Politi's take (not behind a paywall)

Then don’t quit on the first half and play not to lose. Can’t have it both ways.
Schiano explained in his presser his reasoning and I’ll buy it. He has shown several times this season a willingness to gamble when most times he may have not. Actually at the time it made sense but he’s the HC… the call good or bad is his decision.

I googled and found articles back to 2012 about Schiano having his team crash a victory formation. He did this at least twice. I don't know if he did it here during Schiano 1.0, but he certainly did it as a pro coach. One opposing player characterized it as a cheap shot, and warned that Schiano's players face retribution as a result. To paraphrase the article, the rules aren't made by Roger Goodell but rather by Hammurabi-- an eye for an eye.

Stop already that’s players repeating the whining from their coaches. Retribution? How about the cheap shot artist at Maryland (BTW still there ) on our player ( Finau is the name) We had some people here complain but some are willing to bash Schiano and what our kids did was less harmful… LESS. Did you have selective memories?

Its probably because Schiano told him not to run
It was the same way with Teel
People were critical of Teel not running and when asked why he didn't run Teel said "coach told me not to"
I believe the kid has been told " make your reads, if nothing there scramble for a couple and run out of bounds or slide."
Not his job right now to take hits for the cause. His job is to get better @ the mental aspects of the game. Kid has all the athleticism in the world. Doesn't need to prove himself to people on a internet forum. His(and RUs) best times are ahead God willing.

And that’s ok …if Greg is telling him not to run it is for a reason…You have NO other viable QB’s …Simon…nope…Vedral…nope….that’s why.
Sorry. That's bs. Greg never lets his QBs run. Maybe the only hc in football who does this. That and make his QB hold the ball under his chin if he does run and completely retard his natural running ability.

Actually, in that situation Greg should not complain, if Greg tried to get to the qb the response is fair

I still support trying to win if you are within one score, and nothing will change my opinion
It is just one more play in a game
I support trying to win at all times. But the game is effectively over when the other team can just snap the ball and down it and run out the clock that way. Which is why 99.999% of coaches don't do what GS does.

If he wants to win games, then coach better for the entire rest of the game.

People forget things like the Graber -JoePa incident back at Giants stadium. You want to talk bush league….now that was bush league. Teams know he will do that and he would expect them to do the same. You play until the final whistle especially when you still have a chance.
I've never forgotten the Paterno-Graber incident. That was truly a disgrace.

Thanks for the reply
I can see your point of view
It really is not a big deal overall imo
Either way
Greg knows he runs the risk of angering other head coaches and if he is willing to accept that, it is his choice
Edit:
As fans we should be MORE upset with the timid ending of the first half

Nunzio should have tried to assert himself right then and want to be aggressive and go for it. Confront Greg, a bit, if necessary

And which of Schiano's prior QBs had more than average mobility? Jabu, but the rest of his game didn't measure up. And Wimsatt is working on a gimpy ankle.

I'm not upset by any of it, really. The V formation crashing or the the rotten coaching at the end of the first half. I take all that stuff in stride and, beyond a little momentary minor irritation, it doesn't bother me.

I just intellectually hope that GS self-corrects some here.

Didn’t Vedral frequently run?

It's not about being a running QB. It's letting them scramble for yards when the pass isn't there or the opportunity is.
There are QBs all over college football that don't have superior legs but still do it.
Average mobility is as lol or more than needed.
You tell me which ones couldn't move?
You can't cause you never got to see it happen.

Yes many of us do but youngsters and some oldsters tend forget those things. There are other cheap d shots we took then and upon entry into the B1G.

You may be correct but Schiano explained his reasoning and sorry but it sounded logical. He expressed what usually occurs when and why decisions are made. The guy has been in coaching for many years . Most of his actual peers speak highly of him as well as his players and former players. For gosh sakes they are now lambasting Saban at ‘Bama .WTF is wrong with those folks?

If the cause is to win games, then that is very much a part of the job.

Trying to mitigate injuries is part of coaching, but maximizing your teams ability is as well. We see this with the Giants and their usage of Jones. Sounds like that is at play with Chicago and Fields as well.

If you have a running QB and you are not letting him run, then you are handcuffing your offense.

Not exactly. Did Jabu ever throw a pass his entire time at Rutgers? That guy ran a QB draw on 30% of the 3rd and Longs we had while he was on the team.

If you are running an offense that needs a running QB to function effectively, and you aren't letting him run, that's poor coaching.

Regarding the diving at the knees at the end of the game, if Greg really cared about playing until the final whistle he wouldn't have been so upset at Ohio state's fake punt.

I have no issue with rushing the victory formation if it is a one score game. It's not like Greg is blitzing the formation down 50-0. There is no rule saying the defense has to agree the game is over when the offense is trying to concede.

He wasn't upset at the fake punt. He was upset, and rightfully so, that that douchebag Day decided to wag his finger and flap his lips at a Rutgers player making the play on the OSU sideline.

man, some of you would defend greg if you walked in and saw greg banging your wife
And, at the same time, attack almost any other coach if he threatens their devotion to Schiano, and claim he could never succeed at Rutgers, except Nick Saban or Urban Meyer (Dabo Swinney is assumed to also be unable to succeed at Rutgers).

they have battered wife syndrome
some people should really step back and decide, loyal to RU or to Greg. Remember when Greg said if you don't support me you're not a RU fan? I stopped giving that day, people are just odd with their devotion. He's paid a king's ransom to coach a child's game and does a $hitty job at that. 2 games this year should have been wins and maybe 3 with good coaching. This team's issues are with coaching, not talent

It's just so bizarre because first time around he ultimately never won much. He had his breakout year and never matched it let alone exceeded it. And in his breakout year he didn't even win the conference. It's one thing to be stuck on a guy who won championships but all we got is one great win which is the only game that ever gets brought up.

I remember a play many years ago when Doug Flutie’s Hail Mary pass was caught with 0 on the clock. Strange shit can happen in a game.
And usually does. However ,until others do it regularly,an accepted practice,it's still out in the boondocks.

Agree that we should have beaten Nebraska. But we lost to Iowa 27-10.

How should we have probably won that game unless you take 3 Iowa scores off the scoreboard?
We gifted them two scores on headscratching turnovers, and had a goal-to-go huge gain of our own wiped out by the worst OPI call in the history of football, and another wiped out by a phantom holding call.

Wrong The only thing that will result in is one day one of your kids geting hurt.
In the history of football has that ever worked? Maybe it has but I'm not aware of it.
I'm a GS fan but I hate that play.

+1. Greg is all about player safety and even advocated to get rid of kickoffs. The game is over when you hit the V.

Crashing the victory formation looks stupid . You had the chance to fight for 46 mins. Do it then. Not when the team is kneeling.

It just worked in the Bills vs Vikings game. That said, I don't advocate it; it's poor sportsmanship in my opinion.
What happened in the Bills v. Vikings game was completely different. The Bills needed at least to get back to the line of scrimmage. It wasn't a situation in which a team could take a two-yard loss, which is what happens in the victory formation. But thank you: your post led me to see the highlights of that game.

Schiano will always have his teams play until the final whistle. Actually it is teaching a life skill sorely lacking in our current group of under 40’s population.

This.

This thought flashes through my mind every time I read a post about people complaining that GW won’t run, even when he can easily pick up a first down.
