Perhaps Rutgers finds a silver lining in this mess. We can expect some de-commits from other programs, pronto.

One of the better arguments I heard yesterday is how coaches who are ethical fail to win against the Pitinos of the world and get fired.

How many good guys lost their jobs over the last few decades because they did not sink to this level?

You can't send a sheep to catch a wolf. It takes a wolf to catch a wolf

Dick Vitale's first question will be what is the statute of limitations on these transgressions. Somewhere Jerry Tarkanian is smiling as he chews on his towel.

Hard to figure exactly - a "good guy" at a 'good institution' is probably fine - if the AD & the President are alert & grasp the nature of the game

a "good guy" at a sleazy institution - well, moving out is probably a good thing - not sure how somebody would be blind to the clues & end up in a situation like that - but it happens - & it is an awful spot when your employer gives a nod and a wink and says 'do what ever it takes - whatever! - just don't tell me ...'

I'm not sure at what level the kids are punished but there should be some looking for places to land. Pikiell is building a clean program with a great education for a Big 10 school. We might be a very attractive option for a 4-5 star recruit not wanting to go to another factory.

I like your thinking but will respectfully disagree with you. In BB most 5 star recruits are one and done and they are not there for the education. They want the exposure a factory program can give them.

Another reason why Julie should never have been hired?

only if you had a time machine & could see the future
- because in the context of 5 years ago, being a protege of Tom Jurich (even if one who did not handle all of the premium tasks) was going to be a huge resume boost - - back then Tom Jurich was the hot - keynote speaker kind of guy - the architect of contemporary ways to build a program and procure needed facilities - he was the "it guy" in athletic administration - - being affiliated with Tom Jurich was about the only 'above average' attribute in her portfolio.

this doesn't help Rutgers recruiting wise and is something that hurts college basketball.
But after the hurting is over, might make college basketball more competitive (recruiting wise) for non traditional powers
Right now those decommiting from programs caught up in this mess will just look for another top program to go to and Rutgers isn't considered one (yet).

Agree to disagree. i suspect this nonsense began long ago. Where was the vetting?

OK - but in the real world ... 5 years ago even a highly rigorous pre-employment vetting would not have touched this mess
(1.) Jurich walked on water and his aura was so bright that stuff like this would not have been seen even if it was standing next to him
(2.) nobody would have turned this up in the vetting of an a senior assistant AD who was responsible for non-football and non-basketball sports and facilities & concessions and what-not
- while the vetting of Julie was inadequate - and in several aspects highly inadequate - if this stuff was not coming out in the periodic spotlight scrutinization of Petino and was not uncovered in the various profiles of Jurich - there certainly would have been no revelation of a smoking gun on this issue related to a pre-employment vetting of Julie H - of all of the things that should have / could have given pause ( the accusations of verbal abuse of the vollyball players while @UT should have been uncovered & should have brought all to a screeching halt) - - this was an area that was not going to really come up

Realistically, even highly rigorous pre-employment vetting is mostly verification, confirmation, cross referencing details and maybe some candid expanded discussion with the references - and it stays confined to aspects related to the individual candidate - all of which pales in comparison to a lengthy criminal investigation by the FBI -

On the other hand the Pitino stuff started well beyond five years go. Makes one wonder no?

I'm still not going to get carried away and think this will change a thing and those like RP will be charges with anything. The lesser players will try to make deals, but those like RP will have insulated themselves good enough not to have useful evidence be used against them.
RP & TJ will be terminated, but receive hefty buyouts.
Other programs will kick out some involved in this mess, but the top guys will be compensated very well if forced to depart.

Also the kill the messenger approach has started, one article I read call the informant a con man when describing him.
Wire taps and all, they're going to have to prove their informant was completely honest and didn't push anyone to go against the big dog's wishes and keep the HCs & ADs from knowing what they were doing.
Not saying that wasn't happening, just saying proving that might be tough.

Pitino has now been identified as Coach #2, directly involved in the payment of 100K to Bowen's family. No plausible deniability--my assistant did it without my knowledge--as there was in the plying of recruits with sex. Could it be that Little Ricky goes to jail?

I wonder whether anyone will question how all this was going on under the NCAA's nose?

This is just the tip of the iceberg, Pitino was found dirty more than once. What do they do down at NCAA headquarters? I mean besides taking months to look at somebody's transcripts.

Yes, the House's Energy and Commerce Committee is interested in how this happened and is questioning the NCAA's ability to oversee its institutions.

Now one can argue whether Congress should be involved or not, or the effectiveness, or lack thereof, of the Politicians. That's not the point of my post, simply to state Congress is questioning the NCAA (or has requested such).

IMO, I would not want to be in front of the NCAA's Infractions Committee at this time, such as the UNC ruling. The NCAA will need to show their bite after this mess.

Sure, there are specific things the NCAA isn't allowed to do, but there are MANY investigative initiatives they can implement -- if they wanted to. Instead, the prefer to turn a blind eye, drag their feet, or slap wrists.

How much $$$ does the NCAA pull in? After it gives money to schools, where do all the other millions go? Besides high priced administrators. Has anyone ever accused the NCAA as being an effective organization in policing college sports? Agains besides taking months to review a transcript (unless you're Duke).

And thanks for the post/link RURM85

With coaches and assistants getting canned, there should be plenty of roster turnover and recruits who re-think their commitment. Assumed there would be trickle down of talent to programs that steered clear of this mess. Assuming of course, that every talented player is not involved with these gonifs.

ND having their best rated class in 20 years------with a commit yesterday FWIW we'll likely be Top 5.

But I don't think it's related.

I think many of the decommits just got word that the pay window is closed.
