Phil Sellers: Legend of the Game

Michigan game still haunts me. And think about it all three Jersey teams lost in Final Four to Michigan.

Sellers was a sensational player. With his offense, defense and mental toughness, it would be hard to overstate his importance to those Rutgers teams.

I remember that at crunch time, Phil would get that look on his face, like, just give me the ball.

Sellers took over the game against St.Johns at MSG and single handily won the game for Rutgers.

Basketball team undefeated in the regular season and advancing to the final 4! I was at that game when Sellers took over against St. John's! Need another Phil Sellers. Maybe a Dabney. Perhaps a Hollis, Abdel!!

I like the currrent staff!! I think we are moving in the right direction! Who will be the modern day Sellers for us!!!

I had season tix then. Sellers was the real thing. But he was not alone. That was a great team with a bunch of very talented people players.

Remember waiting on line to see games. Don't leave out Jammin James.

Phil was a great college player. Unfortunately, Michigan was not his best game. But he lifted the program with his attitude and he played tough D and played great in the sandbox with his teammates, who were also exceptional. Dabney, Jordan, Copeland, Bailey, and the rest.I shouldn't forget Mike Palko who started at Center the first 5 games, IIRC.

The 1975-76 season was just amazing. RU averaged I think over 92 ppg. Phil was a joy to watch. Phil, Eddie Jordan, Hollis Copeland and James Bailey all played in the NBA and Mike Dabney I think was a very last cut. I attended 13 games that season and wish I could see those games again. I still would love to see the game vs. the Johnnies at MSG in the ECAC Final when Phil battled Beaver Smith for the last 4 minutes and brought us home.

I was there. Great match-up with Beaver Smith.
Sellers brought so much joy to so many Rutgers fans.
I also remember him fouling out three different guys trying to guard him in one game vs. U.S.C.
Probably my favorite college player of all-time.

the amazing thing was that there was no shot
clock, so a team could pass it around as long as they liked, and, no three point shot..... to average 92 is just crazy
