I can agree but does that make RU a better basketball team?? There's no true starting role that is in place on the roster.

He's not the best PG on the roster.....

He's not the best Combo guard or shooting guard (quick shooting, off the dribble, defender of an opponents guards, volume 3 point shooter from the arc.....his threes are best suited from the corners.

Is he the best SF or 3rd guard (perhaps but not in place of developing Gavin Griffiths IMO)....

Is he a true PF that should play ahead of Hyatt or Mag and be asked to battle more physical players at that position?? RU still needs another 4/5 and that player factors in as well.

From a perspective of what it takes to improve as a team, there isn't a true role where Mulcahy's strengths are in place, unless he's going to completely change how fast he plays, how he pushes the ball in transition etc.....and if he's not the true PG, where he has been and not done it consistently, it becomes more difficult finding the fit for big minutes (30+).
Are all these words to say Simpson starts over Paul? WIth Fernandes? I disagree.
Barring a Cam-level transfer shooting guard. Paul will start.
If Pike thought Simpson could start, they wouldn't have brought in Fernandes.

Paul had 4 years to play PG...there's a reason why Fernandes was brought in....and Davis and Griffiths....to upgrade with Simpson how we play at guard....Spencer and Mulcahy are phased out.

Hard to say at this point. Clearly they got Fernandez to be the starting point guard. If he is the productive healthy Mulcahy, I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts. Of course I suspect Mag will not be able to start the season. To leave Simpson out of the starting lineup though would almost be going backwards. Unless he is going to be the instant offense off the bench.

Fernandes was brought in because both Paul and Derek were terrible at getting the ball up the court and setting up the offense. Spencer ended up doing this better than both of them, even though he is certainly not a point guard and far from great at it. Expect to see us play at a much faster pace with Fernandes. Paul won’t slow us down because he will not have the ball in his hands until we are in the front court.

Unless Simpson’s shooting does a 180 he will not be playing the 2 much alongside Noah. Paul and Noah will bring the ball up together with Noah pushing pace.

The thing about Simpsons shooting is he has very good form. I expect his shooting will improve each year assuming he is taking 1000 shots every day!

Paul is a lousy ball handler and should stay away from bringing up the ball. His high dribble forced him to come up the court very slowly, if he tries to go fast it is easy to pick his pocket. Would love to see him post up more and pass or shoot from that position.

Repeating from other posts:
Simpson shot 16.7% from 3 in the Big Ten, 43.5% from 2 for 37.9% overall in Big 10 games.
He shot 2-5 from 3 in the first game vs Indiana, then 2-5 vs Michigan in the Big Ten tournament
The 24 games in between those two he shot 9% from 3 on 1.4 attempts per game

Fernandes was brought in to maximize Cam, not phase him out. Mulcahy, I agree.

I’m aware of his shooting percentage this past season. If you reread what I wrote my point was I believe he has the potential to become a better shooter with practice (Unlike say Caleb McConnell who had a very unorthodox approach shall we say). Not sure what your point is.

My point is that he was a very bad shooter last season. It's a relatively small, but extreme sample size.
I HOPE he improves to > 30% this season, but it's unlikely to improve that much.

Simpson's shooting percentage in 2022 could not be less relevant to this season imo. First year to second year is a massive jump, especially in the expanded role he'll get this year.

Shooting improves with practice and comfort level, he has shown he can play at this level.

Take a look back at our recent first year to second year jumps.
Geo - 38% to 35%, from 3 36% to 34%
Ron - 41% to 45%, from 3 28% to 35%
Caleb - 41% to 41%, from 3 35% to 28%
Montez - 38% to 38%, from 3 24% to 30%
Jacob Young at Texas, 41% and 32%, next year at RU 41% and 27%. Finished 42% and 26% at Oregon. Most simpson like.
Paul - 54% to 48%, from 3 33% to 39%
Mag - playing time was limited his first two, but 1st year #'s were much better.

There is not guarantee shooting improves. We've been hit or miss.

I don’t agree with you on Paul being a poor ball handler. For a forward he’d be a GREAT ball handler.

But In all universes imaginable, he’s a much better ball handler than Hyatt. It’s not debatable.

That is a very low bar, Hyatt can’t handle to save his life . . .

Right - that’s was the context of my post. I was saying that I don’t see any scenerio where Paul would be benched in favor of Hyatt because he’s better at everything. Ball handling included. Paul isn’t slated to lose playing time if he decides to leave.
