Our Most talented recruit in 20 years...

Athleticism isn't everything. Look at teams that go far. I am optimistic about Sanders as well, but just being an athlete isn't going to take him to 10ppg his freshman year.Gotta make sure he can play defense and distribute, too.

I know very little about Sanders but I saw a lot of Quincy Douby who was one of the few Rutgers players that actually scared opponents because of his offensive skills that are still being shown in China.

I think Cs will perform. I just don't like putting high expectations on someone who hasn't played against D1 competition. I am excited nonetheless.

He is good at defense, trust me, I have seen plenty. Uses his court awareness that makes him a good PG to also get alot of steals.

But its his handle thats borderline inhuman. There was one play I saw where two 5 star players trapped him and he dribbled through them like they were cardboard cutouts. Anyone who presses us will be just handing us points.

Thanks for the line,Brian. Any info regarding any players of late?

Seels, that's good to hear. D1 level will be different, but I hear you. He is very skilled from a ball handling stand point, but it's much easier to give a pass. Hopefully it will turn into many easy points.

Guard defense is huge. Contain guards, you contain the whole offense.

already fans are heaping expectations on a player before they have dribbled in a game for RU. We have gone through this before with highly recruited talented players...proceed with caution says the ghosts of Mike, Herve, Wally, Walliy, Corey, Greg, Kadeem,

Glad to see the positive vibes Corey is bringing to RU MBB fans.
We've been surrounded in darkness too long and even only one ray of light is welcome ( even if it's just speculation) , the way I look at it

I also worry about the expectations that are being piled on here...

Not making any claims about Corey here, but the one difference between Corey and all the names you listed is that Corey is a true point guard. We haven't had a true point here in many many years.

Let's see how this plays out, very hopeful.

You don't want to heap expectations on a kid that has not yet played.....BUT, you had no problem bashing Goode and the now transferred Ryan Johnson before they had dribbled in a game for RU even though the reports of their progress was very good.

It's Okay to be a negative cancer who only posts when there is a hint of negative news........just don't have any positive thoughts.

the realist in me asks....if this guys is so good why weren't other top (attractive) schools interested. It isn't like he chose Rutgers over Duke, Indiana, Ohio State, Villanova, UNC or Syracuse.

I think a lot of teams were turned off by his antics. Dancing on a court, staring people down. From what I see though, he is a good kid. Just high energy, highly competitive. To some coaches though, they don' want to deal with that.

Simply, there were a lot of concerns regarding his eligibility and his on-court demeanor so the blue bloods stayed away. They can pick and choose from the best fish in the barrel. They didn't want to spend time recruiting a kid who was not picture perfect.

A fair point. It should also be pointed out that none of the big schools recruited Steph Curry or Klay Thompson, either.

I mean, Michigan, Miami, Memphis, UT, Xavier aren't slouches in bball. IMO. very happy that Corey is coming here. my mom's whole side of the family lives in the orlando area about two miles from Dr. Phillips, so I have gone to a couple of their games. let me tell you, we are going to be very pleased with Laurent. once he gets his weight up thru our s&c program, this kid will be a very solid contributor in my opinion. good get by Eddie.

Nysports, I also agree. I think Laurent has a lot of potential and skill.Attacks,attacks-open up people. Let's each donate him five pounds and let him rip.

Bright future for that kid. Also for Sanders.

FIG.....always looking for something negative...like clockwork...lol

I agree, if you follow his twitter you will see that essentially all the people that he talks crap to on the court he is good friends with off the court.

And to answer the other question about pressure, he wants the pressure put on him. He wants to be the man. This is different than just thinking you are the man. I feel this has happened to a few of the blue chippers we have had in the past (not mentioning names). And furthermore, which is super important, the people he listens to don't just tell him how great he is they push him to be better. Check out the video below:

I think Duke and specifically Syracuse has missed on more recruits in the last 3 years than I can recall.....BJ Johnson, transferred out, Robeson was not playing much for a lot of this past season and they just didn't develop the kids as much would think, based on their reputation. Sanders would assuredly play at any of the schools that didn't offer, but as has been mentioned here, Sanders is electric, but for some "old timers", his showmanship type antics are going to turn people off at times.

As far as the expectations are concerned, we've seen absurd expectations placed on local recruits out of Phila (Rysheed Jordan) and NYC (Whitehead) and neither has the athletic ability of Sanders. What all 3 kids have are skill sets that eventually need to be matched with hoops intelligence and playing in game situations that are not in an up and down setting.

RU doesn't have a chance to be choosy, Sanders immediately improves RU on both ends of the floor, but I don't think this is a scenario where expectations are the issue. Sanders will have a chance to learn on the job and play through mistakes that an elite program would probably not want to see. I compare him to the kid Payton that was a lottery pick of the Orlando Magic last year, that went to Louisiana Lafayette.....yep, Lafayette.....a kid who played a ton of minutes at a mid-major, played through mistakes at a level where the spotlight isn't on him or the program and gets to the basket like nobody's business.

Sanders is not being asked to elevate the program or lead, RU is far from that aspect. It needs a personality injection and reason to watch games. I am leaning towards not knowing what or whether these antics or showboat items are a sticking point, RU needs to get players that can get RU on a path of a winning season and you can't get there without athletes.

Whether Eddie hits a homerun on every targeted recruit of not, isn't my concern....he promised that RU lacked athletes to compete and he's targeted length, strength or kids that have in most instances, raised the upside physically. Sanders is a complete blur athletically and raises the tempo on what kids should be able to score in transition, as they also are a little stronger than what we are used to seeing out of freshman or JUCO's in years past.

Sanders is likely a jump shot away from being extremely dangerous, but having him at RU for 3 or 4 years isn't a bad problem to have. if he's "too good" too soon, he's bound to leave for the next level, so take the expectations with a grain of salt, they are always higher than they should be. Ideally, he's not better than advertised, because RU needs him here longer than him being here for a just a short period of time.

Seels, no one on this form knows what Sanders can handle. None of us know him personally. What he projects might not be what he feels. I am just saying.

Hawk, I can't wait for Sanders. I would love to see him here for 4 years. I hesitate to put expectations on kids like Sanders. Great kid, but comes from a tough area and barely has a mom or dad. I would be thrilled to see him play defense, take 8 points, and limit turnovers. Freshman are prone to freshman mistakes. Look at SHU's guard last year. Isiah whitehead. Turned it over too much to be effective.

Seems like we're going to Florida a lot for both football and basketball recruits.

Florida is now the 3rd most populated state in the nation...and the state is pumping out almost record number recruits in various sports each and every year.

Smart to go where some of the largest, let alone, talented recruiting bases to target.

Plus, can't hurt that so many "Yankees" with Northeast ties live in FLA...(plus have relatives in the NE), which sometimes helps too as many FLA residents are familiar to what NJ/NYC/RU have to offer.

Yeah, because many of their student athletes and their supporters see the value in going to RU whereas alot of NJ's finest don't see it and think they are too good for RU.
Anybody from anywhere who sees the value of RU is welcome IMHO.

I am starting to think the whole "keep people local" debate is far fetched. I no longer care if NJ players stay here or not. It shouldn't be a goal.

Just bring in kids that can reach .500. If there is not one NJ kid on the roster that is fine.

UNC won their first bball championship with a bunch of guys from NYC and NJ even. Gotta bring in the guys/gals that really want to be here.

Mountie, agree with both of your points and to be honest, i hope our whole team bball and football is from florida, half joking but half serious. As someone who has lived in both states, FL kids want to get out of Florida, leave Orlando/Jacksonville/Tampa/Miami bubbles and move up north. And a lot of athletes from that area have helped RU in the past and will continue to in the future in both of our major sports. When the Jersey kids don't want to stay home, keep going to florida. have no issues with it whatsoever, i can't begrudge jersey kids who don't want to stay home or see the merit in staying home for RU because I'm sure their support systems around them view RU negatively. The FL kids don't see it that way, and that is what i love about it. RU nationwide, always is looked at in a different light than here in NJ, its actually refreshing if you go out of state with an R shirt on.

The biggest myth is recruiting your borders.....or your own state.....this is the next generation of kids and those old skool models and the electronic universe we live in matters most.....get Sanders or Laurent or whomever wants to be here and get it over with. You don't get more points for recruiting locally if you are not winning enough games.

Yeah, people who say "We live in the basketball hotbed, how are we bad" have to think for a second.

Stop chasing 4-5 stars in our state just because they are right here. Until we become respectable, it's wasted time. Florida get's pretty darn humid a good portion of the year so I understand why they want to come here.

Good post...and I think one major reason why so many FL kids want to go "out-of-state" (i.e. some to RU) is that unlike most people in NJ...FLA is so transient...most families haven't lived in FLA for even one generation (let alone 2 or 3 or more)...and as I mentioned in a previous post, so many families in FLA came from the Northeast so there is a natural draw to "go back home" and/or go to school where they have families members nearby.

When student-athletes (or regular students who earn scholarship offers) are given a free ride to attend schools out-of-state, out-of-region, etc...many will look at that as a positive to try something new.

For others...the draw is to stay closer to home.

I don't think RU has a "weather advantage"...as for most 17-18 yr old kids...they "manage".

Every location has positives/negatives for weather...and for basketball players (winter sport), walking to practice on-campus in below freezing temps all bundled up or walking in shorts/sandals at a location down south...not sure it matters to some, or even most.

Can't recall hearing any basketball recruit complaining about humidity in the off-season (summer), but it could matter to a few...but I don't think Eddie is using "humidity" as a recruiting tool.

please take your current events board police schtick somewhere else. I didn't bash Goode or Johnson. I said that they are players not at Big 10 level or do we live in your kumbaya socialist liberal world where everyone has the same skills.

Just be happy that we have the talent of a kid like Sanders and there is potential there and the team has more depth and we might finally get some semblance of team ball. Expecting saviors is another thing.

Thanks for the advice Mr. Negative. Are you still upset that Jordan, Shoes and Macon are doing a pretty good job getting players? Which means your savior, Danny Hurley won't get hired here any time soon. I still remember you being the guy who claimed that Jordan would be asked to leave after a horrible season next year and Danny Hurley would be the next coach. You even had the nerve to post it as if it was a done deal.

Mr. Negative, the guy who goes weeks without posting....then comes back when Johnson transferred just to drop in a negative comment.

Mr. Negative seems to keep coming back to the RAC to watch Rutgers basketball, unless it snows. Keeps renewing...one of the best fans we have.
