I broadcast that 1976 game on WRSU from MSG. It was electric in the Garden, a precursor to what the Big East Finals would be like shortly thereafter. It was the final round of a heavyweight fight those last 4-5 minutes going back and forth. Sellers took the team on his shoulders and said "follow me".

That would be a nice game to see again.I totally agree. I just remember Mike Dabney grabbing the rebound when Pete Malloy missed the first shot of a one in one and just held the ball for dear life until the horn went off.Tom Young had called a time out to ice him and he missed. I think he was hitting like 90% on the season.

I'd like to see vs. #6 WVU in 1982. I think that one was on CBS regionally that day, but I'm not sure. I was there, so the highlights only exist in my mind.

Do you think WRSU would still have the audio archived or is that way too long ago? I wouldn't mind hearing that.

Everything on WRSU was on tape then, not digitized, so I have no clue. I have a copy of the infamous LP highlight album "Run, Rutgers, Run" with snippets from the entire season, including the Pete Malloy missed FT (it's my voice on that call in the album). I don't remember how much of the St. John's game is there. Probably should have it transferred to a CD at some point.

I attended this game, too. What an atmosphere! The student section was filled more than a half-hour before tip-off. RU dominated from the start. Unfortunately, it was not televised. The following season, when WVU visited the RAC, it was televised regionally by CBS. We lost that game. Gary Bender and Billy Packer were the announcers.

Funny story about that exact moment....

Pete Carrill used to live in Plainsboro (where I live) and I saw him at the bagel store in town on a weekend morning, of course wearing a RU hoodie. I knew exactly who he was ...so I
Went up and said hello and chatted with him about a few Rutgers / princeton things (like the December 78'game where he and his bench got three straight Technical fouls...)

Very engaging guy

Anyhow, I go to him. "I bet i can make you ruin your appetite for that bagel with the words ..Pete Malloy".

His scowl was priceless .....

we had played Princeton earlier in the season, and if I remember correctly that game was a nailbiter with RU pulling away late.... it was almost impossible to build up a big lead on Princeton, they took such good care of the ball on offense, and would always be a threat for the back door.

anyway, I was really nervous the first game, but for some reason I was not so nervous for the tourney game......which I should have been...maybe because we had beaten them before, but it was a confidence not well placed....we did survive

Yes, we defeated them in Princeton in game #13 by the score of 65-52. It was a nail biter until we stole the ball and either Eddie Jordan or Mike Dabney made a layup with about 7 minutes left. We than gradually opened up the lead. That was the first game I I saved an article on and glued it into a scrapbook. I than saved articles on every game for the rest of the season plus our trip to Rome after the season. Before the game I was only saving the box scores. I still have the scrapbook and often look back at it.
