Pac12 dissolution discussion

Very surprised that Louisville isn’t on the list as they’ve invested a ton of $$ into athletics the past few years

Between papa Johns massive donor, new refurbished fb stadium, the Yum Center, etc
Less about what they've invested and more about where would those birds land? The B10 and the SEC won't want Louisville.

I'm still skeptical about some of those names and definitive landing spots in the SEC or B10 for all those names but at least I can see VA/NC/FL markets being possibly attractive. Also no GT, which I didn't think was all that attractive despite being in GA.

So so academics and a natural travel partner for Cincy & WVU

That’s a wash with the ACC. Money isn’t all that different and the penalties would be high. I’ve said before, by the time the next B12 tv deal comes around I’d look towards UCF and WVU if I’m the ACC. They are a better geographic fit in the ACC. It’s not the same caliber of schools as those that will leave but it softens the blow a little. It would all depend on how many schools actually leave the ACC. I still wonder about 7 actual landing spots between the B10 and SEC.

Despite these 7 names out there, bottom line is they still have no definitive course of action or plan to do anything except create bluster.

Not seeing infective for UCF / wvu to join Acc as $ is similar and I assume they’d then be bogged down by the GOR

Re. the 7 schools above, one of the theories I’ve heard is them joining together to challenge the GOR, as opposed to each school going at it alone

BC, Cuse & Wake have zero incentive to do anything

I’d love to be a fly on the wall for this weeks league meetings in Amelia Island

ACC should be proactive, take the losses and rebuild now. They need to be proactive and get creative if they want to surivive long-term

you and me both

can you imagine the tension????

BC, Wake, Sarah, UVA, NC State, GT, Duke, UL have zero incentive to do anything really

It would be similar money but the geography would be better. Also I’m not talking about now but close to when the B12 tv deal will expire in 2030. GOR won’t be issue at that time.

I heard a rumor that Darrell Sweeney is not showing up because he is on vacation with his family, not sure if it is true, but that would be crazy to have the league champs coach pull a no show

Ahh gotcha

Agree Geography would def be better and would make more sense travel wise

I get BC, Cuse and wake having no infective but what about ville and nc state?

They both have pretty decent athletics histories and have invested a good amount of $ into bb and fb

I would think that they both would have a vested interest and getting out of the conference due to the fear of falling so far behind the Big Ten in the SEC that it would cripple their respective athletic departments

I wouldn’t take the losses now, it’s too early. Closer to the GOR expiration sure but not now. The end game is the end game and nothing will really change that but it doesn’t mean you have to relent now.

If anything use that suggestion of UCF, WVU, maybe UConn as a trading chip. Approve any additions, take a smaller revenue share while the new additions get a bigger share and leave 2-4 years early. Leaving 10+ years early is a non starter imo. .

Exactly what I was saying, are there really 7 landing spots available in the SEC and B10?

Dear BC, Syracuse, Pitt, VT, L'Ville, and Miami:

Here's to your HUNGER GAMES!

Exactly what I was saying about, are there really 7 landing sports available in the SEC and B10?

I would say no, but will defer to others on the exact amount / landing spots

Outside of the Big 3 being a given (Noles, clemmy & heels), I assume some of the others will go to the big 12

I thought Virginia was a given as well for either the B1G or SEC, but 95 as indicated otherwise, and that they are actually content being in the ACC for now

Additionally, I’ve heard the number is eight that is needed in order to avoid the GOR (Schools that need to breakaway)

Nothing we don’t know already. Still think more will come from the west regardless of what’s done in the east. It actually makes it more imperative. If you lurch more to the east, you’d be putting USC/UCLA even further out on the island.

From the article :

If Florida State, Clemson, Virginia, North Carolina and Miami were to become available, that’s a real and major domino to fall in conference realignment. As one Big Ten source put it, “Those schools are where the real value is.”

That person was particularly interested in Virginia and North Carolina as new states and/or markets for the Big Ten to extend down the East Coast. This Big Ten source believes expansion out East makes far more sense than expanding into the Pacific Northwest, which has not had nearly enough support internally or among the league’s media partners since the idea was first broached.

Again only landing spots for a few, so not sure why some schools are in that group of 7. Actually, thinking about it maybe it's a way in for some of them to get in on the strategy or plan of schools like FSU/Clemson etc..sort of ACC double agents lol. Can't really think of any other "rational" reason hah.

Hale is solid and penned this gem a few years ago

Absent of the whole “Jimbo was still recruiting after the Bama game” angle, I thought the article, though nauseating, was fairly accurate

Bobby Bowden acknowledging that FSU passed on joining the SEC years ago brings back memories of Fred Grunninger passing on the BE a couple of times. Also, perhaps the ACC should see if John Swofford is still around and available for a consult regarding their next steps. He was thought to be a proactive genius in these matters when raiding the BE and screwing the clueless Tranghese and Marinatto. Unfortunately (not really) his legacy will be forever tarnished by the long term ESPN deal.

Since this 7 school group in the rumor talks about two conferences taking them, how does that happen without some coordination, which would totally open the whole thing to collusion charges by the left behinds?

Why would the B1G and SEC get mixed up in something that could end up in a big court battle? Each of those conferences already has half a dozen schools with a higher stature than anything they would get from the ACC.

Curious who the half dozen schools in each conference that would be that have higher stature than FSU

B1G
Michigan
Ohio State
USC (probable)
*** Penn State (debateable)

SEC
Bama
Georgia
Texas
LSU (probable)
*** UF / Tennessee / Oklahoma (debateable)

Those are my best guesses

Considering this is 2023 and not 1999, I would add Wisconsin, Iowa, and Auburn to your list, and you gave me a good laugh with your idea that it is debatable whether Penn St and Oklahoma are in a level with Florida State.

Lol stop man

Wiscy and Iowa are not on FSU’s level

Auburn… I’ll be gracious and give that a push, and that’s being very generous

I think most non-biased pundits would rate FSU, Boomer and the Nitts pretty comparable with one another

Boomer odviously has the most history, while the Nitts will be forever scarred from the Sandusky scandal

Not sure what your metric is re. statute - if it’s nattys & heismans, FSU has more than PSU, though Oklahoma trumps both

If it’s stadium size, PSU takes the cake

If it’s national brand, FSU comfortably sits ahead of both Oklahoma & PSU

Auburn, Iowa and Wisconsin are all solid programs - and Auburn has had the most historic, and recent, success

But none of those 3, and in particular, Iowa and Wiscy, are anywhere near FSU in statute

It’s becoming obvious that the more powerful schools in the ACC realize they have no out, and are trying to bluff the other schools into considering unequal revenue sharing.

If there really was an out, there wouldn’t be all of this talk.
Truth be told, there’s really no incentive for Wake / BC etc to agree to unequal revenue sharing

They know the big boys of the league are unhappy, and are actively looking to exit

Why would they agree to this? They’ve been getting the milk for free all the years off the backs of fsu / Clemson / unc

Why would they want to chenge that now?

More importantly, why on earth has it taken so long for the big boys of the league to wake up and realize they’re getting hosed?

The problem is that beyond the ACC schools that are in obvious trouble if the conference dissolves (like BC, Syracuse, Wake), there are a bunch that cannot be 100% sure they will be included as a B12 addition.

Only the ones that know they are likely SEC or B1G additions (FSU, Clemson, UNC, Virginia) can be real comfortable that they will find a good home. So, since the difference between current ACC and new B12 revenue isn’t that great, it doesn’t make sense for a lot of the schools to force an ACC blowup.
What I find funny is that some people will complain about NIL $$$ ruining college athletic. But they don’t complain about these super conferences ruining athletics. It all about the same thing, $$$$$. Best believe if this goes through the NIL $$$ will increase, where would that leave us?

There’s really no incentive for unequal revenue share unless they extend the GOR even longer lol. These schools are going to leave anyway when they can. Why reduce your share now when they’re going to leave in the future anyway. What’s the point of the sacrifice unless you’re getting something in return.

Besides unequal revenue share still won’t come anywhere near the gap of 30-40M.

For the lower status schools I’d just do something similar to what CBS did with their sweetheart SEC GOTW tv deal. Ride it til the end and then deal with the fallout when the time comes. Only amendment to that is in this situation you don’t have to ride it til the very end but just near the end and then leverage a slightly early release for something. My suggestion is getting help in the transition to add additional teams like UCF, WVU, maybe UConn Cincy etc when the B12 tv deal is near expiration…give up some revenue to those schools as they enter and maybe 1-2 years as “one big ACC” and then the departing schools leave say 2-4 years early.

You are caught in the past. Florida St just isn’t that important.

Ratings, recent history and rankings (recruiting and Top 10) would say otherwise
FSU is one of the iconic brands of college football

They won the natty in 2013 (and another Heisman), and made the playoffs in 2014
Their ratings are sky high

Preseason top 10 is a given, top 5 is a possibility
NIL collective is extremely strong

Recruiting is solid
Nobody has mastered the portal like Mike

You literally listed Iowa and Wisconsin as peers. That alone nearly made me fall out of my chair in laughter

If you'd have said Nebraska, I might have taken you half seriously

10 years ago is ancient history.

Those B1G schools have been more relevant to cfb because they have been good while playing other prominent teams.

Florida State has become an afterthought because they haven’t been good and for the most part have a schedule comprised of teams no one cares about.

Ancient history? 2/10 on the troll level
Besides Ohio State....who from the B1G has been consistently elite?

Michigan recently has been elite, before that were rather pedestrian for their standards

Iowa? Wiscy? Nebby? Nitts?
Who exactly has been consistenly "good" from the B1G ?

By your thought process, Ohio State last won the natty in 2014... would you consider them "acient history?"

The Noles decline began in 2017, shortly after the Bama game. Going in, they were ranked 3rd.

There's trolling, then there's Al level trolling
This is right up there with Al's level

you're wrong

I'm a fsu fan, wanted to play baseball there and follow them but fsu hasn't been relevant since I was a kid, UF too. The past doesn't matter any longer, it's now about eyeballs and eyeballs alone....hence RU

I also don't think FSU will do well in the B1G as the style of play and weather is going to beat those candy asses up :):):)

You could argue, UF hasn’t been relevant since Tebow, and to a certain extent you could argue FSU hasn’t been relevant since Jameis (although they did make the playoffs in 2014 as well as had the number three ranking in 2017)

Their ratings are still through the roof.

The Notre Dame game 2 years ago, the LSU game last year, etc;

And this is coming off of the end of the jimbo/Willie Taggart era, which was a complete abomination in every imaginable way

Whether they would do well in the big 10 is up for debate, as it’s certainly a more difficult conference than the ACC

I think perinially they’d be better in the Big Ten then the SEC, as the SEC top to bottom traditionally, has better teams, and more power houses, while the Big Ten stacked at the top, and the mid-level teams appear to rotate in and out on what seems to be yearly basis

I like Wisconsin. Barry Alverez put them on the map and they’ve been a consistent top 25 team since I’ve been a kid.

Multiple rose bowls, strong, stable of running backs, big fan base, 2 Heismans etc.

But respectfully to them, they are not on the level of FSU stature
