With Flood pretty much saying Laviano is the guy, I looked at the stats for both players to try and see why this is the case.
First, comparing one guy to the other is really difficult since Rettig has only played the first half of the cupcake opener and the very end of OSU game when they had taken a lot of their players out. Laviano has clearly had the harder job against the opponent's first stringers.
But, I am still having a difficult time in trying to figure out why Flood doesn't think Rettig deserves more of a chance to really see what he can do. We certainly can more clearly judge Laviano's body of work at this point.
One very important point to ponder is that only Laviano has had the advantage of Carroo to throw to. Remember that the entire first half of the first game he was suspended and he was on the sidelines when Rettig came into the last game. This is really huge in my eyes as we can all agree that he is our best receiver and makes it a lot easier for our other guys to get open when he is on the field. He also has 9 of Laviano's 12TDs.
Here are the stats for both according to ESPN:
Laviano is 125/186 (67%) with 12TD, 7ints, 12 sacks Rating: 148.9
Rettig is 12/18 (67%) with 2TD, 0ints, 0 sacks Rating: 188.3
Some will say that under the circumstances, I am trying to compare apples to oranges and they would have a good point. But, both QB's can only deal with what is in front of them and I think Rettig has shown that if he is given the chance, he can also deliver.
