Preview of RU/Ilinois Dual Meet

Still struggling on our feet and bottom. Not enough good take downs. THese next two months hopefully we will see a vast increase in attacking on our feet.

Soon to be joining Mario Battali on the Food Network

Sounds like Camp, AA and AP all had really really bad nights. Was hoping to see a different style this year with Donnie P in the room but the same standing/bottom issues seem to be rearing their head. On the flip side Delvecchio is a scrapper.

This is one of the most difficult duals I've had the pleasure of watching in quite some time.

Thank God for Smith, McCabe and Theo, or else it would be borderline unbearable to watch.

What?
Scott Winston went from being the most explosive HS wrestler I ever saw, to a tentative one at Rutgers.
I'm fully aware he had injuries,

If Delgado wrestled we would've only won two bouts. Long way to go before we even crack the top half of this conference.

I see.

Didn't understand who you were talking about in the first post. Just wanted clarification.

Thnx for the response.

Belushijo-

Besides the obvious answer of competition level, what do you think another reason is we seem tentative against strong teams.

Is it purely them making us look that way? I played a sport at the highest level possible and I know you can be made to look like you've never played before…just curious what your thought are?

Looks like we also get Iowa Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. Sunday for our $9.95. $$$$

For kids like Camp, AA and AP: it wasn't the competition level. They just didn't wrestle well, for whatever reason.

Granted, Martinez is awesome, but AP placed top 8 in the country last year. No way should he get manhandled like that. Worry level is pretty high right now for AP.

Not too worried about AA. He does have to work on getting out. If he doesn't, he won't do much this season. I think he'll be ok, though.

Camp only lost 2-0, but its very concerning to me because it was a spitting image of his last few matches at OSU where his head coach, Tom Ryan, basically called him out for quitting at the NCAA tournament. He says all the right things in interviews about second chances and wanting to be a national champion, but his effort/energy/execution level hasn't reflected such.

IMO, the following guys were just against kids who are on another level:
Gravina v Morse - Gravina needs to put about 25 lbs of solid muscle on that frame of his.
Bakuckus v Brunson - top 12 guy
Pafumi v Reyes - Reyes was one of the top recruits in the country coming out of high school.

Smith not taking a decent shot in eight minutes of wrestling was unbearable to watch. I'm concerned about him more than anyone. $$$$

I wonder how hard this team works in comparison to Iowa,Minn, Penn St, and other Big10 teams. The RU schedule was Cream Puff City in December. Camp backs out of getting some work in at Wilkes. Is Goodale trying appease his big recruits or work their butts off? He said in the Skull session the big difference against Iowa was ' TOUGHNESS', and you can see in the last 2 matches he wasn't kidding.. But what can he do about it???

Talent is at RU Wrestling, but are these guys Tough?

7 NJ State Championships between Ash & Camp, and 2 losses to lower ranked kids. Time to look in the mirror.

Congrats to Billy Smith, Sean McCabe and Ken Theobold. !

Considering Smith beat Black in high school, twice IIR, it would have been nice to see him widen the gap. Black hasn't really had the type of career people thought he would have since graduating high school. He was the #1 hvy in the country at one point.

Wasn't terribly exciting, I agree. Just glad he won the match.

High expectations. poor performance. That's Rutgers wrestling in a nutshell. It's either choking or coaching. Take your pick.

You wonder if Orr will get another shot at 165 in place of Gravina. I know Gravina shows a lot of promise only being a freshman but perhaps Orr is more mature and ready to handle this competition right now?

Lets not forget Perotti had 15 losses last year in the EIWA. He will most likely take another beating Sunday. He can bounce back. Camp is another story. Looking at the sch where are his wins going to come from? Navy Drexel??? I hope he changes things up some how. Ash is frusttrating. He is so tough on his feet and he doesnt take advantage of it. He has always had a problem on bottom. Thats still there. Very tough loss to take. Camp and ash win and its 15-14 us going into the last match. Sunday might be rough to watch for every single weight class. Hope we can win 1

Perotti seems to have been a flash in the pan.
he should always get credit for putting RU on the map. Glad he had one good tournament.

I think the tone was set from the first match. Camp looked terrible and it looked like he had no interest in being out there. He didn't take any shots from his feet and appeared to just give up from bottom. If this is the effort that he plans on bringing to the mat things are only going to get worse for him. Smith has turned into a typical heavyweight wrestler. When he first came to college he stood out because he was a heavyweight that wrestled like a lightweight with a lot of offensive moves. It looks like the big guys need a new approach to their matches. On the bright side, AA is learning you have to bring 100% to every match at this level. McCabe, Delv, and Theo all wrestled nice matches. Last night was one we let slip away, I think we could have won this one if we wrestled well.

Great post on all accounts especially regarding Smith. Striking difference between then and know in energy/style. Preseason predictions for this team centered on having a better lineup than ever but less wins due to schedule challenges. I`m starting to doubt the overall talent in the lineup though and the next few matches may bring that to the forefront I`m afraid. Still excited about where the program is headed though.

not surprised with camp. guy had no heart at osu, and that's not changing with his 2nd chance here at rutgers. we all know these talented kids with no heart growing up - they usually don't do well in life. he's one of many kids like that, and will live life regretting what he blew. can he change it and become that stud? sure! how likely is it? not likely.

smith... what's up with him? wrestles scared.

i'll be there tomorrow to watch the match. hopefully camp and smith bring more energy.

Wow, you all are serious fair weather fans. RU93, that's a pretty harsh assessment of Camp's overall character. Take it easy and be a supportive fan for a little bit before crucifying the guy. Wrestling is tough, making weight consistently is tough. According to the coaching staff, the team's attitude and effort level is good, so, if you believe in the staff, have faith in the kids as well.

fox - you know what happened with camp at osu both on the mat and off of it, right? i wrestled too, so you don't need to tell me how hard it is. i see no heart, and i'm not going to sugarcoated. let's see how he does tomorrow.

Yes last night was a disappointment for the kids, coaches and us. Most of the kids did not wrestle up to their potential but sometimes your opponent has something to do with that. Let's judge Campy when he has a few more matches under his belt. Sometimes race horses run a bad second race after their first start. Smitty has the ability to beat any 285 pounder in the country if he did not worry about scoring points and just went out and wrestled. Hopefully we at least show up tomorrow and give our best while throwing caution to the wind. Minny just squeaked out a 20-19 win last night over Michigan.

The Voice of Reason ! Good post wngarbarini , as usual . Most of us last night , as the match was going on, and right after , were critical of lack of intensity, lack of shooting (take down attempts), lack of offense. Maybe being on the road for the very first Big Ten match factored in RU being tentative. I also think the comparatively easy Dual Match Schedule didn't help a whole lot (yes, I'm aware of the Cliff Keen tourny in Vegas).

The good news is the team has more opportunities to show some Offense, Toughness and competitiveness starting tomorrow against Minn, then Penn St and Ohio St in 2 weeks.

The crowds are going to show up, time for the team to show we belong .
