I had to miss today's game for a family wedding in South Jersey. As we were on our way back up the turnpike, we saw 4 buses with two cop cars in front, two in back, with lights flashing. I assume these were the Maryland team buses. My question is, why the hell do they do this? And more importantly, who is paying for it? Four state troopers at overtime rates for a couple hours each game seems a little ridiculous to me.

I saw the exact same thing returning from the Army game. Two NJ State troopers escorting RU buses and vans back to NJ. Lights and sirens on making cars move over in traffic. All I thought was how much that cost the athletic program.

I can't tell you why they have them when leaving the game, but going to the game coaches prefer to avoid traffic and to not have the team sitting on the bus for a long period of time. Muscles tighten up

I'd be shocked if every P5 school doesn't get this. I'm sure RU does when traveling.

This is big time sports with tons of money involved. These kids are pro athletes without getting paid. Schedules must be met.

. Well this is a lie because I've been behind the buses quite a few times heading south. Every school does this. Escorts to the airport or escorts to the state line where the next set of troopers take over.

If you watched the end of the Baylor-TCU game, after the game TCU fans stormed the field. State troopers had to keep the fans off of the Baylor coach. There are a lot of nutty fans out there. I know its not a bus, but people question why the coaches get escorted too.

And we were late to the"game" on this. We didn't have police escorts in NJ in the 80s when I played, but did have police escorts in Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee and other top schools. So it's been happening for a least 4 decades in college football.

Um no, it is not a lie. PSU last year, troopers did not let anyone pass the busses in the left lane heading north, even thought buses were in the left lane cruising 65mph. There are other board members who can confirm the same. So maybe it does not happen all the time but it DOES happen.

Same in games when coaches go to congratulate the winner after game, usually they have police presence around them on the field. Do you think that so the loser don't assault the winner ?

Police escort for team buses is done in every state for every major college football program.

Troopers as security for coaches is also done at every major university.

When I was in grad school @ Michigan I was in the marching band, and we played away at OSU. Our buses were escorted out of Columbus, onto the interstate. They also had 8 troopers march into the stadium with us (4 on each side), and 2 with us for the entire game. We sat in folding chairs on the sideline by the end zone, the troopers in front of us facing the crowd the whole game.

I would think that a high profile outfit would be susceptible to those who wish to do harm. I don't mind.

Further, I wouldn't even have noticed them if not for the flashing lights. For a state with so many tax issues, maybe we need to think about these purely-for-show expenditures.

Under Schiano the Trooper Detail that traveled with him was a volunteer position paid entirely by Greg. The SP does not pay for the troopers to travel. It's either KF or the athletic department.
