How about just hire the BEST coach.Perceptions may have changed since the last poll.
You could search for years and never come up with someone better than Schiano. Who else can come into an interview and say "I know I can turn around this team and make them relevant. I've done it before." Even if you got someone who did a great job turning a team around, they haven't done it at Rutgers.
Anyone can say "I know I can turn this team around and make them relevant", and it could all be bluster (even coming from Schiano).
Only Schiano can say "I've done it before", but it was under dramatically different circumstances. It's like someone saying they can win a Gubernatorial election because two decades ago they won a Mayoral election in that same state - yes, that experience is valuable, but it's not an apples to apples comparison. The competition level in the 2020 Big Ten East is massively different than it was in the 2001-05 Big East.
Really don't have to look much farther than McNulty.... some were hailing him as the architect of our offensive success in 2006/07 and thought he'd be the difference maker in 2018. Different circumstances, different outcomes.
That's not to say Schiano would fail here if rehired, but there's no guarantee he'd succeed either. He's got a much longer list of both pros and cons than other candidates I've seen, just because of our familiarity with his career path.
Agree. I'll say it's announced on November 2nd. :TwoHands:I predict the search is over and the Schiano announcement will come soon
Schiano is the BEST coach. Can't spell Best without Schiano. How about just hire the BEST coach.
At one time, The Big East Conference was as good as any other conference. Up until 2004, Miami and Virginia Tech were in it and very good at the time. And Rutgers doesn't just play teams in the Big Ten East, they play teams in the west as well. You could say Schiano was already successful in the Big Ten. Our first year in the Big Ten, we went 8-5, beat Michigan, went to a bowl and dominated UNC. That was because of Sciano's players he recruited and developed. Rutgers never would have done that if Schiano wasn't there the years prior. Imagine if he was on the field.
Let's face it, Rutgers is in a unique position. It isn't just like any other program. It takes someone special to come here and make progress. Schiano had that magic formula.
Hobs and the Search firm he hired just came out with this statement about looking for Ash's replacementI predict the search is over and the Schiano announcement will come soon
Schiano all day everyday
I predict the search is over and the Schiano announcement will come soon
Cult-"like"????Sounds cult like.
Cult-"like"????
I would bet that, being told to "drink this Kool-Aid and it will bring you closer to Schiano", about 90% of the followers on this board would give it a shot.
So, looks like about 45% are in the "Schiano or Bust" category, and 55% want to at least explore other options.
So much for the claim that these people are on the fringe. 48% are either "Hire Schiano now" or "Conduct a thorough search. But hiring Schiano is the only choice I will be content with"
I had to google to find out who he is. So that's one problem for me right there. Cause a lot of other people would also. So not exactly a name that moves the needle. Another is I'm not sure he's ready for this level. Needs to be better than 3-4 in his 1st step up before I'm ready to say he is.I’m telling ya’ll schiano would be a horrible move for multiple reasons. For one the guy has done nothing in the last decade to warrant a HC opportunity, (please do not say he was osu’s DC, so was Ash). But more than that he represents many of our fans ‘last hope’ meaning they believe he is the only person in the planet that can do the job.... meanwhile what if he comes here and fails like he is likely to do, then what? Then all the hope goes away, if the one guy that people think can do the job fails than what does that mean for the future of Rutgers football? Just shut it down?
min not interested in a guy who hasn’t been a HC in almost a decade and the last time he was one he was the biggest laughingstock in the league (he was a total embarrassment in Tampa, no other way to put it).
meanwhile about 200 miles to the south there’s a HC with a proven track record of taking underperforming programs, changing the culture and turning them into champions, this coach would also take the Rutgers job (which I believe is a harder sell than most believe), I think it would be extremely difficult to get a ‘name’ coach besides schiano (again there’s a reason he’s still available).
our hire should be Mike Houston whose currently at ECU. He’s passionate, energetic and exactly what we need.
The search never started if it is already over unless every coach currently working refused to talk to Ventura Partners regarding the opening at RU.
Hiring Schiano without conducting a legitimate search would be so Rutgers. I will thank the Athletic Department for freeing up my Saturdays because I will be as committed going forward as they are.
FWIW: I was one of the 17.6% at the time of my voting who selected, "Conduct a thorough search. I prefer someone other than Schiano, but would be content with Schiano." I still believe he is a Plan B type candidate because I believe he will run a clean program, will do well recruiting, while being a mediocre coach who will consistently win 5--7 games per year after year 4.
Oh its pretty easy to come up with someone better than Schiano. But it would cost much more than Rutgers would ever be willing to pay.You could search for years and never come up with someone better than Schiano. Who else can come into an interview and say "I know I can turn around this team and make them relevant. I've done it before." Even if you got someone who did a great job turning a team around, they haven't done it at Rutgers.
Could be, but I don’t think it’s moving that fast. I’d still like to see what the HC competition is...I predict the search is over and the Schiano announcement will come soon
He had a job with the Pats. Left it. Maybe, just maybe he gave it up to finish what he started here. Almost twenty years ago. Another month or so, and we'll find out. We could do a lot worse. So, what I keep seeing is that it can only be Schiano, because the school wont pay enough to get someone better, and anyone better would never come anyway.
So what does that tell you about Schiano? They guy who you all think will come cheap and take a job no one else wants? Kind of seems like maybe he isn't all that great. If he was, he would have a job. For me, I think the school is fixing to overpay for Schiano in a big way. He was never shy about squeezing more money out of Rutgers. And we will have our awesome fan base to thank for that...they are putting the AD in an impossible position.
That proportion seems to be holding. But about 6% of the Schiano or Bust group want to conduct a thorough search. (I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they want a thorough search to validate Schiano as the right choice, vs pretending to do a search and anointing Schiano.)So, looks like about 45% are in the "Schiano or Bust" category, and 55% want to at least explore other options.
He had a job with the Pats. Left it. Maybe, just maybe he gave it up to finish what he started here.
Old Cabbage said “he didn’t have a job” I said he did have a job. He left there hopefully to come here.I also said “time will tell”.I keep hearing this but not 1 of you can provide a direct quote from Greg that said I quit the Pats to be HC at R.
It fits the narrative so let’s keep saying it.
