Per source: Drew mehringer out as OC

Woah. We have had zero stability at OC. Will be interesting to see how quickly/what plan is to replace...

This was rumored for the last few days.

So far some of the 4 stars have already tweeted that they are still committed.

He was a great recruiter but maybe not quite ready to be OC. He should do well at Texas.

Good luck to him.

Now we have to see who will replace him.

If true, then I can only hope it's an opportunity for Coach Ash to bring in an established OC from a rising program. It would keep the recruiting momentum and give Coach Ash a sounding board from someone who has seen this rodeo a few times in his career.

Mehringer was a good recruiter and the kids really seemed to like him. He was not a good offensive coordinator. However, we need to find someone who could run the power spread and run it effectively. I don't know why Mehringer would leave being a position coach, to an offensive coordinator, to go back to being a position coach. Unless Texas paid him substantially more money. Which could easily be the case. Either that or he was pushed out.

Guy, 90% of the coaches out there would leave for a job at Texas, like it or not.
The 10%:

He and Hermann were really tight.

Does an awful job and flees. Nice! So loyal to Ash who gave him the biggest break of all time. I would have rather Ash demote him as he did seem like a good recruiter but don't let the door hit him on the way out.

Bad hire from day one. Lot of people on this board have some significant apologizing to do and crow to eat.

Hope Ash brings someone with real D1 experience, ala, The Fridge.

I think it might actually help recruiting. He had a miserable offense last year .

Don't underestimate his ability to connect with recruits. Despite a dreadful year offensively, his younth and enthusiasm I thought was refreshing. Wouldn't doubt he taught the coaches how to post gifs on twitter.

Mehringer is a prodigy. Hopefully not a big loss...

While I don't think that changing the OC every year is a recipe for success, our offense was historically bad this past season and IMO a change was needed.
Now, how about the special teams coach ?

Well time to move on. We did have a pretty bad offense this year. Hopefully it won't hurt recruiting. If we get a top name OC then it looks like a step up. We are probably locked into a spread offense now, if for nothing else for continuity's sake with our current players and offensive recruits. The new OC is a key hire that could catapult us forward and help retain recruits. Choose wisely Coach Ash and please don't limit your selection to those you worked with in the past, like Kyle Flood did when he first took over.

I don't disagree with your first sentence, but I LOL'd at the last one. Hope he spent more time on offensive schemes and teaching his players and position coaches how to implement his schemes.

Giving up an OC position at a P5 program for an up and coming HC to become a position coach speaks volumes.

Follow the money (OC vs WR) and draw your own conclusions.

Will Rutgers stay with the spread offense concept or will the new OC modify the offensive strategy with Ash approval.

Interesting

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Holy crap... did NOT see this coming.

I hope we hav something in place because the longer we wait, the bgger risk we run hanging on to recruits.

Yeah uhm this is NOT a "crow-eating" scenario. He left for Texas, didn't get fired, big differences.
