POLL: Who’s starting when Caleb returns?

Who starts when Caleb returns?

I voted who I would start based on the games which is all I can see.

The coaches know about 100x more than I do from practice and knowing the players and all the time they spend around them.
If they don't do what I would do, it's not because I'm smarter than them, it's because they know a lot more than I do and they're much better coaches than I am.

Polls like this are fun, but I trust Pikiell to make the best decision.

Hyatt gives you offense, Mag gives you nothing.

Hyatt
Mag has had an extremely disappointing start of the year (based on my expectations). Thru a grand total of 4 games he has taken a step backward (not enough of a sample for me).

If you look at last year Mag was a big factor in the Purdue win and had a hand in way more positive outcomes than Hyatt.

Our season will NOT be determined by how much we beat the weak OOC games, but how we do in the 24 real games.

We have played 1 real game and to Pike, with a full roster, Mag would be the better piece. The 1st half run that Temple went on had a lot to do with Hyatt not getting out on shooters. With everyone healthy that is a minutes killer.

With Paul and Caleb out Hyatt was needed because of his offense.

With all this being said Mag needs to step up or he won’t get minutes. He has to be better with the ball and he has to do a better job on the defensive glass.

Woolfolk Reiber and Simpson may be guys that ultimately take minutes if Mag and Hyatt aren’t up for the task.

I think mag has his moments but after watching him now for 2+ years it is evident what he can and can't do.

What he can't do is play off ball defense, he helps more than anyone I have ever seen and is left out of position more often than not.

What he can't do is make a quick decision, if he has to make a split second decision it is usually the wrong one.

What he can do is cut and finish strong around the basket.

The first two are I think due to his lack of basketball IQ. He has a good frame and some decent skills (strong, athletic, solid FT shooter) but until the light goes on for him (if it ever does) it'll be a frustrating watch

Some one is stuck in 1980s basketball
No, I'm stuck in always-been-the-case basketball. You should try it. In always-been-the-case basketball, guys who can't shoot shouldn't. Mag can't shoot. Hyatt can't shoot. For what it's worth, that problem would be the same in the 1980s.

Hyatt is 6/15, .375 from 3 this season and making 50% of his 2's.
Small sample size sure, but if you don't want him shooting, I don't understand who you do want shooting.
Spencer and Cliff can't take all the shots.
I'm sure that you could find a 3-game stretch over the previous three years of Hyatt's career in which he also shot 38% or higher from 3-point range. And his overall percentage would still be about 27%.

The main 3-point shooters should be Spencer and Mulchay. Reiber when he's in there. Let Palmquist keep trying to get comfortable when he's in there. Simpson gets more time to show whether he can make them. Maybe Caleb if he gets back to his freshman shooting form. After that, it's a crap shoot. Not Hyatt. Not Mag. I don't like Cliff shooting them, not only because he misses too many, but also because it's gotten him out of the paint too often (1st half against Temple). He should be down low, jamming the ball, working on his improving post moves, and working on his improving 10-footer.

The staff tracks everything in practice. I'll give you one guess who the team's leading scorer in all of the offseason practices was.

This is something most people don't think about, we see maybe two games a week, about 3-4 hours of basketball. An hour and change of playing time for the guys who play the most, a lot less for many players.
The coaches see 10 times that in practices each week and know even more about the players from all the time they spend with them.

That would be Hyatt because in order after he catches the ball:
A) shoot
B) shoot
C) shoot
D) shoot
And until he stops averaging 14 ppg he should continue taking those 9 shots per game in his 30 minutes per game.

As a point of reference, the starter he replaced was taking 12 shots per game in 32 minutes....averaging 15.8 points per game.

I understand that he's working on a method to shoot the ball twice immediately after he catches it.
So, after four games...9 shots per game in 30 minutes per game is a lot and shooting every time he touches it?

This is getting annoying. Second time this year in the major sports there was “minor” injury to a good player, and it has turned out to be a lot more than minor. First Sam Brown, now Caleb.
