Question 48 Across on Saturday's (6/24) NYT Crossword Puzzle

I get the NYT crossword online and get it the night before it's published. Question: Football rival of Rutgers.
Now we're talking! 4 letters?

Cuse? Nope, too long ago.
Conn? Nope, same thing.
Nits? Nah, they are "unrivaled".
Owls? Maybe, but don't play that often.
Terps? Too many letters.
tOSU? Doubtful.

Army fits, but is Army really a rival?

You got any other letters?

The answer is Army. Struck me as odd, given all the possible clues you could give. We're moving up in the world. The NYT crossword is rarefied air.

If the 'puzzelier' has not come up to speed in the last 40 plus years, it could be YALE
