I usually don’t listen because I am either watching the game one way or the other . But yesterday had to do some driving and listened on the radio - it was brutal . I only listened part of the second and third quarters . So maybe other parts of the game were better.

Here were some lowlights ;
Big pass down the field . Carlin starts screaming big play to KJ duff. Duff!!
Then legrand starts gushing about duff again . He’s coming along and made a great play. Then some silence …Carlin : oh we just got word from Fooch it was not duff on the catch, it was Ian Strong ! Fooch can see it better since he’s on the field. Yikes !

Minnesota has the ball at the rutgers 17….Carlin : there is a pass in the flat to Minnesota RB and he walks in for the touchdown . Wait this is a radio. I am not watching it . Carlin tell listener what happened between the 17 and endzone

End of first half . Rutgers has the ball . No or little mention of how many timeouts Minnesota has left , as this affects rutgers strategy.

Third quarter . Minnesota completed an 8 or 9 yard pass - wasn’t sure exactly. Rutgers is flagged for defensive holding. The penalty is 10 yards. Teel says Minnesota should decline the pentalty to get their quarterback credit for the passing yards. Because he’s a former QB and that’s what he would want. Of course , Minnesota wants the yards and accepts the penalty . Yikes !

Not much analyzing legrand and teel. There was a possession where Rutgers threw the ball every play. Legrand said “I can’t remember a run on this drive “. Tell the listener why they are throwing it every play does the defense have 8 guys in the box ? Is it because Kyle isn’t playing ?
I didn’t understand this - tell the listener why !

Listen I don’t expect some great broadcast . I get it that it’s not Bob Poppa and Carl banks . But it shouldn’t sound like I am tuning into the Piscataway high school station to listen to the JV soccer game.

Hopefully this crew will understand the listener isn’t watching the game . We need to know the score, timeouts , where the ball is and give us the right guy who made the play.

Agree the radio guys can do a better job. I listen quite a bit because I am an Uber driver for three kids most Saturdays. Sometimes I think, "did I miss something," when the reality is something happened in the game and it just wasn't described well.

In the fourth quarter, the commentators repeatedly identified penalties when they saw flags, only for the actual penalties to be totally unrelated to what the commentators said. One time, Carlin said the penalty was an offensive hold in the end zone, making for a safety. Julian didn't know what the rule was so didn't know whether it was a safety. Turns out penalty had nothing to do with an offensive hold, was something different. Carlin and Julian agreed not to predict penalties anymore after admitting they go so many wrong. It was amusing.

Good news is they play the post-game Schiano interview.

Yesterday, I watched the first 3 quarters on TV. The commentators there aren't much better than WFAN. NBC's lead guy was Jay Collingsworth who is only 29 so I guess Rutgers fans are stuck with him for the next 30 or 40 years.

Carlin is absolutely horrible. I’m sorry. It’s a hard listen and gives very little details, and screams are cringe worthy. Mistakes notwithstanding, it’s the voice and delivery. Him and Joe Nolan no bueno… throw the basketball announcer at JMA in there too, sick of his antics.

hate to pile on but had to listen via radio and agree it was awful

I don’t think you’re piling on
I know Carlin checks in here sometimes . I am sure in his business he has heard worse from Executives, callers etc . Its just constructive criticism

My radio booth/team:

Tom McCarthy on play by play

One or two of: Ray Lucas/Tim Pernetti/JPO for color commentary. All bring something. There are others too who aren’t bad…DL from Sayreville, can’t remember his name. He wasn’t bad. Scott Brunner wasn’t bad either way back when.

Eric LeGrand always.

Chris Carlin for sideline reporting.

IDK, it is what it is. EL does a lot of nice fill comments and defensive analysis. Mike Teel was absolutely joking about the QB yards, maybe the self-anointed legend needs a sarcasm meter.

I listen while I am live at the game to drown out the brah party blasting over the stadium sound system since you can't hear the announcer announcing who made the plays. As far as Duff and Strong, they are #8 and #9, respectively. Depending on one's vantage point, the numbers can get mixed up, nothing to get overly critical about, but I guess since Rutgers won, fans have to find something else to complain about.

I don't like when radio guys leave out details that help paint the picture, such as did the play go to the left, right, or up the middle? How many yards were gained? On a pass, how far downfield was the ball thrown? Etc.

they’re small time, unprofessional homer hacks who didn’t get their jobs based on performance and ability.

This is the same nonsense complaint as the concessions staff being too slow and getting orders wrong.

C’mon now. If they’re accurate on which team has the ball, count your blessings.

Ha - I love the enthusiasm and will take that alone any day over Matt Millen or some lady from BTN doing color.

If you don’t want Homer hacks listen to the away broadcast. You can listen to them gush over their team instead.

You lost me after you said "I usually don't listen". So you are taking the 10 minutes of something you never listen to and coming up with an opinion. That make complete sense. Also, I am sure from your seat you can identify all the players numbers on the fly. Lol.

Nevertheless, go listen to 10 min of other teams broadcast on SiriusXM and you will realize our broadcast team is first class and very knowledgeable.

Just was giving my opinion on the broadcast . Did you listen ? Did you think it was a good broadcast ?

Teel was joking after he botched the analysis. I think he thought it was a 5 yard penalty like in the NFL. Then he covered it with a joke.

Unbelievable, that you think a fan doesn’t have the right to have an opinion on the broadcast. If I thought it was great - I would say it . Just like I think popppa-banks are usually excellent.

Point is the numbers are similar, not 8 vs 30. Glad she taught you well.

this too

2nd game I've listened to and don't enjoy it

Sorry to disappoint - way over 30k.

Posters who want to rag on attendance over the top.

For a team in the midst of a losing streak and no wins since September was a nice crowd and better than many years.

Some fans always want to jump on attendance. Been to many schools and many road trips. RU is not easy logistically. Deal with it. And Noon starts never helps.

Many love Carlin, and I a lot of people enjoy the broadcast. But I find him very hard to listen to as well. I complained to myself the exact same thing, that he thinks we are watching on TV and listening to the radio. This has been the case for many years. The worst is when he is in hyper mode after a big play and I'd be like What happened!? Only to find out it was like a 6 yard gain lol. For me Bruce Johnson was better, could visualize exactly what was happening. Down and distance, yards gained on the play, to what yard line etc. The color analysts I didn't mind, they add interesting insight.

Okay, big question about the radio broadcast: can you hear: "AND IT'S THI-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D D-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-N!!!"

No …but you hear Carlin and he calls a play . Say it’s a good play for Minnesota …then you hear the crowd cheer …and much delayed you hear Carlin “oh and there is a flag on the play “
So you’re waiting to hear why the Rutgers crowd is cheering

WFAN-FM is on about a 20 second delay from the field action.
Yesterday,I watched with my radio off, putting it on only after a big play.
WCBS-AM has that same issue.
I surprised Howie Rose with that last year, riding with him in an elevator at Citi Field following a game.

You are making a mountain out of molehill.
As to your second point, sure, you are welcome to your opinion, and other fans are welcome to different opinions than yours and opinions on your opinions, and you are welcome to opinions on their opinions on your opinions. Isn't that what this board is for?

Thre

you’re being interesting intentionally obtuse. They were there for a chunk of the game
It was a 1 score game and I could literally count the number of students in that section. Loved that they gave the TV away in a different section at the end.

It’s not a mountain . Just an opinion on the broadcast, which we are welcome to have like you say .
What did you think of the radio broadcast ?

It did seem a little "off" compared to other games the crew has handled, however, the volume from the scoreboard was so loud yesterday, I could barely hear the radio with an earplug shoved in my ear. I get that some people are not a fan of Carlin. He's a homer announcer. Having listened to the broadcasts of the VT and Nebraska announcers, Rutgers is about on par with theirs, but I will say the Nebraska announcing crew was superb.

I liked Ray Lucas on the broadcast, but Teel does provide some very good insight and analysis. Yesterday was not his best day.
